Update of an old piece. I did wear this more than a few times when it was just the blue tartan, but I was never quite happy with it, and tried 'fixing' it a few times before it got put away. Eventually I decided I could use the large offcut of this black lace to fix it up and balance it out, plus I updated the fastenings, as they were never comfortable and it wasn't adjustable before. Happy with it now, and hoping it will last the next 10(?!) years too. It’s showtime!!!! This outfit was summoned specifically for Beetlejuice the Musical. I’ve been haunting the Ticketek site for over a year and grabbed seats six months ago like a woman possessed. Naturally, the look had to match the drama. I envisioned stripes (because —“The Whole Being Dead Thing”) and something green and over-the-top on the bottom. Then I spotted the fabric of my dreams on @themakersocietyaustralia site… and immediately saw the price tag. RIP to that idea. But plot twist: a remnant landed in the sale section and I pounced. It promptly ghosted me in the mail. Gone for over a month. I mourned. They sent a replacement. Then—boom!—both packages showed up, like Beetlejuice himself: dramatic entrance and perfect timing. Wrapped the fabric around me and conjured up a skirt vision: pencil silhouette, big drapey side moment. Vogue #v8956 materialised in the mail two days before the show. I hope all of you who celebrated Thanksgiving had a wonderful time with family, friends and good food! Here is #vogue8956 that I just finished making and wore to Thanksgiving dinner. This skirt is definitely one that took me out of my comfort zone. I am short waisted and busty with a thick waist so I usually wear my tops over and not tucked in so as to elongate the torso and not bring attention to my waist. But I fell in love with this skirt after I saw @ericabunker two versions (on her blog from several years ago). I loved the buckles she used and so I was inspired to make one with similar buckles I purchased at Pacific Trim in NYC. I simply threw all of my usual rules out the window and I am glad I did. I love this skirt. The fabric has a little bit of a loose weave so I drafted a lining for the skirt and I made a bias binding for the inside of the waistband. The buckles are made of a thin vinyl so I made sure to use sturdy hooks and eyes to do the heavy lifting of holding the skirt to my waist. Finished my first Sewing Bee inspired make for basics week. A wrap skirt for winter. And I did have to follow Esme's advice about send carefully with many checks to match! The sew came together once my adjustments were marked out and cut. The thing that took the longest was the Chand stitching - slip stitching the waist and and the closures and the hem (my choice). And check out the brilliant Brisbane winter weather! Being subtropical out winters tend to be dry with clear blue skies. I made this skirt. It's #V8956 . It's a Scuba Knit & there def are mistakes in the waistband. However...My sewing journey started as a way to cope w the way I was feeling this past summer. Making something I can wear was totally rewarding, & developing a new skill helped get me out of a rut. AND let me say: sewing and drafting clothing pattern are 2 different skills but work hand in hand (& they're difficult). They both require near 100% accuracy and being a perfectionist in my projects I have a hard time dealing w setbacks in my projects. Anyhow...my enjoyment outweighs that and so I'm gonna keep sewing.

Finally! I did the basic shape a while ago, but took my time deciding on and actually doing the finishes. I went with 2 dragons on the border edge, because #moreismore, and reinforced the waistband, since I used deadstock stretch fabric from @minervadotcom. The hem was a killer, and I need to try to get stuff like that done in the early stages, because it's so much harder to add later.
