A Friend of mine just bought a house and in the house were massive curtains. These curtains are huge and must have cost the original owner a lot of money. They are natural fibers the main fiber clearly cotton but probably others too but I’m not sure what. That friend gave these curtains to me and of course I had to make something crazy out of them. They are so large I have enough fabric left over that I could make the largest of crinoline dresses. I finished this suit last week and was waiting for the perfect day to go out and take pictures. I wasn’t going to sew at all this weekend. Then I got this crazy idea. I have this shirt that was my mom’s. I used to love it when I was a kid because it had a lace collar that was pseudo Edwardian. Now that I own the shirt I have not worn it because it is made of the cheapest polyester. You know how some polyesters try to pretend to be different fabrics? Not this one it is polyester and proud of it.Yesterday morning I decided to take the lace collar off of the shirt and make a new one is a true Edwardian style in a nice cotton. I still have the collar which is the part I like and I’ll actually wear the shirt now instead of it collecting dust in my closet. Jacket back details. 🪡 . This soutache trim design came with the pattern I used for the walking suit jacket, but it's based on an actual popular design from the 1890s. I've seen it pop up in several fashion plates from Harper's Bazaar and in extant garments from the time period. This was probably the hardest part of the walking suit to make and it's not my best work, but I still think it looks nice and it was definitely worth the hassle. I told myself after I finished this project that I would never use soutache again, but I may or may not have a new project in the works that will indeed have soutache. There is a discussion going on in the costuming community right now headed by @alatheish about fiber content and hate keeping. I resisted getting into historical costuming for a long time because of this gate keeping. I don’t know if I will ever be able to afford silk. Especially not enough silk to be able to make a full gown out of. When dressed take 8 yards or more you are spending at the least $300 on a costume. I make almost everything out of cotton. If I want to splurge on fabric it is a linen or wool blend because I can’t afford the 100% wools or linens. For that reason I stick to day dresses and do my research that these things can be made out of cotton for fear of being judged. I figured I would never be able to make an evening gown because those are made of silk and out of my reach. It wasn’t until I was given massive poly blend curtain panels that I started my historical costuming journey. It was only because I had so much yardage. I was scared to post the pictures again out of fear of being judged. I’m glad I made this suit because it made me realize how much I love dressing up in historical pieces and started me on the journey I’m on now. It’s been great to see amazing costumers in this community post the polyester makes in their collection because it has made me realize how much I had fallen into those gatekeepers traps. I finished an 1890s walking ensemble based on #m7732 by Angela Clayton. Overall I’m pretty happy with the overall look but there are a few things I’d do differently next time for sure! We went out to a little beach park by the sound (staying away from other people of course!) to take some pictures. I recently finished some Victorian outerwear pieces that comprise a late 1890s walking suit. The design is my take on the @angelacostumery McCall's #m7732 pattern. I used a delicate white cotton for the chemisette and a blue-gray polished cotton for the walking skirt. The skirt also features a black velvet waistband and is trimmed in black velvet ribbon. I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out and I'm looking forward to finishing the jacket so I have the whole ensemble. A couple of works in progress. I was feeling really unmotivated to work on the outfit on the right because I’m having a ton of trouble with the cheap soutache braid I bought. All it does is snag and make this ugly little pulls in the braid. It was really hard to be excited about it until my umbrella handle came in the mail! I bought the little pink umbrella from an antique store without a handle for $8, because I absolutely loved the colors. Initially my idea was to find a pretty drawer knob to replace it with, but I couldn’t find anything I liked. Finally I got the idea to buy a cane topper and that worked out great! Altogether this umbrella only cost $20, and I absolutely love it. Mock up of the #angelaclayton #m7732 1890s walking suit jacket. It goes together pretty easily, which I was surprised about because it looks complex (to me anyways). It was my first time setting a sleeve as well. It’s a two part sleeve so the seams look kind of wonky but I think it’s just how it is. . I have either a red/brown plaid silk/cotton/wool blend or a brown/navy plaid wool. I’m leaning toward the brown navy, only in case I have to wash it. . I’m also trying to figure out if I can just flatline it instead of bag lining. I may just try, I don’t see why not since I’m not planning on doing the elaborate soutache on the back. .
