I believe the fabric I used to make these stays was originally a pillowcase! Having a fabric hoarding mother means I can often find something suitable in her stash if I only need a smaller amount of fabric The pattern for the shift and stays is #S8579. I'd recommend it for a beginner, but I'm not a massive fan of the shape it gives. Some time next year I plan to draft my own using the arc drafting method, to be worn under a 1780s gown. But I need to finish some more urgent sewing projects first!

#fallforcostume Day 16: First I recently finished my first stays, using the @americanduchess Simplicity pattern S8161. It was also my first time using cable ties a boning - genius! Next time I might try stitching them by hand or try a different pattern (maybe one of Redthreaded’s!) but I thought this one was very beginner-friendly and straight forward. I did hand-stitch the trim, but I don’t think I’d whipstitch it all next time. I hope the hedgies make you as happy as they make me. Cut "the gussets from the bosom," says the 1784 manual "Instructions for Cutting Out Apparel for the Poor." What does this mean? Fabric economy played a significant role in the cutting and sewing of garments in the 18th century and beyond. Shifts and shirts, the most basic undergarment worn by all people in some form, was an exercise in geometry to minimize fabric waste. These directions from 1784 instruct you to use the fabric cut out from the neckline for the sleeve gussets. To my great pleasure, the American Duchess shift pattern has a neckline shape that is large enough that I could cut the gussets AND cuffs from "the bosom!" The Chemise, Layers of a #RegencyMorningDress, Part 1/4 This chemise is a modified @simplicity_creative_group @americanduchess pattern #8579. I used the chemise pattern and eliminated the sleeves and bias-bound the neckline. The linen used for this was the @fabricsstorecom linen in IL020 Bleached. I love this chemise. It’s wrinkly, and the sleeves are inaccurate, but I wear this all the time because it’s comfy. Finally I have worked out how to do up my Georgian Panniers for my outfit for @thebridgetownball . And i have to say the petticoat now looks as it should! The pattern is Simplicity 8579 .. i know i know its simple when you know how but for the life of me couldnt figure it out looking at the pictures and the instructions and to add insult to injury I have worn them multiple times on 'the Great' as a Support artist but I never have to put these things on myself as costume does it for me so I just stand there while these lovely costume people do the work...probably wise as time is money on a film set and I be there for 3 days trying to dress myself..don't  even start me on the corsets!!! I have also made the stays  which went well until i had to put the binding around the bottom and all those wiggley bits but as no one is going to see them unless the orginal Mr Darcy shows up, be very afraid Mr Firth!!!  ok a girlcan dream cant she? the main fabric is some fabric left from a dress I made a few years back and i loved it so much i kept the scraps thinking maybe i be able to make a blouse or something but sadly there was no pattern that took so little fabric. whilst looking for another fabric in my stash i came across this and goodness knows how but i managed with jiggery pokery and witchery to squeeze in the pattern pieces to the fabric but hence the bad pattern matching as that wasn't happening.  at this moment I am not going to bother to make the under petticoat thing  as on a filmset they just stick a vest top underneath but who knows i might have a last minute panic and make it, as it is I probably be tweaking my outfit until the last possible minute when my carriage arrives Rest assured dear reader this sewist will not be posting pictures wearing these said items to preserve her dignity and spare the reader's blushes one thing I willl say I am hoping the powder rooms are big enough for a lady with such ample  hippage as I remember wearing these things onset and having to go into the honey wagon  sideways  #georgianfasion #thebridgetownball #simplicity8479 #s8579 #historicalcostume #pannier #stays

Progress on my linen shift continues. I rather like how the felled gore seams converge in a stagger. This is because all three seams are pressed in the same direction. The sleeve gusset seams are felled toward the gusset on the sleeve side and towards the body on the body side. Not having made a historically accurate-ish shift before, I went down a deep internet rabbit hole to figure out what methods I wanted to use. I decided I wanted to hand fell stitch the seam allowances after machine stitching the seam line.
