Finally finished my 18th century stays! These were made with Simplicity 8162. Not shown laced because my dummy isn't capable of compression and this is a functional corset. My goal for the under garments is 18th century but make it goth lol. My chemise is done in black and I finished the bum pad over a week ago with the embroidered skull detail. I intend to cover stitch over the grommets with black embroidery floss for a more period look with modern day sturdiness and I will likely do some decorative embroidery on the bias tape to cover the slightly sloppy hand stitching.I still need to buy some twill for the lacing. Finally got around to photgraphing my handmade #renissancefestival outfit! The bodice pattern is Butterick #b4669 The top is reversible, and both sides were made from #williammorrisfabric I added boning to the corset top for extra structure, and made bias tape and lacing out of the skirt fabric, so that everything matched perfectly. The chemise is Simplicity #S8162 I modified the sleeves to make them longer and poofier, added a ruffle on the botton of the skirt for length and volume, and added lots of lace from my stash. Skirt was self drafted and has an elastic waist and pockets. I love how this outfit turned out, and I could definitely see myself making similar pieces in the future!

These stays have only been 2 years in the making 🫣😂 I fell pregnant after cutting them out and couldn’t see the point in continuing sewing them while I couldn’t even fit into them. So now 8 months postpartum with the looming deadline of Halloween as an excuse to finally finish my 18th century outfit I have completed them and I couldn’t be happier. They were a very big labour of love with many many hours hand sewing. First attempt at stays and a shift completed! The shift was 100% hand sewn, the stays were like 80% machine 👀 The boning was thin and wobbly, the shift armpit gussets were too big, and I think I need to add bust space on the next pair of stays I make. I gave the @americanduchess #S8162 stays another try, this time making my own adjustments for better fit. I didn't size down because the length was right, but I basically turned the back two sections into one by taking out the lacing completely as well as a few inches of space on each side - now it fits me around! I also added in non-adjustable straps, kinda just because I wanted to... And I doubled the amount of boning by adding as many channels as I could fit at half inch increments. It's pretty close to a perfect fit - the only note for next time is that the armholes are a tad small underneath, which shouldn't be hard to open up a little if it becomes a problem. I used a prettier fabric for the outer layer (old curtains) and since I had already bought the pattern and supplies for the other, the cost for this pair of stays was about $10 for the bias binding I didn't already have. Now that I'm done with the shift, stays, bum roll, cap, kercheif, embroidered pocket, and under petticoat, all I have left is the over petticoat and bodice! And here is a 'colour' photo of my outfit, I wore it so I could check how the length of the skirt is when being worn on uneven ground so it will be ok for Fantasy Forest – I know how the skirt is without the ruffle but with the ruffle I needed to check. Also it meant I could get a tin type photo without any queue, like there will be at Fantasy Forest. The dress and over skirt are made of linen, my stays (the bodice over the dress) and the hat are cotton canvas (so is my bag but it's not visible). Not pictured is the linen belted mantle that I made to wear as a top layer if it’s a bit chilly – I didn’t need it for the day. The dress is a combo of Vogue 9100 and Vogue 1732/8882, the over skirt is self drafted. The stays are Simplicity 8162. The sleeves are also a Simplicity pattern 8506. The hat and Lila (the furry familiar) are both from patterns by CholyKnight on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CholyKnight - the patterns are really well written with photos for each stage of the construction, the hat is very simple but the neck creatures are a bit more complex and they need more specialised parts – including doll armature or wire, to enable the creature to be positioned just as you want. Lila is a shapeshifter who tried to be a cat (used the cat pattern and due to the eyes and the fur she looks more like a koala crossed with a cat). The leash is just a rainbow cord knitted into an icord. The goggles were bought on Etsy. All fabric except the fur was from Minerva the fur was from a local shop, they sold off remnants and I bought it thinking it would be useful. #fallforcostume Day 16: First I recently finished my first stays, using the @americanduchess Simplicity pattern S8161. It was also my first time using cable ties a boning - genius! Next time I might try stitching them by hand or try a different pattern (maybe one of Redthreaded’s!) but I thought this one was very beginner-friendly and straight forward. I did hand-stitch the trim, but I don’t think I’d whipstitch it all next time. I hope the hedgies make you as happy as they make me.
