I finished it just in time! This dress was so much fun to sew and, most important, she loves it. The pattern is Vogue #V8766 with a few hacks. She wants to be able to wear it over other dresses and outfits so it is unlined and I used the pattern as a base for making a knit tank top dress for underneath. Sewing Challenge 2025: FEBRUARY (Inspiration) Swipe for the make ⏩️⏩️ This month I got to go back to my favourite kind of garment: glamorous frocks that I’ve got nowhere to go in 😂 My challenge was to make a dress inspired by the famous pink gown worn by Marilyn Monroe, so I decided to make a more wearable version for me. Instead of a floor length gown, I decided to turn it into a midi length cocktail dress. I also chose to add straps to my version - I have not made a strapless dress yet, and while I intend to at some point this year, I wasn’t feeling brave enough just yet 😂 As another nod to the original garment, I made a large bow lined with leftover black bridal satin which I added to a belt so I can wear this dress with or without it. To reference the musical number ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’ that Monroe wore this dress for, I added sew on jewels to the straps - initially I planned to adorn the entirety of the straps with the sparkles, but it took the best part of an hour to sew on what I did, and I was losing patience 😅 For this dress, I used the pattern Vogue V8766 (but added to the length). I loved the style but it wasn’t the best fit (in the waist). It’s been hanging in my closet since forever so I decided to hack it and repurpose the fabric for Barbie clothes 😁 I actually made two other dresses from scraps in the past, but have gifted both. Attended my very first #adelaidefrocktails this weekend and was thrilled to meet many wonderful and talented people and finally have an opportunity to really nerd out over all things sewing 😍 Not to get too emotional over it but it feels like such a joy and special human privilege to share a passion with others! I am delighted to share the lovely dress made for a wonderful mother of the bride! She googled “custom dressmaker”, my name popped up, and she contacted me via my website, asking if I was able to help her create the dress she was looking for. I said “yes!” to the dress and we got started right away. After discussing her inspiration looks on her Pinterest board and closely studying the details, we settled on a classic Vogue pattern #v8766 using navy lace fabric from @moodfabrics and matching navy satin from @millendstorepdx. After several fittings and a few tweaks here and there, her dress turned out beautifully! The flattering neckline and sheer lace bodice with elbow length sleeves fits perfectly into the swishy tea-length circle skirt. It’s fully lined, has built in bra cups and interior hidden hanging straps. So pretty, inside and out! PS she also had me make a little outfit in linen for the bridal brunch following the wedding. I had to match with her just ONE time before she learns to say "No!" 😂 I picked up 4 metres of this beautiful cotton fabric for $15 from a remnants table, I love it so much I knew I had to make sure I used every scrap! My dress (which I have now realised you can't really see properly, I will try to get more pictures 😂) is #v8766 view c, a boned, strapless bodice with boning and princess seams and a full circle skirt. I made up size 12 and the only alteration I made was to take in the top of the bodice an inch at each side seam, then taper it down to the size 12 seam at the waist so I didn't have to alter it too much. It certainly did the trick, however it taught me the importance of making a sample first...which I now do!!!! Olivia's dress is my faithful #s8563 view f which is my go to when I have less than a metre to work with and want something pretty, I made the size 3 so it will fit her this coming spring/summer (please stop growing!!!!) Funny how you can have a pattern for ages that you don’t ever think you’re going to use, but then someone spots its potential et voilà! So, this is #V8766, spotted by my daughter @morebutterthanpotatoes and made in some beautiful Merchant and Mills linen. Many thanks go to @weepingmyrtle who posted a lovely version. Anyway, lots of adjustments. I took the back bodice darts out and adjusted the seams so the bodice fitted. This sounds like an effort, but by making the speediest bodice toile it wasn’t. The straps were shortened and then I fiddled with the skirt to make it fit. This meant taking the hips in and lengthening the straight part and we decided on little pleats in place of gathers on the front. Finally we made the ruffle a bit smaller. have a confession to make. I supported fast fashion. 😱 Back in late March/early April, I saw this dress in the window at @hm. I loved the red, pink, purple, orange floral print but I definitely did not like the dress itself. Fast forward, I found this XXL and knew it was enough fabric for me to turn it into something I liked. Surprisingly, some of the seams were not finished despite it being a store bought garment… I did manage to make a few yards of bias binding which I used on the hem and will be adding to future garment for a pop of color. I reused the zipper, and the only thing I added was white cotton for the lining. Even if I do say so myself, I think my cocktail dress is much cuter than the sundress. Pattern: #v8766 - I changed the bodice to a sweetheart neckline and added a waist band.
