When I rediscovered my sewing machine in 2015 after an unintentional sewing hiatus of 25 years, #v8814 was the first pattern I purchased. The style was more “evening” than every-day and clearly meant for warm weather (which we get for about 60 days a year), but I loved it so much! Yesterday I finally pulled myself together and finished a bunch of things that had been 90% done for ages, so I have things to share! I’m going through a phase of silhouette experiments, so I took the opportunity to try out Vogue 8814, a pattern I’ve owned for years but always been too chicken to actually make because it seemed so contrary to what usually suits my body type. And to my surprise, I like this! It took a while for me to adjust what I was expecting to see in the mirror, but now I’m fully on board with it. I used stretch fabric so didn’t need to put the zip in, and it’s really comfy and easy to dance in. My main alteration if I make this again will be to the bust - the pattern has cup sizes but I could have done with more cup sizes. The D isn’t quite cutting it. Relaxing with the Mr T during the drinks and canapés at our daughter’s belated wedding party 2 years after they actually got married. It’s been a joyous week culminating with these celebrations. Inspired by the bias dresses made during this season of the #gbsb2022 , I made #v8814 from this wonderful viscose satin with just the perfect colours for Ibiza. Luckily the pattern comes in cup sizes and after making a toile I felt brave enough to cut into the real stuff. The fabric is shifty to sew and although it’s not perfect as one side of the V at the front rolls out a bit, my rule is - good enough is fine! After the first round of bubbles no one will notice . . So I quickly ran a mock up of the #vogue #v8814 #pattern #sewingpattern and heres the results. It's not lined and it's not perfectly stitched. this was purely for size and fit. There was a bit of baggage in the bum area near the zip so will have to adjust the patter there and I'll need to make sure the seams meet exactly on the real one but not bad for a quick mock up! Only really sad thing is, that overlocker has decided to not stitch and therefore I wont be able to make up the real thing in satin until it's fixed. My vogue #v8814 dress hacked for work Christmas party. Casino Royale themed. Didn’t have enough fabric left to do cut out the top bodice, so it’s whatever was left from my byhandlondon elisalex dress bodice that I cut out. Fabric is a double bonded crepe from @theremnantwarehouse. Such good drape 🥰😍 #sewingeveningdresses #voguepatterns #memadedress #memadepartydress #sydneysews #sewistsofinstagram

Time to talk about the dress pattern and materials. For the bodice front, I used #v8814 . I went through 6 muslins on the bodice, and honestly the fit still wasn't perfect in the end, but I ran out of time 😝 I drafted the back bodice, just a simple curved V, and the detachable sleeves. The skirt was a combination of #v2810 and #m7928. It took three tries to get the top skirt to fit well, and I added a little extra volume to the flounce. I also continued the curve of the low back into the top back skirt piece, and I think it worked really well. The lace was from @moodfabrics and it was incredible to work with. Their Leonardo soft tulle was also the BEST -- I recommend nothing else if you're looking for a drapey, delicate tulle. The underlining was a knit ITY and the lining was power mesh from Fabric Outlet in SF. The bodice was four layers: lace, tulle, underlining, lining. Same for the skirt top. The flounce was also four: lace, two layers of tulle, underlining. Overall, it was lightweight for a wedding dress. Photography: @apollofotografie Hair: @markdolan2

Cut day This afternoon I'm going to cut out as many of these projects as I can. The plan is to start construction tomorrow afternoon. On the docket: 1. Pink knit dress 2. Green formal (I'll be changing the back slightly) 3. Pink and Red striped pajamas (still sorting out which pattern to use) 4. Green linen dress and jacket 5. Some shots/outtakes of my #v8814 dress 🥰 This was a special make for the benefit gala for @goodnewsarts - where I teach occasional fiber/sewing workshops. I’m two seapatate sizes in top vs. bottom half - this is a straight 14. I’m between a 14/16 in bottom and between a 12/14 for top. Unfortunately, many big 4 patterns have these sizes in separate envelopes. I think I would recommend sizing down all over and may take this in in the future. This fabric was a special find at my local-ish @asg_jacksonvillefl fabric sale! I’m fairly certain it is a rayon. This is my big #memademay2023 project, as it’s taken me all month to complete 😂
