"A dream is a wish your heart makes!" Or sometimes a dream is a wacky idea that strikes you and doesn't leave you alone until you do it. Our princess company already had a Cinderella (the live action blue dress) - why would we need another? And yet classic Cindy is such an icon! There are two other party princess companies in town that have the parks-accurate blue dress with the light blonde wig, so the thought came to me that we should go more screen accurate with a silver dress and strawberry blonde hair. And despite being a last-minute harebrained idea, it turned out EXACTLY like I pictured 😍 Fabric is from @fabricdotcom and pattern is basically my own design but based around the #M7885 Angela Clayton boned bodice. And I have very interesting things to say about the hoop skirt (or more accurately, lack thereof!) but I'll save it for the next post. Time for the soiree of the century! My golden birthday is later this month, and tonight my friends and I are holding a giant masquerade ball! I love a reason to get absurdly dressed to the nines! I made this glittering extravaganza of a dress just for the occasion with a #M7885 bodice and hand drafted half-circle skirt and feathered stole. The fabric is one of my favorites to work with - I used the teal for my Ariel gown - a sequined taffeta from @fabricdotcom.

No matter what happens with the rest of this project I’ll always have this moment. A two-for-one cosplay! I made this corset by adapting Angela Clayton's #M7885 (easily my most used pattern!!) and using some black polyester I had on hand from another project. It works perfectly for both Briar Rose and Ariel!

What a day! What a project! I WAS SUCH A PRETTY PRETTY PRINCESS OMG what a dress. I love this dang #m7885 even though it was a hell of a learning curve (or as I like to call it “skill building”). Bones! Interlining! Cartridge pleats! Skirt hand sewn to the bodice! DID I MENTION ALL THOSE CATRIDGE PLEATS?! I fashioned a giant bow for the back to hide the zipper (the grommets and laces the pattern called for were a bridge too far when I had yards and yards of rounded skirt to hem, with a train). Would I ever put this much effort into a costume meant for half a day’s wear (IN 50F WEATHER I MIGHT ADD)? Hells yes I would! It’s Mardi Gras! King of the single-use costume days! I wanted to look like Lisa Frank exploded all over a Queen and I DID! Oh, so so so much fun. SO much twirly dancing. What a great pattern. I just need to finish the skirts pleating. I took a break though and made a cat bed with some extra fabric since the kittens kept laying on it.

POV: You’ve been collecting gold 1970s curtains for decades with no reason, and no idea what to do with them… until now! My favourite film of all time is Labyrinth - saw it at age 7, fell in love (with the setting, also with the Goblin King) and have watched it hundreds of times since. I HAVE HAD A BREAKTHROUGH! Yes, there will be pleats, but I did some math and some marking and there will also be a large section of gathers on each side . The bias tape has just enough bulk to effectively turn the gathers into teeny cartridge pleats, while the front and sides with be pleated at a little less than an inch. Clipping and basting will be a beast, but I think it’s going to work! #mardigrassewing #m7885

So, here we have it… my attempt at a vaguely historical ball gown for a Labyrinth themed masquerade ball… from 1970s curtains to something (more or less) wearable! 💛 This pattern is McCalls M7885, done in far too little time, with limited skills. So, the fit isn’t great, the sleeves had to be improvised, nothing on the inside was finished, the eyelets for the back lacing were all kinds of wrong… but I am enormously proud of what I accomplished in the time I had! I learnt a lot, and got much better with my machine in the meantime. I had the best time with my best friend over weekend too, and I was technically clothed, so I won’t judge myself too harshly for the result. Thank you to the wonderful @quitecommon for being the best and getting it on me with moments to spare before the ball! 💛 I will tell you though, I am never doing boning for a corset again.
