Yay! I made my first swimsuit💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾. Now I don’t need to stress about buying swimsuits that fit my many requirements. It’s not perfect but I learned a lot making this swimsuit. I have already worn it a few times so I can’t wait to sew the other views. The only modification I made was to increase the size of the band on the top for more coverage. Next time, I will sew size 16 for the bottoms as they were a bit too tight but it may also have been due to sewing the elastic too tight🤷🏾‍♀️. Day 5 of #BRAugust2022 and today’s prompt is “Beach/pool”🪡🧵 I made this bikini last spring to go on holiday. I wanted to make a vintage style bikini, therefore I used the #S8932 vintage simplicity top pattern. The only problem was that the pattern is designed to use a woven fabric and I used a Lycra… That’s why the top came out a bit too big. A few months later I made a second top that fitted me much better👙✂️. If you swipe completely to the right there’s also a picture of a swimsuit that I made one year ago. Feeling brave so be nice! Made myself a new bikini for holidays. Its a mix up of navy and liberty paisley print. Bandeau bikini top with liberty flounce then big pants for the bottom half. Whilst it's a bikini there's really only a couple inches of flesh to worry about Its a McCalls pattern and as always the pattern suggested I'm size Ginormous but in reality I fitted my normal UK size. First make for 2023 and it was my first ever attempt at swimwear 👙😒🤬😩 It was intended for Miss 17 and unfortunately she’s not keen on it now so it’ll probably go in the bin BUT I was determined not to have a UFO to start the year. I used pattern #M7168 from @mccallpatterncompany and while the pattern instructions were great to follow it was difficult to determine the right size, especially when it comes to cup size. The fabric is a gorgeous luminous purple from @dkfabrics and is only suitable for the beach as it’s not chlorine proof. It turns out Adelaide is devoid of swimwear fabric but thought for my first attempt it would do. Will I make swimwear again? 🤔 Yes! I tried making a 40s/50s inspired bikini by mix & matching two patterns together and I’m happy with the result 💙👙🪡 I really like the top, but unfortunately it’s a bit too big. I used a pattern that was made for woven fabrics, but instead I used a Lycra (which is very stretchy). Luckily I still have some left of this beautiful lycra from @Budgetstoffen, so I can make a second top. Do you like this bikini? I'm just really pleased with my swimsuit-making efforts. This is McCall's #m7168 and I love it! I'll definitely be making more of these. This is my second pair of bottoms from this pattern, and I've learned that to get the curvy fit I need for my booty, I need to grade the sizes just like I would for a skirt or pants. And thanks to the stranger at the pool who wasn't totally weirded out when I said, "Can you take a picture of me in my swimsuit for my sewing IG? Second bit of last minute vacation sewing - made some new swim bottoms! I had to redo the waistband 3 times...and unpicking serged seams on lycra is pretty much the worst. For years I’ve squished myself into swimsuits and bikinis I don’t really like. They’re never long enough in the body so not the most flattering ensemble bending me I half like I’ve been wrapped in rubber bands. Then I have a brainwave, hardly a brainwave, but you know sometimes it takes a while for the Penny to drop with me. Why not make your own 💡 So I searched for vintage style swimwear. My choices are The Bombshell by @closetcorepatterns which I’ve bought and have an emerald green swim fabric coming from @fabricgodmother to make. Bikini wise I chose #M7168 as I love the pleated high pants and then I’m dithering between the frilled bandeau shown here or the bra top option which I think I’ll actually go for. I’m picturing this in the black gingham from @heysewsister.co.uk which is lush, I just love the ditsy floral too. Then I need elastic and swimwear lining. These may just be the most expensive things I’ve ever made but hopefully well worth it and will see me fine for many a year. I do love the #estherswimsuit by @gertie18 but figured for a first costume which I want to wear as of today, boning and whatnot isn’t the one to start with. Pool day with my beautiful friend for her birthday. I'm wearing another make of #m7168 and still tweaking the fit. It gets a little better every time. Again, it's shocking how big of a size difference there is between my top and my bottom. Haha! No wonder it's hard for me to buy swimsuits off the rack. I want to use the #harrietbra as a model for the top, with all the lingerie-style topstitching (I build an underwire bra into all of my swimsuits) & crisscrossed straps in the back. Bottoms are #m7168, which I’ve made twice before & love, especially the ruched sides. Thinking about binding all the edges with yellow FOE, & maybe even using it to highlight the seams on the bra cup? I already have yellow gingham swimsuit fabric in the stash. While this adorable, tiny figure is not mine, the stitching is🧵. The 👮‍♂️'s niece couldn't find a suit she liked, so we made one instead. #sewingismysuperpower If you're looking for a good suit material, hit up @moodfabrics . Their tricot ones with aloe beads are buttery soft and sew super nicely 👍. The deets on this pattern (#m7168 ): The top turns into a hot mess pretty easy. The pattern is designed for 2-way stretch and I used a 4-way not realizing what a mess I was about to make. Everything from the ruffle to the closure was nightmarish, and the finishes looked sloppy. Thankfully I made a muslin. I used a thicker elastic to reinforce the bandeau bustline and convince the ruffle to behave, then we scrapped the closure and went with a closed, sports bra style band that goes on over the head. I obviously have a beach holiday on my mind!! Two pairs of swimmers in two days! This is the @patternsforpirates #sirenswimtop paired with the ruched bottoms of McCall’s #m7168 I lined the top with power mesh and it’s super supportive. This pattern is great for most bust sizes as it has 7 options! I omitted the lining in the sides of the bottoms to reduce layers of Lycra as I thought two layers was enough, there would take too long to dry after swimming. Swipe for pic with me wearing them.
