I started making a dress on Friday night, but ended up making 3 cozy Pyjamas by Sunday 😆 since I had one of those lightbulb moments mid-project — why keep making things that just sit in the closet, barely worn, only to be donated later? Instead, I decided to sew something I'll actually live in — hello, fleece, and flannel PJs! Spotlight had a 40% off sale (dangerous, I know), so I grabbed a few fun fabrics and whipped these up. One of them is already packed and heading to camp with my daughter tomorrow — so no photo of that one, but trust me, it’s cute! Adding the pockets from Helen’s Closet York Pinafore to Butterick pattern B6534. ⬅️ During this pandemic I made a matching face masks. __ Repost: #memademay2019 • Day 30 • Sew 'N Slay Project #47 made it into office and I found a new photo spot on the property.  This walkway to the porch is officially my runway. LOL! . . I absolutely have fallen in love with this first jacket/vest attempt and pattern collaboration.  The pockets… these pockets right here are everything! They are large enough to smuggle a hardback book in (yes, I tried it this morning). The thing that makes this project extra special is the bias tape.  The black bias tape used on the interior shoulders and pockets were apart of my grandmother’s sewing box. That bias tape it’s a piece of her legacy to me and in the foreseeable future I will choose to share it with another. . . #outfitoftheday: the #memade bits are the #upcycled top, the pants, and the scarf. . So this top. It started out life (the top half) as a short rayon sundress that's probably at least 20 years old. I wanted to do something with it, so I ripped it apart at the waist, and added a different skirt in a rayon end from @fabriclandcanada. This particular fabric was from last spring, and I'd been coveting it since it came into the store. I made a maxi skirt last summer with the same fabric, only I used it wrong side out in that case, for a softer look. . I really love this top - I think the two fabrics complement each other really well. The blue florals make me so happy when I wear them. . These pants. These pants! They started life as a fitting muslin for a new pattern (#butterick6534) that I'm thinking of for my next display sample for the store. This was actually the second fitting muslin, after I made some alterations to the pattern. The crotch seam was *way* too deep (it's a unisex pattern and I think was cut more for men). I had to get rid of 2", front and back, between the waist and the hips. I also re-drew the pant leg bottoms, because I like a little bit of a boot cut or a bell bottom instead of a straight or tapered pant. . I made the pants with some pure white fabric I had in my stash. It's a lightweight rayon jacquard with a satiny rose pattern all over it. I got it years ago to make costumes for a sacred dance performance at my church at the time. Four of us needed full white skirts, and since I was the only one with sewing skills, I whipped up the skirts, then saved the fabric afterwards to do something else with. (I have several Rubbermaid totes full of stash like this in my studio!) . The fabric was in lengths of about 3', so I sewed two pieces together to make a piece long enough for the pants. The seams hit at around the knee, which looks like a design choice instead of a frugal re-use of fabric. . I constructed the pants - except for adding an elastic waist - and then dyed them with turmeric. (Heat can degrade elastic, so if I'm going to have elastic components in the final garment, I add those after dyeing.) . Natural dyes (cont'd in comments)...

Its not the best picture of us but it’s the only picture we have from that night that was taken by a friend that I wasn’t quite sure was sober enough to operate the camera. It was pouring down rain. The kind of rain that encourages you to stay at home in your pajamas. But we couldn’t miss this holiday party. I worked too hard on this dress and the dress was a success. One more compliment and my head would be too inflated to walk out the front door. Any time I got separated from my husband, he said it was easy to find me in the sea of black dresses haha.
