I made this very last minute dress for a holiday party. I thought the cowl neck was a fun detail and I love how it can be styled in so many ways. Bodice pattern: @mccallpatterncompany 7047, cowl neck option. It says “easy sew” on the pattern envelope and I agree, it came together super fast; it took me about 8 hours from start to finish. The bodice is lined and construction is straightforward. Size and fit: I originally cut out a size 12 based on my measurements but after pin basting the seams and trying it on I realized it was way too big. I switched to a size 8 and that was much better. I think I could have gone down to a 6. Adjustments - I shortened the back waistline, took it in a smidge at the back center seam and lowered the arm scye which are typical adjustments that I make to my bodice. Next time I would raise the back neckline because it was just one inch too low for me to wear a bra with. Skirt pattern: I used McCalls 8142 view B/C skirt in size 8, minus the side slit so it’s basically between a half and quarter circle skirt. I shortened by 4 inches after construction because I’m 5’2”. Fabric: I used a 100% polyester knit velvet from @joann_stores It was surprisingly easy to sew and cut, however the dryness/staticky-ness of winter is making sure that there are velvet “hairs” coating every surface of my apartment. I used around 3 yards for the dress. I washed and dried my fabric before sewing it. I sewed with a size 90/14 microtex needle using a lightning stitch with length 3 and width 1.5. I lined the bodice with a Ponte knit for more structure, the skirt is unlined and unhemmed. I didn’t iron any seams. I knew that velvet has directional nap and I needed to place all my pattern pieces in the same direction on the fabric. However, I forgot that one direction is the “right” way and I definitely cut everything the “wrong” way. It doesn’t make a visible difference and I can only tell when I am “petting” the dress, but I would do it the “right” way in the future. #McCalls7047 #m7047 #handmadewithjoanns

One week on and I’m still thinking about all the fabulous creations at The Dressmakers’ Ball last Saturday. Also realised that I hadn’t shared my outfit details which people wanted, so here we go… To make this jumpsuit I mashed two patterns together. I used McCall’s M7047 for the bodice ( the draped back is the best bit & I stupidly didn’t think to get a photo of this!) and New Look 6816 for the trousers. I used elastic to gather the trousers at the top and then attached the bodice & trousers together. I had this fabric in my stash for years waiting for the right occasion to sew something special with it. It was a very cheap offcut from Abakhan fabrics, some kind of stretchy glittery plisse piece! I had to line the whole jumpsuit so you couldn’t see what’s underneath 😂 and used a stretch crepe from Minerva that had also been in my stash a very long time. As much as I would have loved to have made a full on ginormous ball gown, I just didn’t have the time and I also wanted to make something that I know I can wear again. Ready for spring! This is the sleeveless bodice of New Look 6301 and the long flare skirt from McCall M7047. I used a ballpoint needle and the zig zag stitch. This is my first time sewing knit fabric. I now LOVE to sew with knits! It’s so forgiving! Sadly, I don’t have access to my sewing machine, and I have been craving a good sewing session. So here’s a #throwback to last February. Huge shout out to @suzieannem 's mother, who was an integral part of this. Since we made the decision to get married in the winter, the idea of using velvet for the dress came to mind. First, I tried a few dresses on, but we soon brainstormed and discussed the reality of making a dress in about a month. Disco party vibes going on with this number💃 You know you’re getting older now when the next set of birthdays are now 50ths! 😳 So this little number was whipped up as the quickest last minute make ever, after purchasing this gold fleck black fine wool fabric for a total cost of c6 quid from the Birmingham Rag Market as part of #sewbrum Knew that I wanted an All Saints vibe with the back cowl, but just couldn’t find a specific pattern so I was left thinking of having to make something up. I then popped into the @thesewingcafeuk and found this @mccallpatterncompany #m7047 pattern at the back of a sale box. In the essence of speed required for said do, it was meant to be 💕 I hacked the pattern by making the front cowl drape longer and adding it to the back.
