The real victory of this holiday season? Finishing these dresses! After a few frustrating battles with stretch velvet (my sewing machine decided it was delicious), I switched gears and opted for trusty quilting cotton instead.
These patterns were both relatively easy but still taught me a few new tricks. The #newlookpatterns #n6774 was my first time working with rickrack, and it turned out to be surprisingly simple—just a straight stitch was all it took. The @simplicity_creative_group #s8895 had a clever elastic casing on the inside that was a bit of a challenge. Initially, I debated skipping it, but it turned out to be essential for keeping the dress from looking like a toddler-sized graduation gown. The yoke detail was a lovely bonus!
When it was time to put on the dresses, everyone cried, and my 5-year-old insisted on wearing a T-shirt underneath hers. Once I accommodated that, she was perfectly happy to cooperate. Oh, the joys of motherhood!
In the end, we had a Merry Christmas, and I ended up with two adorable, budget-friendly dresses that taught me some new skills. (Let’s not calculate the cost of my time, though!)
I hope your holiday sewing projects were equally rewarding/brought more joy than stress.
Also, I'm going round 2 with the stretch velvet for New Year's - wish me luck!
