Day 5 of @gertie18  #MeMadeMay2025 challenge. my favourite decade has to be the 1950s. I love the timeless elegance of the 50s. Especially the designs of the 'New look Period' which started in 1947 when Dior launched his collection. celebrating opulence and femininity now rationing had finished in the US Although here in the UK rationing didn't end until 1954 so we were behind on the extravagant garments which took yards of fabric. I remember my sister who is 18 years older having the most beautiful full skirted dancing gowns which she gave me to dress up in when I was still young. how I wish i still have them now but I can remember the vividly. one was an ivory organza with tiny velvet polka dots and the other a dusky pink taffeta, both had net underskirts incorporated to the dress and matching stoles. so here are a few of my 1950s inspired outfits from Gerties patterns. the first is the Charm Betty Dress in minervadotcom exclusive linen viscose 'Tiger kingdom' second is the  peggy bodice with sweetheart neckline and stanwyck three quarter circle skirt. Ther fabric is a cotton sateen also from @minervadotcom and Ihad enough fabric left to make another Brooklyn jacket, I left off the collar and lengthened the sleeves to make them full length. the hat i made a while back on a vintage millinery course at London college of fashion, the hat was based on a design I seen from the 1950s and whats more all the materials apart from the Tafetta bow were true vintage, the tutor had this amazing 1950s straw parasial straw capeline and this vintage netting which is nothing like the netting we have today and it was blocked on 2 vintage blocks from the amazing blocks they have at LCF the third is a more casual look, Audrey pants with a Joan top  and last but not least is Simplicity 9286 ‘patterns by Gertie #MinervaBrandAmbassador #MinervaMakes #MinervaMakers #MinervaBrandAmbassadors #minervamakers #makers #charmbettydress #bettydress #patternsbygertie #charmpatterns #diornewlook #1950sfashion #charmbettydress #audreypants #simplicity9286 #s9286 #joanslashnecktop #memademay

I just remembered that I never posted this project from October! It’s a Simplicity 9286 (formerly Butterick 6094) sewn with a cool large print Cotton Poplin from @moodfabrics! I made it for @djclulow and @chanelchristen‘s wedding, finishing up the hand-sewing the day of the wedding, naturally. I didn’t get a photo that day, but here’s how it turned out. This years first sewing project was a mending project. This dress I made in april last year, was my first time working with satin. It was a struggle, to be honest, but it came together in the end and was so pleased with myself that i cose to ignore the ill-fitting midriff. Today, I took the middle part of the dress apart and discovered that the front midriff-part was very streched and looked nothing like the pattern piece. So I cut a new one in fabric that was pre-interfaced The last pic is before fixing. Not very obvious, but the fit and movement has improved a lot. The fabric is from #fæbrik who sold deadstock fabric from #bytimo. New favorite make! Just finished this dress in viscose satin from #bytimo. An absolute nightmare to cut and sew, but apart from some bulky action in the midriff section, it came together pretty good. Happy Halloween 🎃 🤪 I never shared this dress I made years and years ago. I'm surprised I was still able to zip it up! 😅 Definitely not wearable for long wear..it's a bit tight. When I put it on I was like "damn this is a messy job" 🤣 so I definitely have grown in my sewing skills..or I was just being lazy for this who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️ However.. I will remake this in black for a wedding I think and will have to do some altering: -armholes need lowering (way too tight) -bust darts need taking in -waist needs to be taken out -I'm wondering if I need to lengthen the body and if that seam under the bust actually needs to fall under the bust or not. The star of this dress is obviously the @m_o_l_l_y_m_o_l_l_y fabric - I just LOVE the sneaky little legs on the strawberries 🍓🦵🍓🦵 🍓. I used #B6094/#S9286 (seems like it was rebranded from one to the other at some point) and I love having the contrast collar on the back. As I posted this I noticed the tape on the invisible zipper is poking out at the back… will have to go fix that now! 😅 . Finished 6/25/23. Very happy with this #simplicity9291 mashup with the petticoat from #simplicity9286 (a circle skirt with a ruffle is so much fun). I’m considering using the bodice part as a base for a bra pattern, so I could have less visible bra straps in theory. The visible bra straps don’t bother me, and I don’t really care if they bother anyone else tbh. So this is the dress I made with this fabulous new vintage style  simplicity fabric called 'On the Beach' ahead of its launch which was  kindly gifted to me by @craftcottonco along with this contrast Teal cotton.  I decided to make a Summery dress so I picked Simplicity 9286 pattern by @gertie18 . I have had this pattern in my stash for a while and decided this would look great in this fabric and contrast back collar which is a feature of this dress (see 2nd image) and matching contrast midriff section with the teal fabric. The dress was a little short for me and I didn't have enough fabric to make it longer so I decided to add a strip of the contrast on the bottom which I actually really like.
