There are so many things I love about this dress with lots of style details to give it a really interesting look. It’s structured, but flowey, has button tabs for a tailored look, nipped in waist and voluminous shape to the back bodice. I made this dress using fabric gifted to me by @longancraft , which is a pretty cotton broderie anglaise. The pattern isn’t lined, but with this fabric it needed to be so I bought some similar toned, light blue voile from Pound Fabrics and cut 2 of all pattern pieces. Instead of lining as a separate ‘dress’ on the inside, I took an interlining approach, layering the outer pieces and lining together and sewing them as one piece. This did mean in a few places the dress was heading towards being a bit bulky so there was a lot of careful grading and I omitted the interfacing in a few places where I didn’t think it was needed for this fabric. The volume though that this fabric combo has created adds to the nod to vintage style of this dress which I love. This dress has a fabulous swish and movement coming from the structure and weight of the skirt. It would flow very differently with a drapier fabric and that’s something I am sure I will try out in the near future! As soon as I saw the @simplicitymccallsaustralia McCall's pattern #M8556 I was desperate to make it. I'd been (im)patiently waiting for the paper pattern to come to Spotlight but then I saw a PDF sale at Sew Direct the week before the Sew Melbourne Garden Party and figured it was fate... She was now mine! Thanks to my favourite A0 printer @planmakedo.com.au I had my grubby hands on it. What fabric screams garden party more than this delicate floral cotton sateen that @tricky.pockets generously destashed my way. I had to pad out the metreage with this blush cotton sateen as the dress is a hungry hungry hippo 🦛 the pattern called for 5.4m at 150cm width, but my fabric was only 127cm so it ended up using about 6-7m instead. I also added a seam to the inner yoke piece to avoid using more. Those skirt pieces are bigguns! I added horsehair braid to the hem (my first time) and some bling trim at the waistband, but those are the only edits I made. I originally added length to the skirt (about 3cm) but I took it back out at the end because I didn't want to limit the shoes I could wear with it. It's insanely comfortable and swooshy 🤩 All the notions (apart from the label) plus the blush sateen are from @spotlightstores I wrote a few notes to myself for the next time I make it (there will DEFINITELY be a next time) and here they are in case you decide to tackle it for yourself: 1. Overlock raw edge of sleeve facings 2. Don't understitch sleeve facing on facing side (visible when cuffed), try understitching the main fabric side instead 3. Don't need to ease stitch facings - can pull gently into place 4. Usually I am a very impulsive sewist. I do have plans, but I don’t always stick to them and things can quickly change as a new idea pops into my head. It’s not normal therefore that I have a project that has that much planning as I get to them pretty quickly, but this one was different. This project started life in planning at the end of last year. The team at @Longancraft asked me to collaborate on a project. I had a quick browse of their beautiful fabrics and was immediately in, having chosen my fabric, this pretty broderie cotton, quickly. But, moving countries puts a bit of a delay to such plans 🙄 and I am so glad to be able to finally share this one with you 🎉 The original plan for this fabric was not this dress, but when this pattern launched it quickly pipped the original plan for a charm scout dress! This is the McCalls M8556, a pattern I was instantly smitten with as soon as I saw it. I love the nod to a vintage style and I truly love how the dress turned out with this fabric. The colour is such a pretty soft blue and it’s created a gorgeous volume on the skirt. I have really appreciated the style details of this pattern and I’m glad I took my time to get all the extras in place to give it the end result I wanted, from colour of the lining to the finish of the buttons (which aside from looking just as I wanted are made from dairy waste !!) The construction was very straightforward, and I’m so happy with how this worked out. This might not be a dress for every day, but it’s going to feel special when I do wear it. The back bodice is one of my favourite design features. It creates a really elegant style as it gathers out from the yoke and then back into the waistband.
