I made this shirt from Simplicity pattern S9295, which is one of the retro/vintage Patterns by Gertie series. The fabric is a terrific retro spaceship fabric from The Fine Cloth Company in Thorndon, Wellington. This was one of the first things I had sewn in probably ten years or so, and the instructions were great and easy to follow. I did the size 16, with some extra space (probably 4cm in total) added to the arm scye and the sleeve hem width due my arm measurements. It is really comfortable, and the type of sleeve means you can move your arms without any restriction from sleeves. I did a pocket on both sides, and increased the number of buttons down the front (just personal preference). School is back tomorrow and there’s a definite autumnal feel in the air despite the glorious sunshine we have in Cornwall today. The nights are drawing in, the air is a bit fresher and those golden autumnal tones are apparent all around. It’s also fungi season so perfect for showcasing this blouse. I finished it a little while ago but only just got round to taking some pictures. It’s the @simplicitymccallsuk #s9295 vintage style blouse that I made with a remnant of @lewisandirenefabrics #foxandfriends print. The pattern called for 2metres but I squeezed it out of a 1.6m remnant by omitting the tie and pocket. I also used a plain fabric for the facings. I sewed up a straight size 18 with no modifications and I’m pleased with the fit and the ease. It’s a woven fabric so no stretch. The sleeves are a bit tight but I think that is down to my body rather than any problem with the pattern. No pattern matching as I just didn’t have the fabric to play with but the print is so busy, I don’t really think it matters. I cut the collar out so that the mushrooms on the back are in the same direction but, due to the shape of the collar, they are lying down at the front. I’ll live with this as there was no more fabric left to redo it! I also used mismatched buttons from my collection because why buy new when you already have 100s??? I’m pleased with the finished result, I love the gentle shaping and the rounded collar which give it a vintage vibe. So here is my attempt to make Simplicity pattern s9295. The end result is not great, but wearable (maybe). First off it's way too big. I measured myself more than once and cut the pattern to what they recommended. I've had to put some pretty big darts in the back to nip it in about 2 inches. Next I feel like the pattern didn't leave enough room for a placket. The collar is a little squished and overlapping. I can get away with this if I leave the top button open or wear the shirt with the bow. I could not get the sleeves to fit. They just seemed too big for the armholes. In the end I gathered the sleeve at top and made it have a little ruffle. And lastly I really should not have used gingham as I found it impossible to match up the lines. TFW you need to source fabric quickly, so you thrift two shirts that look the same, but you weren’t wearing your glasses and they aren’t the same, so there’s an upside-down chest pocket in the side panel My work wardrobe is mostly inspired by masculine lines, but I love the juxtaposition of these puffy sleeves. Me mades on vacation! My husband and I recently returned from 10 days in southern Spain, our first big trip since Feb 2020. It was utterly wonderful and exhausting and I want more! A highlight, among many, was a visit to the Roman city of Italica just outside Sevilla. Totally worth the bus ride from the city center. And a great spot to show off my latest blouse! Pattern: Simplicity 9295 by Gertie, view A #s9295 Fabric: Textured woven, probably poly or poly/cotton, a $6 find from @fabmoinc Oh boy, sizing. I rarely make big 4 patterns but am aware they tend to have a LOT of ease. Per the size chart, I'm a 14. After measuring the pattern I made a size 10!! Then I took in each side seam by 1/2"!! It still doesn't look as fitted as expected but it's still cute, comfortable, versatile, and added a vintage touch to my outfits. My sewjo had been on vacation for a while but of course, just to make an impending vacation more stressful, I decided it was a great time to whip up SEVERAL items to bring with me. After working myself into a tizzy I finally calmed down and narrowed it down to a few items. Out of those, only this shirt came along. Lol. Cry. Finally found the time to post two new makes. The first is a blouse in cotton poplin from @minervadotcom made up in Simplicity #s9295. I found the pattern quite big and therefore added two darts in the back to remove some of the fullness. The second is a top made using fabric that has been in my stash for some time.
