🕷️🕸️Spooky Season Dress 2023!🕸️🕷️ I made a ghost dress last year and a spider dress this year. I think a spooky season dress might be my new annual thing. This fabric is stretch sateen and I embroidered spiderwebs all over it. There is a little spider in one of the pockets 🕷️. I don’t make a lot of pencil dresses, but I really like this one! 🖤City Hall🖤 Was I completely stressed for three months to try to get these two cardigans done for our city hall ceremony? Yes. Was it absolutely totally 100% worth it? I think the photos speak for themselves. Vinny's cardigan is the Porter Cardigan by @meggospurls knit in @dererumnatura Gilliat in the color Granit purchased in many panics from anyone who had more skeins including @shoplamercerie @brooklyngeneralstore @artofyarn . The size is between a six and a seven. I wanted to maintain a consistent ease over his body without all of the changes happening at the side seams so I added extra purls between cables and reduced those down as I reached his chest, kind of like vertical darts. I think I nailed it. My cardigan is the First Cardigan by @hive_knits in @campfiberyarns in the color Crackle. I knit the size 6. Very happy with this #simplicity9291 mashup with the petticoat from #simplicity9286 (a circle skirt with a ruffle is so much fun). I’m considering using the bodice part as a base for a bra pattern, so I could have less visible bra straps in theory. I'm so happy with how this dress I made for my cousin's wedding came out! 💐 I used a teal polyester satin fabric from Aliexpress. The quality was even better than expected! It was a great deal, too ($16.97 for 5 yards!) I had never worked with satin before this project, but tips I picked up: 1. Cut on the cross grain. If your straight seams are on the cross grain, they are less prone to puckering at the seam line. This tip is from a Catherine Sews Youtube video & I tested it before committing to a cutting layout. I also read in Bridal Couture by Susan Khalje that cutting long verticle seams very slightly off grain reduces puckering. 2. Use a microtex needle and replace it often. I went through a whole pack of Schmetz 70/18 microtex needles. 3. Clips instead of pins. I found clips much easier to manage on this project, and didn't worry about snags from dull pins. Also, with a 5/8" seam allowance I can keep the tip of the clip on my fabric without it getting in the way of my presser foot, so I could leave them attached while sewing. 4. Use a rotary cutter to cut out pattern pieces. Seriously. 5. Interface where you are putting your zipper. I used Pellon P44f. I also basted in my invisible zipper. Honestly, I think this is the cleanest Invisible zipper I've ever done. I'm very proud. For the pattern: I traced the front and back neckline from #S9291 (reprint of #B6453) onto my bodice block. The soft curve coordinates well with the curves on the skirt pieces. I also like this neckline because it has a lower back, but not so low I can't wear a normal strapless bra. For the skirt, I used #S8637 View C and added an additional flounce layer. I shortened the flounce pattern pieces by about half, and stitched them together before attaching to the skirt. If I made this dress again, I would: 1. Shorten the straps. The points where the bodice attaches to the dress sag a fair amount when my shoulders are relaxed and I get wrinkling in that area. 2. Add more ease at the waistline. 1/4" at each side seam would be good. 3. Trim the seam allowance on the flounces and skirt to make it easier to match them at the stitch line. I struggled and got some bunching.

Wearing my trusty Gertie #s9291 dress I made last summer to my artist reception. I don’t use this account to share my photo or painting work, but I had the best time putting up pieces at the library along with the other members of the artist collective I’m a part of. (Sorry to be vague, no details unless we know each other IRL) I’ve made this dress pattern more than any other pattern I have in my collection. Here, I’ve lengthened it to mid calf and added a ruffle hem. I also made the straps tie on the shoulders instead of the adjustable flat straps. It’s the perfect flowy summer dress, but I made it work in this mid spring cold with a turtleneck layered underneath. I’ve made this dress long, short, out of jersey, gathered skirt, pencil skirt, and more. The princess seams make for the perfect fit. All around super solid pattern. 🫰

Twelve Days of Stitchmas, Day 11: Early Creation vs Newer Creation ✨ Butterick B6453 in 2020 vs The Barbara Bodice in 2023 Early Creation: Butterick B6453 (now Simplicity S9291) I made this dress in October of 2020 and I’d only been sewing for 8 months at the time, and the fit on this bodice is totally off. There is a ton of extra fabric up at the top and in the armpit area 😅 I put it together without a muslin, just to have something spooky to wear that Halloween, but I only wore it once and I was never happy with it. I put this pattern aside, thinking I’d eventually go back and troubleshoot the fit once I had some more experience with fitting, but I never did, because.. Newer Creation: The Barbara Bodice from Gertie’s Patreon ✨ I’m thrilled that Gertie redid this pattern with her new Charm sizing! It was so, so much easier to fit this bodice than the Butterick one would’ve been. It actually fit pretty well right out of the gate just going off her size chart. I did have to shorten the waist and make some adjustments to the princess seams, but I have a few more years of sewing under my belt so I actually understand how to make those changes now! I’ve made 3 dresses with the Barbara Bodice so far - the version in this photo was the first one I made. Simplicity S9291 Finally sharing my proudest make of the year & maybe to most challenging too! When my cousin @ariellerandell got engaged I offered to make her something. She followed through & trusted me to make her reception/after party dress. At the beginning of the year she sent me inspiration pictures, short beaded dresses. In April Arielle came over, tried on the 3 toiles I had made & we decided @simplicity_creative_group #S9291 in View B. Next we drove to Philly & visited @fleishmansupplies which had so many perfect options but both fell in love with this colorful ombré jeweled mesh fabric. It was not the fabric we were looking for but both fell in love with it. I also bought liquid satin to match to line the dress. This was definitely my most expensive single piece of fabric purchase. The wedding wasn’t until August, but the fabric stayed safely in the closet until July, when I finally started. I started by adjusting the length of the skirt by 6” & raised the slit. Then it was time to make that first cut. I first sewed the lining which I underlined with white viscose & then underlined the mesh with the liquid satin. I was able to sew most of the top on the machine working around the gems since they were more spread out. But for the skirt with the density of the gems I had to hand sew. The pattern had princess seams and darts, fun! The best way to describe the fabric was like sewing through an obstacle course, all the gems were all different. I don’t remember the details of how I got the zip in or hemmed it- I just got it done. Thankfully when she tried on at the end of July the dress fit it just needed a few adjustments. I handed off the dress to her the night before the wedding. While I knew it was well sewn I was still nervous. At the reception I went to the restroom, came out & she was in the dress. I may have been like a helicopter cousin checking on her straps all night but she danced nonstop. While there are no posed photos in the dress, it did exactly what it was made for, to celebrate! #twelvedaysofstitchmas day 9!! Most made or worn item. My most worn item is probably my golden girl's skirt. But my most made outside of gathered skirts is S9291 and S1609. I love the versatility of S9291 I always get lots of compliments on it and it's such a easy make. So is 1609 I've made some with bows and some with collars.
