I finished my wearable muslin of #v1620 with armscye modifications! It's in a lightweight cotton shirting remnant from the @nycmetromod scrap table that really isn't a great color for me. But the shirt is finished well (no skimping because it was a "muslin", I want to practice pretty much everything) so I may wear it a few times before donating. My first attempt at this shirt (leopard print, scroll back or click hashtag) was uncomfortable in the front armhole and too tight in the back shoulders. I traced the outline of the armhole from a McCall's pattern that fits better onto the pattern pieces (which ended up being the equivalent of just lengthening the armhole depth by an inch without having to a remove an inch from anywhere else), and added 1/2” to each end of the armhole binding strips. It fits so much better! I also frenched the seams instead of serging, and stitched in the ditch instead of hand sewing the bindings. I think I used ALL THE PINS to make sure I caught the bottom edge. Ha. The shirt is still a little bit voluminous in the middle for me but I'm not sure I can slim it down and still get it over my shoulders. So it definitely looks better tucked in, which is how the model wears it. I'm very tempted to try to make the high waisted pants from the same pattern envelope but the thought of fitting them is scary!

Working out some fit issues on #v1620 (Tom & Linda Platt for Vogue) using some cotton shirting left on the @nycmetromod scrap table. It's not a fabric I would gravitate towards purchasing and wearing, but I'm withholding judgement until I see it with a solid dark bottom (a lot of beige/creams/greys etc make me look like a corpse so yeah). I'm focusing on finish, because even if I don't end up keeping it 1️⃣ I'm learning/practicing skills and 2️⃣ I'm making something someone else would be happy to wear. I've made the top once before in a synthetic leopard print from @fab_scrap (scroll back in feed or check the hashtag) but the armholes were too high and tight, and there was pulling across the shoulders in the back. To try to fix I traced the finished armsyce edge line from a McCall's pattern that fits me well onto the vogue pieces, lining up at the shoulder. In retrospect this was pretty much the equivalent of slashing and lowering the armscye by one inch, but didn't the require slashing and removing an inch from the rest of the shirt. I *think*, based on my not so accurate measuring, that this modification added 1" total to the armhole circumference so that's how much I added to the armhole facing pieces. I will tackle sewing those on tonight!

The pattern was easy but the fabric was such a challenge! This is the blouse from #vogue1620 in very lightweight slippery bamboo jersey. It was a challenge to find something to make that would be flattering in this fabric and I can’t explain to you how fiddly this fabric was to sew up into this top. The chainstitch on my coverstitch machine as well as the regular two needle coverstitch helped enormously. I enjoyed making a chain thread button loop for the first time for the back opening instead of a hook and eye (swipe left for pattern and details). I finally finished my first blazer (#v1620 but like a size smaller and in a heavier than recommended fabric, I always find the ease is off on vogue patterns 🤷‍♀️). Unlined but with (VERY COOL) contrast facing and binding, shawl collar, shoulder pads, bracelet-length sleeves. Main fabric is a cotton jacquard from @wearethefabricstore. (Also the dress I’m wearing is one of my makes as well, it’s a lengthened @papercutpatterns Sequence dress in a gorgeous batik from @fabricdeluxe 🙌🏻)

I’d had my eye on V1620 for years and finally bought the pattern in a half price sale a few weeks ago. What a wonderful trouser pattern this is. I like high waists and super wide palazzo pants under most circumstances, but these are really flattering and surprisingly quick and easy to make. I had been put off by the use of plastic boning, but it’s really just a little bit of stiffening in the waist facing. Boning in a corset top, where the stitching shows, had to be very precise. This doesn’t show so you can’t really go wrong so long as you remember to trim the plastic so it doesn’t stick through the seam. I increased the rise by 1” to suit my shape but these trousers are already very high waisted so the change was not necessary. There are no pockets and they fasten with an ordinary invisible zip at the back, which is a relief after making a couple of pairs of trousers with a jeans style fly. It’s the fabric that really makes these trousers great. I deliberately searched the Minerva Brand Ambassador fabric list for 100% linen and this is the most classic and quintessential ‘lineney’ linen fabric I could imagine. It’s thick, but soft. It presses well but quickly gets that wrinkly ‘elephant skin’ feel that is so characteristic of real linen, without getting large creases. The fabric is not exactly slubby but has a classic linen texture which makes it forgiving in terms of hiding any imprecise hand stitching. This fabric is wonderfully stable and easy to sew.
