First time I attempted flat felled seams and bound seams where I couldn’t manage flat felled. Learnt some new skills and some that I need to practice. Right now I’m happy to have this in my wardrobe and I’m going to enjoy wearing it on repeat. Minerva recently released their new kits and I chose this classic white denim jacket kit using Simplicity 8845. As always, it’s such a treat to receive everything needed to start a project! I never owned a denim jacket and it was so fun to finally make one myself! I really love working with denim and doing all the topstitching. Although the kit comes with copper topstitching thread, I decided to go with white. I pinned all the tissue pieces together for a quick half mockup and saw that I needed to make a few significant adjustments to the pattern for a good fit. I wrote about all the adjustments in detail in the post over at @minervadotcom (link in bio). I really love the end result - a denim jacket is really the perfect summer-to-fall transition piece and I’ve worn this one numerous times. Now I really need to make a classic blue denim version! I recently had the opportunity to make this denim jacket using one of the new @minervadotcom sewing kits. It was my first time making a denim jacket and a big project- not one to be rushed! 🧵 The pattern is the @simplicitymccallsuk S8845 by @mimigstyle which is a unisex denim jacket. The fabric is a medium weight black denim with a very small amount of stretch. I got everything I needed in the kit which took away the stress of having to source the right jeans buttons, top stitch thread etc. 🧵 I made a small size grading to a medium at the waist. It is a unisex jacket so if you are curvy I would advise measuring and considering grading between sizes to make sure it fits. I also shortened the arms. These were very simple alterations to make and I didn’t bother with a toile as it’s not a super fitted garment. 🧵 I really love this jacket- I think it’s a classic that I would wear all the time. I made the Mimi G Style denim jacket S8845. It was a slow sew and a challenge to get the fit right and do all the top stitching. I am very pleased with the result. I am so pleased with this #memade @mimigstyle #simplicitypatterns green denim jacket! About a week ago I watched the @norrisdantaford sew along on YouTube. Four days ago I got to work and I just love the result! I did a broad back adjustment by making the back pieces a little wider. According to my muslin that was sufficient, and it worked. I shortened the sleeves and overall length to mimic the fit of the jackets I like to wear to school. This fit just works really well for me with a camisole and skirt. I did flat-felled seams until I thought I was going to begin swearing, lol, and then I switched to surging and using gray bias binding, which I like a lot. Near the end of the process I also just made the waist band according to my own whim and added button epaulets to the sides of the waistband. So, style-wise I improvised but the jacket came together EXACTLY according to the pattern and the YouTube video. The denim is a 7oz and is from Joann's. The buttons are also from Joann's. I got a gift card for Christmas:) The green doesn't show up right in any of these pictures but I think this is the best I will get on these dark days. Happy is an understatement! This couldn’t have turned out better. It has taken me several months to find just the right fabric for this project. It’s a cotton Broderie anglaise. I wanted it to have a bit of weight and not too uniform in the pattern, also larger than usual holes. This monstera design does the trick. Found at the wonderful @thefabricshopnz - can’t wait to come and show the lovely person who sold me the fabric as promised 😉 I’ll be twirling in the door one day soon 😁😁 Pattern #Simplicity8845. Earlier made a muslin so knew where I wanted to tweak - reduced shoulder width, lifted arm, shaped side seams. I left off the front side pockets for this make (would’ve added too much bulk and masked holes). Lined the breast pockets, bands, collar with cotton voile & interfaced. This is a great pattern even without any changes. However it’s NOT a quick make. Be prepared to cut A LOT of pieces. The #loisdress by @tessutifabrics has been my most worn dress recently. ⁠I recently cut a new dress in an end of roll piece leopard rayon. Can’t wait to finish it!! ⁠ Love the empire waistline and the v-neck, despite it being cut a bit low. I’m so happy with this denim jacket - I think all the little details really elevate it. I really took my time, especially with all the top stitching. There were a lot of pieces but it was a rewarding slow sew which took me several weeks in sections, taking breaks in between. I’m especially proud of the welt pockets even though they’re far from perfect. 🧵 The pattern is the @simplicitymccallsuk S8845 by @mimigstyle. #S8845 has been on my to-do list forever but I always felt like I lacked the skills. After my sewing binge these last few months, I decided to tackle it and I’m so so in-love. Just waiting for proper cooler weather and I’ll be wearing these every day. The blue daisy jacket is slighter larger - afterwards, I cut the pattern down a size for the turquoise rose one but love the variety different size jackets offer so I’m a happy camper. It’s been a while! I have still been sewing, but whilst staying in temporary accommodation it’s a bit harder to photograph things. But soon, very soon I’ll have my own sewing room again, in my own home here in Wellington. It’s been a lot of big changes, and too much time away from my husband, but the end is in sight now. 😍 I can’t wait to be together again in the capital, with new beginnings and adventures to be had. I watched @norrisdantaford make this on YouTube last night and I have done all the techniques so I feel confident.
