#Friday Fail - chronicles of a sewing F* up {double tap if you can relate} I know we share pretty things in this space… but not every project works out and we should normalize sharing those too 👇🏾👇🏾 sooooo… I made Simplicity 9701 using my #fabricroulette pick for February… and I jacked up the neckline soooooo badly! My hubby picked this fabric for this challenge and I figured I couldn’t go wrong pairing it with the Black Girl Uniform that is S9701. But boy was I wrong!!!!! First up, I shoulda sized down one more to the 14 at the neckline, shoulders and armscye. I was minded to do so - as this has become a comfortable starting point for knit fabrics - but I had chosen a knit that didn’t have the stretch percentage as per the knit and pick or whatever that stupid thing is, so I started with the 16 and blended out to an 18. Then I made my adjustments, as per usual, and took my time cutting my pieces on a single layer to get that window pane to line up. I tried it on and was gutted because it was too big, so I did the ‘on the fly; sew the shoulder seam deeper’ trick. That trick did NOT treat CAs my neckline still was too big. It needed to be adjusted on the flat pattern so it didn’t end up so wide! Then to add insult to injury? I stretched out the bloody neckline when trying to understitch the facing… KMT The result? A poorly executed dress that has taught me, even when you make the effort, shit can still suck! The rest of my dress fits okay, and I’m proud about my pattern matching but I just can’t see past this neckline! Welp. It's another simplicity sewing fail. Does anyone else have huge sizing problems with big 5 patterns? I used the finished measurements and it is at least 2 sizes too big. Silver lining is that I used stash fabric so #sewingmath it was free? So disappointing when you don't actually end up looking like @mimigstyle 😂 Will size down to an 8 and see how that goes. I think this pattern is going to get a lot of use because I love this dress. I’ve made #s9701 before, this time I left off the sleeves, finished the neckline with fold over elastic and went with a straight skirt with side splits. Just a girl, her handmade Christmas dress, and a festive little tree 💃🏽🎄 Pattern: @simplicity_creative_group #s9701 I knew I didn’t want a body con dress like this is drafted but loved the square neck so I free handed a more A- line skirt starting at the waist line on the pattern piece. By the hem it was 2” wider on each side. I will also say the neckline was a pain for this. Even with the understitching it’s was rolling to the outside and this super stretchy fabric had it gaping whenever I moved slightly. After I took these photos I added elastic to the neckline and it is perfect. Now no matter how I move (or bend down) it’s firmly in place. You can’t even see a difference besides a better fit! #memademay day 17 — This tank dress is made of a surprisingly soft and substantial knit from a random rack at Joann’s. The pattern is @mimigstyle pattern #S9701 from Simplicity and this was a sleeveless test just to see if the fit was right. Added side slits for ease of movement, ended up absolutely loving it. I need to make more. Pics from beautiful Burlington VT, where the mural matched my outfit. Got to visit the extremely charming @stashfabricvt, where owner Robin printed out a PILE of PDF patterns for me (gonna be fun to wrestle onto the train later, but the price was too good to pass up). I also picked up a DIFFERENT pattern, some delish pale robin’s egg blue double gauze for—let’s be honest—probably another button down, as well as some lovely random buttons and binding. I love finding local fabric stores!!

My Mother was an old Mother at the time of my birth, so her style was 1940s.💃🏿 Those beautiful old world silhouettes where people wore heels, skirts, and pill box hats to the supermarket. I know she would have loved this dress. She probably would have wanted me to make her one but since I can't anymore, I've made her one, in her honour. MimiGs beautiful, easy #s9701. This dress was easy, no doubt, but I had fit issues... I think it's all the dog walking. It seems like I'm losing my curves 😕🤷🏿‍♀️ Hopefully over Christmas🎄 I can get them back 😏. Anyways I love this dress it's warm and comfortable, and honestly, I feel like I can wear it anywhere. The Old Mauve Cable Knit Jacquard stretch fabric was bought in 2021 from an online Etsy store called Marlei Fabrics. It's soft and the colour is stunning. 😍 Also I did a little scrap busting and made another hat, which I gave to my friend for her grand daughter and a bunch of pillows which I stuffed with scraps lol ...there's a pic of some of them there somewhere. @simplicity_creative_group pattern by @mimigstyle was such a easy and quick pattern. I made most of it late Wednesday night before Thanksgiving and finished it up the following morning. I initially cut out the dress two sizes two big but this was an easy fix, I simply took an inch off of the sides of the dress and the facing. I may go back and taper the bottom more. I will for sure made again. Fabric is a ribbed polyester spandex. Very thick and stretchy.
