I've written up a blog post about what I made, enjoyed and generally got up to during 2023. See the blog for the full ramble, but a few highlights: 1) Visiting Marrakesh in November to celebrate my 40th birthday 🎂 (wearing @closetcorepatterns #PietraPants & a @sonnydraws tee). 2) Making a second #V9253 / #V1735 (& matching headband with my fabric scraps) to wear to my cousin's wedding. 3) Having a good sort of my repairs/UFOs baskets and finding this #V1558 dress waiting for a few final seams to be sewn, just in time to wear it on a weekend break in Paris. 4) Falling in love with Our Flag Means Death and making a @dpstudio_fashion #le203 bomber jacket in the same fabric used by the costume design team, which I have worn constantly since. 5) Visiting Japan to belatedly celebrate Phil's 40th birthday, which fell during the peak of covid/lockdown (wearing a top which will be my next pattern release). 6) Weaving regularly this year (I completed a bath mat, and three scarves to give as gifts) thanks to joining a regular class, plus attending a week-long summer school in weaving double cloth during August. 7) Completing this #M8318 vintage Laura Ashley set which I started on my 39th birthday in time to wear it for my 40th. I have some really fun projects in progress to start 2024 including woven shoelaces, patchwork shorts, a new coat for Phil plus the moomin jumper I've been knitting off and on forever, and the first holiday is booked, travelling to New York by liner 🚢

31 days of handmade Halloween day 7! So happy with how this one turned out! I bought this fabric from @moodfabrics over two years ago and I just never wanted to make anything with it. I decided it was because the fabric was white, and I don't really do well with white. I'm too careless and clumsy. As soon as I dyed it orange, i couldn't wait to work with it! I made the #m8318, which is a vintage reproduction. It came out way too big, so there are pleats under each arm and way the back. I made thisssss!!! 😆❤️ Out of an old bedsheet from @goodwillintl using McCall’s pattern #m8318 — this my fourth make since reconnecting with sewing but I learned a ton of new skills like top stitching and gathering. I also hacked this pattern to make it into a top instead of a dress! I made a commitment that I wouldn’t buy any new clothes this year — which had a bumpy start — what I didn’t expect was how much joy and creative zip sewing has given me. Everything is a source of inspiration now, where before it was a ‘want’ and trigger for more and my wardrobe not being right or my body not being right etc etc … and honestly, I feel like a changed human being. On my birthday, last November, I started making the blouse and top from @simplicitymccallsuk M8318, which is a reprinted 1980s Laura Ashley pattern. I have no idea why it's taken me quite so long, but I recently finished sewing the set! This is the blouse, sewn in a @libertyfabrics cotton lawn (which was last year's birthday gift from my brother). You can't really see all of the details here, but the blouse has pintucks on the front, full sleeve caps, and ruffles around the collar and the sleeve hem. It was the first day of a trip to Paris today. We walked up the Eiffel Tower, visited two museums, and ate lunch in a park. I also walked into the first hairdresser I passed this afternoon and requested a fringe trim as we set off for our flight straight after work yesterday, and I forgot to give it a trim first ✂️ You can see the improvement between photos 4 (before) & 2+3 (after)! The hairdresser was an absolute star and it was the most dramatic fringe trim imaginable so top marks for entertainment as well as making me look less shaggy for the rest of the holiday. @mccallpatterncompany #m8318 #mccalls8318

I have been working on this pattern for ages. It started life as the #m8318 and it just didn’t work for me. The instructions were terrible (sort of expected from the big 4) but these do take the cake. I hated the big patch pockets (personal taste). I thought I’d love them but I really didn’t. Then I tried to salvage it with various bodices and I think I’m happy with this final result. Because of the panelling on the front of the skirt of the dress (for the patch pockets) it gathered in such a weird way that it made me look pregnant. I think it looks ok now. So I’ll take it as a #lossturnedintowins with this lovely fabric. I just really wanted to salvage it as I love the pattern on the fabric. Those hearts are just the cutest. I never got around to sharing pictures of this blouse and dress from McCall’s #M8318, a reproduction vintage Laura Ashley pattern, worn together. I fell in love with the pattern artwork as soon as the reprint was announced, and ordered a copy of the pattern as soon as it was released in the UK. I made pattern Views B and D, which look really cute paired together on the pattern cover, in size 14. The blouse is sewn in a Liberty tana lawn, a birthday gift from my brother, which I choose with this blouse in mind. The blouse has ruffles around the collar and at the sleeve hems, pintucks on the blouse front, and full sleeve caps. For the dress, I chose the simpler view (without a ruffle at the hem) and used a fabric from my stash. The dress has some light gathers, absolutely enormous pockets, and a working (but unnecessary) button closure at the back. As we approach the end of the year I've been thinking about what I made this year (sewn, knit, woven), so expect a few catch up posts. When I look back there's always more projects than I realised, including, this year, two jackets, three dresses, and three weaving projects (possibly four if I get my skates 🛼 on). @simplicitymccallsuk @mccallpatterncompany #mccalls8318

This is the second part of 80s Laura Ashley set @simplicitymccallsuk #M8318, a pullover dress in some fabric from my stash, the origin of which is now forgotten. It has a button detail on the back yoke, gathers on the front and back, and very satisfying huge pockets. I emptied the pockets today and I'd unwittingly amassed a collection of tickets and receipts in there without realising. It's paired with a vintage blouse from a charity shop. The blouse is actually part of a set with a matching skirt; the skirt is too small for me so I'm planning to see if there's enough fabric to cut it up and make shorts (possibly quite short shorts, if required). This blouse is another thing which had been sat unnecessarily in my refashions basket for ages, but has recently moved into my wardrobe. We decided to visit the antique/flea markets in Saint-Ouen the day I was wearing this, and it felt very fitting to look at old things in a vintage top and dress from a vintage (reprint) pattern. 💚💛White is nice…but what about CHARTREUSE?!💛💚 It’s my surprise neutral of the year. Dyeing this blouse took many twists and turns. I used @ritdye , and the first color (using Neon Green and Lemon Yellow) was great, but I thought it was a little cool. I added in some Rose Quartz to get some warmth and it went marigold. More Neon Green and Lemon Yellow and we got to this perfect color. In the previous dye baths, the lace, fabric, and thread all took the dye the same. But on the last round…magic! ✨ my pal @kindred.red , my best making buddy and dye guru, thinks the silk cotton was saturated with dye molecules and couldn’t take anymore, but the cotton thread and lace could. So I ended up with slightly more neon lace and buttonholes. And I love it. I love the extra definition of the lace. It really makes the pattern stand out! I love happy accidents like this. 💚 and I know this is going to slip into my wardrobe so well. It also shrank a bit. And I’m not sad about that! I know some of you are dying on the inside—“Jenna! Why didn’t you keep it white?!” 😜 but a shirt this lovely deserves to be worn!
