This ruffled wrap dress was always my white whale - it was never in my size and then the price skyrocketed to over $100! I was SO excited when @simplicity_creative_group reissued #m8358 a couple of years ago! I snapped it right up and immediately made two in @libertyfabrics Tana Lawn! I made this two summers ago ahead of a trip to the Cotswolds, and it gets lots of wear when I can tolerate ironing it! It’s 4+ yards of fabric! I’m pretty sure this is a 10 with no mods, but I can check if inquiring minds want to know!

My next sewing project…. McCall’s #M8358. I have been excited and scared to start this project all at once. When the pattern came out last year, I jumped up to get it. But I’ve always been intimidated by vintage patterns, so that old feeling of “I can’t” sunk in and it sat in my stash for another year. One of my goals this year is to approach more vintage patterns, and I hear that this one is pretty easy. After all, the instructions are just one page! 🤯 I chose this white fabric from my stash. It’s 2 4-yard bundles from Walmart… so a total of 8 yards of fabric. After cutting all my pieces last night, I have about a yard left. I know the white fabric might seem plain to some, but I think it’s ethereal and calming. I’ll be working on this today and probably throughout the weekend. A bit of a different take on the wrap dress thanks to a Laura Ashley 1970s vintage reproduction from McCalls. 🏖️Beach Scene Laura Ashley Dress 🏖️ I made this dress quite early in the summer this year and ended up wearing it loads, which is obviously very satisfying when you've spent so much time sewing it. I think because it's wrap so it's super comfortable and 'any size' day, plus there's quite a lot of fabric in this dress but it's linen so it was a great option for the many days when it looked quite sunny but wasn't sure if it was going to get chilly, but might still be warm etc etc!! And of course it's reversible! So almost 2 dresses in 1. I thought I would prefer the square neckline option but actually I ended up wearing the v neck one more often. Made Laura Ashley vintage 70’s dress with Cotton poplin bought from @spotlightstores / Size 10 ViewA / Mods : Shorten bodice by5cm. Shorten ruffle by 5cm. Took one panel off from the ruffle pieces. 🏖️Beach Scene Laura Ashley Dress 🏖️ Finished my holiday dress and photographed it...on holiday! 😁 I made version B which is without the frill on the bottom of the skirt. As the whole dress is only drawn in with elastic the fitting was really easy. The one issue I did have was that the armholes were a little bit tight. I read Amy's @almondrock_sews great blog post of her version after I had already started sewing, otherwise I would have been forwarned about the small armholes! As it was I just made them a little wider with the fabric I had and they're ok now, I don't notice them after I've put it on. I've worn this dress I think 4 times since I finished it last month which is definitely a successful make 🙌 Full details on my @minervadotcom page. Hey, we’re halfway through #memademay and I’m still doing it! 🙌🏽 This is #m8358 (in a quilt cotton) that was all the rage maybe 2 summers ago? It’s one of those patterns where you have to have some blind faith that it will come together because it’s a fabric hog AND bc of it’s wrapped nature, you don’t really know if it is going to fit until it’s constructed. 😅

Day: 19 #memademay2025 I am starting this week in a new #memade that has been on my list for sometime, McCalls 8358 . This is a vintage 70’s (me too!) Laura Ashley gathered wrap dress. I have seen so many that I loved that I had to make it. The dress can be worn two different ways with the square neckline or more of a V neckline. It’s an interesting pattern to put together and you really can’t toile it without putting it 90 percent together so I took a chance with sizing. I sewed this in a beautiful botanical print in a soft cotton voile and it is a perfect weight for summer. The only adjustment I made to the pattern was to remove 4 inches from the length. I am sure this will get worn plenty during the summer months. I went to visit my favorite llama and enjoy an afternoon out in it. Hope everyone has a great day! I purchased the original 1980’s pattern from Etsy a decade back, but it contained only 1 size. I needed a larger size and was happy to get the layered pattern. The fabric is a 80 or 90’s new old stock bed sheet from Etsy for $30. The pattern needs a lot of yardage so this was economy for me. The second photo shows where I cut the ruffle from the top edge of the sheets and reattached it to the bottom. #sustainablefashion #slowsewing
