#memademay day twelve 💖💓🩷💕💘💗 This is what happens when the bride tells you to go all out with the matching wedding outfits. My most ambitious matching outfits to date! (and let's be honest, probably ever because this was so much work) Connor is wearing #s8528 suit, and I'm wearing a #bubblefrock both in hot pink velvet 👯 The suit pattern is honestly pretty easy, but I made it so much more difficult for myself with the fabric. I did Hong Kong binding on the blazer, because it didn't come with a pattern for lining, which made it a much longer process. I also had to do a lot of hand sewing on this project which made it take even longer. I had originally made myself another dress, but hated it, and luckily had enough extra fabric to squeeze this one out of in a frenzy two days ago. This dress is way cuter though so I'm glad I did! This is the same as my last version, with length added to the bodice. Also velvet is the worst! It hates being pressed, creases super easily and has left a fine dust of pink fibres all over my living room. There they have japanese baths. Every time you go there you used to get a yakutan cotton robe. So we have ended up having about 10 robes at home that none wants cause most people have been there too!!!! So for years now he has dreamt about turning up to one of those conference presentations in a suit made of the fabric from these robes. At last I caved. Because valentines for me is about giving something to the people you love and who is there for you everyday💕 And because I think it will be hilarious to go that fancy dinner at the spa restaurant, he has promised me in return, dressed in this😂. All the giggles we had doing this and thinking of all the places and people we can joke around with was really fun. When making a quilty garment it good to think like both a quilter and a garment maker 🤔💭✂️ As a garment maker I had to figure out how to modify my pattern (Simplicity 8528 #S8528 ) for a bulky material 📜📐 As a quilter I had to figure out how to finish the edges (spoiler alert — lots and lots of binding) 🧵 . . I actually made eleven mini quilts for this patchwork blazer 🧩 This gave me more control over pattern placement 🕵️‍♂️ It’s also easier to quilt a bunch of mini quilts vs a twin sized one! 💪 I used @aurifilthread Forty3 for the quilting and construction since it’s super strong (and it’s my favorite Aurifil thread lately)! It also works well with a high speed machine like my @janomeamerica HD9. . . Instead of lining the jacket I backed the quilt panels with gorgeous Liberty cotton. I used the same fabric to make bias tape to neaten all the seams and the jacket edge👌🌸 . . My #dcfrocktails2020 sequined blazer ✨ this was the perfect jacket for the event ✨ I had extra sequins from my NYE bomber jacket so I decided to transform that look into something more formal 🎩 I even used the same lining fabric because I was so in love. . . The blazer is #S8528 with a bunch of mods ✂️ Added a full lining ✂️ Added functional sleeve vents ✂️ Modified hems, vents and lapels to avoid any sequin-on-sequin action 🧵 I used a silver satin underlined with cotton muslin for the main fabric. I overlaid the mesh sequins on most pattern pieces, avoiding the underarm for better movement (these mesh sequins are prone to catching on each other, just ask my bomber jacket). It’s lined with @riflepaperco rayon lawn. . . These mini sequins were super easy to sew with, just extremely messy ✨ I’m still finding random sequins in all corners of my house weeks later 🧹 . . I sewed it on my @janomeamerica 9400 mostly with my HP2 walking foot (my fav). I used @aurifilthread Forty3 which I like for garments, plus some 50wt when I had a better color match. . . I also made coordinating tuxedo pants and a Liberty button up shirt. #SewOrganized for 2020 (2 of 2) 📅 Another thing that keeps me organized in my garment sewing is my dress form. Or now, my dress forms 👯‍♂️ I made up this blue linen version earlier this month using the custom @bootstrapfashion pattern I purchased last year. This is the third one I’ve made, and it went together fairly easily this time around 💪✂️ . . I hate fusibles 🙅‍♂️ so I underlined the linen with muslin on the cross grain instead of interfacing everything, as the pattern suggests. I stitched this together in @aurifilthread Forty3 for extra durability 🧵 . . Then I made this @riflepaperco canvas blazer with the fabric I bought for my sewing machine cover (see previous post). I purchased the fabric at @threelittlebirds.sewingco, and bought a little extra “just in case” 🙃 I needed to test out a @simplicity_creative_group pattern #S8528 for a future project, and it seemed like the perfect excuse 🤷‍♂️ It’s unlined, so I bound all the interior seams with double fold bias tape in navy lawn. Suit jacket for my VERY hard to fit hubby. 2 muslins and lots of pattern alterations later, I have a decent though far from impressive finished product. Lots more to still learn about men's tailoring and fitting. My hubby will nevertheless brag about it to anyone who will listen. Definitely a keeper he is, though I cringe a bit when he calls attention to my work. Pattern is #s8528, unlined "costume" jacket. I skipped the optional interlining as the washable midnight navy stretch twill from @fabricmart I used was already quite beefy (but a joy to work with.) I added bindings to most of the exposed seams using some fat quarters cotton I had on hand. I also added sleeve heads, made from leftover polar fleece covered in the stretch twill, and an internal pocket he wanted. Made the shoulder pads removable by adding snaps. #sewapril2020 Since I left my job in Higher Ed, I've not worn a blazer and have not looked back. Hubby doesn't routinely wear them for work, so blazer making has only come up once in my sewing life. #magamnovelnovember This project was novel on so many levels! The jacket alone is novel! The fabric was a novelty sheet from Pottery Barn. Sewing a men's suit jacket was a novel experience. Using the embroidery function on my new sewing machine was a novelty. You get the drift! 😂 I used #S8528, an unlined jacket pattern. I used the halloween satin from #fabriclandcanada for the intetlinining. That was a fun experience. 🙄 I think doing a proper lining would have been better. Live and learn. The Rudolf label was from the sheet set. Ron had requested the made with love by Nana label. He was so excited and proud of this jacket that I just had to monogram it for him. I copied one of my husband's suits and placed it on the front facing of the jacket. That way he could also show it off. I'm told he received many compliments on the jacket last night! My only fear is that it's white!
