#memademay2020 Day 4 Such a busy day and a baby that just wanted cuddles all morning. The breakfast dishes did not get done till lunch and once I got Edward and Odelia to sleep at the same time, I had a nap too 😴 Today's make is a bolero that I made for a wedding almost 3 years ago. I was 37 weeks pregnant with Josephine and needed something to keep me warm in June. As both the fabric and lining are both a heavy satin it is nice and warm and it a comfy choice for baby wearing. The stats Bolero - #v8957 Adjustments - Sleeves were widened significantly as the original pattern did not fit and a narrow shoulder adjustment on the back panel that I have to do on everything I make. #memademay2020 Day 25 So this is my second attempt to photograph this dress after my failed attempt on day 19. The fabric for this dress is very sentimental to me as I bought it with my sewing machine back in 2009 and it was the first fabric to enter my stash. I didn't end up using it until I made the dress in 2015 and bolero in 2017. I needed a pattern that I had sewn up a few times to have the confidence to cut the fabric and when I made this dress I had already sewn up this dress 5 times. The bolero started its life as a wearable toile (fancy sewing term for a draft) and I am so happy I made a toile as the sleeves from the pattern did not fit. For the final version which featured on day 4 I lengthened the sleeves slightly and widened them significantly. The sleeves on this version are the length they are as I had to recut them out of the original sleeves and this was the longest I could fit sideways across the old sleeve. When you are trying to photograph the bolero you made but the baby wants a cuddle . This bolero is the vogue #V8957 and I made it last winter to wear while pregnant with this little monkey. I also made Josephine's dress for her older sister. It is so nice to be able to use the baby clothes again. Manipulating some of the lines in #v8998 for the bodice and tracing the curve of the waist from #v9103 onto a straight gathered skirt to create an updated Jackie Kennedy look. The wedding was amazing, they danced in the clouds and yes, there were fireworks.

I made two costumes for the school musical, Matilda Jnr. I wasn’t aware of these characters - The Acrobat and Escapologist - they feature in a story telling sequence! They looked great on stage, we enjoyed a sparkly floor at home for quite a few weeks. 🧵 Acrobat’s jacket was based off #v8957 I made my own collar. 🧵 Skirt was a modified #m6838 🧵 Escapologist cape was based on a vintage costume pattern and I added the collar and tie. Silver fabric came from @themakersocietyaustralia and satin from Canafa Fabrics in Campbelltown, NSW. Great for costume sewing! #rosalindsews

My sewing journey was not completed until I created the whole outfit. I had created a silk bolero with wonderful lush frills and lining. Alas this bolero looks a bit much together with the dress and took away the charm of a draping neckline. (I decided to create a second one, more simple version from cotton jacquard and lined it with silk to tie the whole outfit in.) It looks great as a separate statement piece and adds luxurious vibes to any outfit. And the silk feels just awesome on the skin! This was followed by some bag sewing. I bought a romantic hardware clasp with a short handle and a chain and followed a you tube tutorial to draft my own bag. Nightmare! I attempted to follow the instructions for a piping but it was an uneven disaster and I ended up unpicking all of it and sewing it without the piping. The process of sewing a metal clasp to a bag was a slow painful process, my poor fingers are a witness to it. And here it all is. This is the 7th time I have made this dress, it started as a commercial pattern but I have adjusted it so much that is now unrecognisable, mainly because I have modified it to suit breastfeeding . Breastfeeding pattern hack . Next time you are sewing an empire line dress fully line the bodice with the front lining in dress fabric facing forward and sew this to the skirt leaving the front of the bodice loose. I personally find it most comfortable to make the front piece longer and add pleats shape the bodice as elastic can distort the shape of the dress. I just love holiday sewing! Here's a red silk cocktail dress I created from vintage pattern McCalls 4425, along with a bolero I made using @teliofashion lace and Vogue 8957. I added the neckline ruffle to give it more flair, and the gold lace trim at the hem is a beautiful material I picked up in Tel Aviv, Israel last year.
