#transformationtuesday How about this refashion? I used to feel like refashion was THE most intimidating sewing but my feelings towards it are changing. I’m really starting to enjoy the challenge and process. I used a #simplicitypattern for my guide at the top to transform this into a fitted skirt. There’s a myth that sewing is cheaper than buying RTW but it’s not. Refashion and thrifting are the exceptions. The dress was $12 plus the pattern $2 and the $3. All total this cost me $17 plus my time. I have a similar pattern and it takes 5 yards of fabric. Most fabric is $12 a yard but on sale I might get it for $6. Best case scenario this is $30 worth of fabric plus zipper and pattern it’s $35 in supplies. This would have been way more labor intensive had I had to do the gathers myself. School day ##????!!!! Greetings and another happy Monday to you all! Our weather is slowly starting to get warmer here in Chicago, so I figured some shorts were in order. I made these about a year ago, but they are obviously not work appropriate, so I hadn’t photographed them yet. They are view B of simplicity 1370. I have made two of this view so far and have plans to make view A this summer. I found this pattern originally on the blog @goodbyevalentino. The fabric is a wool, silk, linen blend from vogue fabrics. I love it so much because it looks like linen but doesn’t wrinkle! The only changes I made were to add a cotton lining and the white trim to the legs and waist. I included an invisible zipper (can’t recall if pattern called for that or not?). This pattern was very easy to sew and fit. It also requires less than a yard of fabric so is a great way to use up those remnants! I know people will ask, but the top and shoes are @katespade. I actually have a pattern really similar to this top which I plan to make this summer as well. So many plans...... Have a great week! Only one more Monday post left in this school year. Planning my first ever #makenine and given my output last year and the fact that Seattle remains locked down, I’m going to try to do a “make nine” each quarter of 2021. I’m hoping this’ll help me focus on making things in season and get to projects long on my list. So here we go, from top left: 1. #caramelsweater by @petiteknit — maybe in a light grey? 2. Knitted #kumulusbouse by @petiteknit — this has been on my list forever and I got the yarn and pattern for Christmas 3. A simple knitted beanie — I made this one a year or two ago and it’s easily my most worn hat. I want to make another! School day #14/180. Happy Monday all! What a lovely and refreshing weekend. My only goal was to start my new sewing class (which I take on Saturdays each week most of the year @voguefabrics) and to get some much needed extra sleep. Both missions accomplished! I actually wore this outfit to my new sewing class but am not wearing it to school today. As you can see in the pic, the shorts are not longer than my fingertips (a loose school dress code rule), so I will not be breaking this rule today. I figured I would give you a glimpse at what “weekend Kim” looks like ;). My husband said he liked this outfit a lot (and usually he mentions little about what I wear-go figure!) so I feel like it is a winner. I made these shorts from #s1370 which is my go to pattern for shorts. I have made one other version of these which I posted about this past spring. They are cool and comfortable since it is still very summer like here in Chicago. The fabric is a cotton canvas from @textilediscountoutlet which was again very reasonable. I think all materials included these shorts cost me less than $10 to make. Sometimes sewing does save you money! I definitely didn’t think this fabric was brown when I bought it (thought it would be a dark blue denim) but it’s grown on me! I recently completed this two piece faux suede suit for my Jo Grant cosplay from Claws of Axos. If you’re familiar with the serial, you might say, “but Gretchen, she wears a brown Jacket!” And you’d be correct. For a blink and you’ll miss it appearance, she has a pink jacket on that matches her skirt exactly, and then puts the brown jacket on top for the remainder of the story! This fabric came right out of the home decor section, and it’s definitely less peachy toned in person than it’s coming across on camera. I was afraid that my sewing machine wouldn’t be able to handle making button holes through the thickness of this fabric, so the jacket is fastened with hidden snaps and the buttons are just for show. I bought the buttons online, and they’re lighter colored than I was hoping, but they’re okay. Might switch them out if I find something better at a later date. I used pattern #Simplicity1370 (view D) for the skirt, and #Simplicity4953 (view A with modified sleeves) for the jacket. I still need to get a belt for it, as you can see in the incredibly poor reference photo I included in this post. Overall I’m quite pleased with how this turned out. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to make the brown jacket, as I cannot spend any extra money right now, but someday I’ll be very excited to live my 70s fantasy in this fabulous outfit.

Happy Sunday all! The summery weather continues here in Chicago, so I am still making summer clothes! I find making short never climbs to the top of my “to do” pile, but I really like wearing them when I seek a more casual look. They are also an easy sew, so I don’t gravitate toward them as I am usually trying to challenge myself. That being said, sometimes you just need a quick and easy sew! I started an assembly Line this week aiming to make three new pairs with #s1370. I ended up cutting out two pairs to make multiples of view B. I have made this pattern twice before. The first time I made the waist too snug and had to then add back length to the center back waist when I made my second pair. Now the fit is pretty much a sure thing. Having used two very different types of fabric tho- they turned out totally differently! This fabric is a relatively crisp cotton with a bit of stretch from @afabricplacebaltimore. It was leftover from my shift dress I made earlier in the summer. As you only need 3/4 yard to make these shorts, the pattern is a great scrap buster! The other pair of shorts is still in process as I realized the fabric was too thin and without enough structure initially. So I am adding a lining and as such they are taking more time! Stay tuned for pics of those. I definitely recommend making a test garment first when making pants or shorts to get the crotch curve and depth right. That always takes me a minute, but once it is done I can use the pattern over and over! Enjoy the rest of the weekend! Day 26. Skort! All the fun of a super short skirt with the built in safety of shorts! I made these last week in a stretch twill from @fabricdotcom. They are a little big after some wear so I might take them in but we will see if a super hot wash adds some shrinkage first. My summer uniform always include an army green short and this year these are filling that spot in my closet. Days 20 thru 25? Some weeks put you thru the ringer, I had one of those and the first thing to go is photos of me in clothes I make. Happy sewing Sunday! Today you get a full me-made outfit :). This top is view A of #m7899 made from a scrap I had of the lining to another jacket. I love this rayon print from @voguefabrics but it was super slippery to cut out. If anyone has fabric stabilizer tips I would love to hear them! The shorts are my go-to #s1370 view b of which I have made maybe 7 pairs now! I love the streamlined look with the rear zipper. Next time I will add welt pockets now that I am getting pretty savvy with them! The fabric is a gorgeous cotton ponte which I used to make another dress and had this little 3/4 yard leftover! Happy new year to you all! I am SO happy to see 2020 head into the rear view mirror. Looking forward to a covid vaccinated and happier 2021 (fingers crossed). This is my third version of #m7575 view B. As with my previous version, I eliminated the front darts but otherwise kept it the same. I made it out of this gorgeous Egyptian cotton from @moodfabrics. This cotton is so luxurious and soft. It was a joy to work with and to wear! The shorts are my tbt pattern #s1370 view B. I lined these as the fabric (a printed cotton from @voguefabrics) was quite thin, and they lay much better with the cotton liner I added. I think both pieces will be in regular rotation once we have warmer weather back home. We say goodbye to Florida tomorrow as we start the long drive home. Looking forward to some winter weather and sewing hibernation after an amazing 6-week stay here in Florida. I have two more pieces I made here which I am going to try and photograph before we depart.
