The famous #b4790 #walkawaydress! It’s a controversial pattern but I love mine. It’s bad in a breeze but on the other hand, it’s really cute. My operating theory is that it pretty much only works on small to medium busts. If a high neckline in a rigid fabric doesn’t flatter you, you will most likely find this tricky to fit. . . . I’m pretty sure I’ve never showed this off, my #b4790 #walkawaydress (from the modern redesign). I know this pattern gets a lot of criticism but I actually think this really works for me? My theory is that the design only works for people with fairly small busts, or else it just doesn’t really work. My version isn’t perfect: if I make it again I’ll redraw the armholes to be a little higher and maybe pull the bust in a little more. But it’s very wearable! @peppermintmagazine #peppermintwraptop in my favorite fabric, cotton voile, from @moodfabrics This fabric was repurposed from a left-for-dead attempt at the legendary Walk-Away dress by #mccallspatterns #b4790. If you don’t know the lore, the pattern was advertised in 1952 as so simple you could start it in the morning and “walk away” wearing it by “luncheon” 🤭. It was so popular that at one point McCall’s printing plants (one of which was here in Dayton, OH) stopped production on all other patterns to exclusively focus on the walk-away to keep up with demand. But fake news: the pattern asks you to let it hang on a dress form overnight to balance the hem. Also the amount of bias tape is absurd and a rolled hem would be faster 🙄 obviously I never “walked away” in my attempt and abandoned it in my scraps pile for almost a year. That is, until two months ago when I hacked it up like a Halloween horror film into this top. I’ve been majorly downsizing this season and using my scraps pile has been a fun challenge. This is my fourth time making this pattern but the first time setting the sleeves with French seams. I’m going to try to post pictures of me wearing the clothes I’ve made, even if they are ages old. Some of them I made so long ago I don’t remember when I actually made them. I made this Butterick B4790, also known as the “Walkaway Dress”, at least 15 years ago, possibly 20. I’ve seen so many complaints from others on the fit, I ended up making it nearly two sizes smaller, using the finished measurements as a guide and I love the fit. The final sewing project completed over the hols was the finishing touches on this walkaway dress. This was more of a fun ‘see what it’s like’ experiment than a ‘I want to make a garment for everyday wear’. I’m not a rockabilly kid, but if I was, this would be a fun dress because it definitely gives that hourglass shape. Since this was an experiment, I was a bit careless in fabric selection. I like the colour combo and the print- but the feel of these fabrics is not so nice- I don’t think this will get a lot of wear even though it is a pretty-enough dress. I did a few mods: after researching a bit I learned that all the darts tend to make a pointy-boob situation, so I did 2 out of the 6 in the pattern and I’m happy with that choice. I opted to hem rather than use bias tape. And I turned the front buttons into a long ties that can wrap around the front or back of the dress. This one is basically a May make, because I made it on the 31st of May. #memademay Before I go into the details of the dress, I would like to give a big shout out to my son, who clicked these beautiful pics for me. Not being biased, I think he did a pretty good job, given that he was clicking them standing on the other side of the road and it was 9:00 pm while Sun was taking it's course to say goodbye for the day. Coming to details of the dress. This one is yet another make using Duvet cover.Just like the Pattern says, it was super easy to make. But I made some changes that catered to my needs/liking, can call it my version of retro butterick #4790. I added a waist belt tie instead of buttons to secure, knowing that this version wouldn't be secure enough with just buttons. Like I mentioned earlier, it is a supre breezy make, very roomy, and will be my go-to dress for summers. On the other side, will I be making more in this pattern? Yes, definitely! #天下一洋裁会2021 Day31：乾杯/こんなの出来ました！ Butterickの#B4790 、ソーイング・ビーで見ていいなーと思って作った訳ですが、また似合わぬ物を縫ってしまった……（声：井上真樹夫） 折角、角っこも完璧に縫ったのに（2枚目）。 仕方無いので、妹にやりました（3枚目）。私よりは似合うので。 生地はシングル幅2m✕2、前後とも中心で接ぎ合わせにしてギリギリでした。リップル生地なのですが、平面になってしまうのでアイロンは最小限に。 市販のバイアステープはゴワゴワするので、自力でローン地から作りました。釦ループは2.5 cm幅に切って0.6〜0.7cm幅で仕上げ、リボンは4.5cm幅→1.5cm幅に。 元の型紙では前も後ろも釦で留める仕様だったのを、一寸きつかったので、リボン結びに変更しました。後ろは普通に結ぶだけですが、前は釦ループを4つに増やして両側に付け、そこにリボンを通したため、着脱が超絶面倒に。元の釦に戻して、妹には痩せて貰うしかありません。 今月は引っ越しがあったり、主人が寝込んだり、実家に行かなきゃだったりで思うように時間が取れませんでしたが、天下一洋裁会を楽しませて貰いました。 投稿を見て回るのもままなりませんでしたが、後でゆっくり拝見したいと思います。 主催のみかぽんさん、スポンサーの皆さん、参加者の皆さん、お疲れ様でした＆有難うございました。
