Next up, I headed to @thepostmansleg to join in for the Miss Deluxe pageant. . I made my dress using Simplicity 8876 which is a modern reproduction of a 1940s pattern with a lovely soft crepe floral fabric from @spotlightstores . It has massive pockets which were fantastic! Due to the softness of the fabric, I built some basic foundations in a sturdy cotton lining with some boning on the sides so that I knew it wouldn't move/slip. Also due to the softness, I didn't add the shoulder drape the pattern had but instead made it a wrap to wear around my shoulder using some nice silky fabric I found at @emporiumsnz . . I had seen some pictures of vintage palm leaf fans online so after asking a million questions to @kikikissesnz , I made my own in a 1920's hand fan style. The base is 2 layers corflute with wood vinyl over one side & paint on the other (due to not having enough vinyl). I got a selection of different palm leave sizes/shapes/colours to go between the corflute layers like a sandwich to create the fan. I wrapped the handle in some rope to give it a bit more texture/security. They were super fun to make as I had never made anything like it before. . I made my headpiece with a cascade of flowers & more of my palm leaves. I also made my 920s style necklace & earrings using wood beads & green glass beads to match with my fans. . I carried my fans in a wooden & rope basket, had matching wooden shoes & a wooden bangle all found in opshops. Some green @whatkatiediduk stockings finished off my outfit. . For the first time ever for a pageant day, my set worked!! I'm very open with how I struggle with my hair so it was amazing to actually have it go well when I'm not practicing. . My first ever sewing post and it's a special one! I made #S8876 from @simplicity_creative_group for my PhD graduation. I used a two- tone/complementary kente print ankara fabric purchased from a local store to honor my culture during the ceremony. This pattern is definitely for an intermediate to advanced sewist and required multiple fit adjustments around the bodice and skirt bottom to achieve the desired look. I fully lined the dress (vs. just the bodice) for structure. I also didn't attach the stole, but pleated it and opted to wear it in different ways around my shoulders. I tried a new sewing technique - boning - and look forward to perfecting it in future makes. I got this fabric off @makers_resale because tartan and seersucker? Come on! I knew I wanted to make something dressy with it, and couldn’t stop thinking about something strapless. Found this vintage pattern re-print and the rest is history. . . . I made a size 10, reducing the bust by 1/4” (just sewed the two side seams at 6/8” SA at the bust) and taking the waist out by 1/4” (again, just sewing the side seams there at 1/2” SA instead of 5/8”). My measurements at this time are 37”B, 28.5”W, 38”H. I also originally made this a shorter length but lengthened it, which gives a bit of unfortunate bulk at the knee, but longer is definitely the right length! I made it slimmer in the skirt from the mid-thigh down to make it more tapered, as it was rather boxy before that. . . . ID: a thin white woman with tattoos and blonde hair pulled back into a low bun stands wearing a strapless, shin-length dress. The dress has a small black-and-red tartan print, has a fitted bodice, and a tulip skirt that starts at the natural waist. I originally made this as my MOG outfit. Yes, my son got married in November. And though I started to sew something new for @dcfrocktails, time was not on my side. So, I harvested a sequin dress I had thrifted and added feathers to a bag I found in the back of my closet. A few hours and a bottle of glue later, a new outfit was born. #S8876 This fabric was a bed cover (I think)see last picture. I purchased it in 2007-2010 in Japan, hauled it around the world with me. Japan to SoCal, to Netherlands, to North Carolina, back to Japan. In 2017/18 I made a So Classic Sundress out of it, and this dress is what is left of the fabric. 😅 Every last bit. Finally cutting into this lovely fabric so I can start my frocktails dress. Hoping to do this gently, taking my time and not racing towards the end. Tonight’s task was cutting out fabric, interfacing and lining. Then mark everything/tailor tack and finally iron on the interfacing, I am still deliberating over which side of the fabric to use but every time I come back to the minty white base with navy leaves. I see lots of people putting up their frocktails progress. It’s lovely reading them and seeing wonderful creations. Here is my progress: The toile is finished and it’s not bad. Think it fits okay although there is no lining or boning in it just yet. I thought I didn’t like this fabric. I have tried to offload it in destashes and to friends. I thought it would be a good toile due to it being a jacquard. But it looks good in this dress. The stole is optional but I think I will make it. #sydneyfrocktails2024 was a hoot last Saturday night! I just love seeing everyones smiling faces and all the outfits. I well and truly broke my wearing green streak with my golden number. I hacked the daylights out of the bodice of @simplicitymccallsaustralia #s8876 by curving the neckline and adding a peplum, using @wearethefabricstore gold brocade. It was a dream to sew! And I’ve never worn pants to Frocktails so thought I’d crack out my very old pattern of newlook #6943. I think I bought that pattern in my early 20’s! The pants are in a simple satin from EM Greenfields! I hope I get lots of wear out of them but maybe not so much future wear out of the bodice though! I even had my hair and make up done which is a first so I felt super special. Thanks to the Wednesday & Thursday morning class gang who helped me with decisions on my outfit!! Frocktails is quite the family affair around here - Mr Usefulbox takes the photos on the evening (we get to have a nice quiet dinner before everyone arrives), Master Usefulbox packed the goodie bags and Miss Usefulbox gave me a cute little note the morning after cos she missed me.
