Tie waist trousers 👖 These were one of my first makes of the year. They are a hacked pair of Simplicity 8389s in a discount woven check fabric from @spotlightstores. I am really proud of myself, because I feel like I jumped a big hurdle in making these. I was (and still am) scared of making pants, as they seem so technical and good fit matters, A LOT! And yet here we go - I did it! I chose this relaxed style that looks tailored (maybe because of the front pleats), but are a very simple construction. I cut off alot of length and tapered them so they weren't so wide in the leg. Today I wore a pair of shorts that I made using @simplicity_creative_group #s8389. These shorts have two front pleats, side seam pockets and a faux drawstring. I used a woven that I got at @savers_thrift . I think it's something like a bonded linen - shiny on the wrong side and matte on the right side. They're kind of high waisted and loose, so perfect for summer ☀️

Let me tell you a funny story. When I was pregnant, I said “I am going to make myself some loungewear sets so I feel nice in those first six weeks around the house when baby arrives.” In my unchecked delusion, I totally forgot what having a newborn was really like, and I have spent the last six weeks mostly topless and wearing my oldest trackies that are hanging in by a thread. I was spewed, pooed and weed on simultaneously yesterday (by Jack, don’t worry) so I don’t want to wear the things I made to wear for this exact purpose….typical. 😅 So, while Jack is having his 9 minute sleep, here is a picture for all my dear sewing friends! All done in plenty of time for #sewnwithbig5aug And the sun has come out ☀️ The #b6924 shirt went smoothly (but despite my best efforts the pockets aren’t level 🤫). I was mildly worried that I’d essentially made pyjamas but I think they fall the right side of that. They are very floaty and will be great if hot weather comes this way again. The only alterations I made were to add 1/2” to the back rise on the trousers (size 14) and hemming them an inch shorter. I sized down on the shirt (to a 10) rather than making any alterations. Everything fits as I wanted but I think I’d add a little more to the rise all round if I were to make the trousers #s8389 again. #butterickpatterns #simplicitypatterns #sewover40 #ukteacherswhosew #janomemakes

I’m starting on a new project using Simplicity 8389, Butterick 6924 and some amazing viscose fabric. I have 3m of the fabric which I don’t think is enough for my initial vision of a Christine Redfern-esque long sleeve, long trouser affair (I’ve recently re-read Evil Under the Sun). I’m going for cropped trousers and a short sleeve shirt which I think will be less overwhelming! I’ll decide on pockets when I see what I’ve got left. I’m pretty sure the finished waist measurements on the Butterick pattern are wrong (maybe 10” out) and after a bit of deliberation I’m just going with a straight size 10. About the only pattern alteration they don’t talk you through is for narrow shoulders (my favourite 😭) probably because it’s too tricky with the way the yoke is, so I decided it was a sign not to over complicate things. I’m hoping a 14 in the trousers will work 🤞🏻. The question is will I get this done before summer is over? #b6924 #s8389 #butterickpatterns #simplicitypatterns #sewover40

“A perfect collar every time” - bold claims Helen! We shall see… Attaching the collar is the next step, I’ve finished the #s8389 trousers and have the body of the shirt done. The pockets are still just basted on. I don’t have a great track record of attaching them straight so I figured I’d wait until I could see what it looked like on before committing. Handmade outfit! The shorts are Simplicity 8389 #s8389 and the top is New Look 6511 #n6511. Both fabrics are a mystery to me as I bought them a looong time ago and I'm happy to finally use them! The bird fabric might be a viscose crepe but it has some stretch, which was a challenge to work with. I previously tried making a Burda top that did not work out, so I eeked this simple cap sleeve top out of the remaining fabric. I cut a size 12 in the top and lengthened the hem a few inches. The shorts fabric is a moderately thick and drapey rayon of some sort and it has a suede-like texture. I cut the shorts in a size 10 and they fit well in the waist, but I definitely have to shimmy into them! I got all my pieces cut out (including pockets) with hardly any length to spare! I’ve started with the trousers #s8389 as I think they’ll be reasonably quick to make. I was a bit confused by the pleat instructions as they don’t match the sample on the envelope (pics 2 and 3) so I’ve gone my own way with that. Also the notches for the pockets don’t match (pic 4). Minor issues and to be honest I’m always a tiny bit disappointed if I don’t spot any mistakes in a @simplicity_creative_group pattern 😂 I’ve been using my quilting table to help with the fluid fabric - it keeps it nice and flat #janomemakes #simplicitypatterns #sewover40 #ukteacherswhosew
