I noticed this fabric when Stephanie and I were shopping for her shirt. I let it be, but returned to buy a few metres when I was still thinking of it a couple of months later. It's a big, bold print that I think suits a simple design so I made another #s1609, this time with the bow variation. (I didn't think I was the bow type, but I'm enjoying it so far and it'll be easy to remove if I change my mind.) I smoothed over the centre-front seam to preserve the pattern, added in-seam pockets and attempted another invisible zip (not invisible, but nice and neat). This dress is an OK but not brilliant fit, nevertheless I think it's fun and I hope to get plenty of wear out of it.

James Gunn is three for three making me cry at these movies. As planned, I wore my new upcycled dress to opening night of Guardians 3. This being the last movie of the Guardians' series is definitely a little bittersweet for me. They're the first (and honestly really only) Marvel superhero team I latched on to. And one of the first movie franchises I got to really follow from beginning to end. A bunch of misfits who found each other to do good just resonates with me, these are low key the movies that defined my twenties. 🤣 Just thinking about how much has happened in my life from the first one til now definitely made it more sentimental for me. I cut and sewed this dress during my 3 day weekend this past weekend. I bought the exterior fabric from @paronfabrics (RIP) the day after @patternreview day in Nov 2014 (this was during a time where I actually labeled my fabrics). So almost 10 years later and I have now sewn this fabric up. When I first bought the fabric I felt like I needed just the right pattern for it but never quite found it . The fabric is very synthetic, somewhat thick, and a little stretchy but I really liked the texture of it. I decided to sew it up using the copy of a RTW dress (same as that peach dress I last posted, but without the middle band). Somehow the armholes are a little more cut in than I anticipated on this version. I'm wearing it with an elastic belt I made myself. The collar is from #s1609 and it wants to stick straight up and deft gravity so I tacked it down front and back, while leaving it loose on the sides of the collar so I can wear it with a shrug and tuck the shrug underneath the collar. This time I lined the dress in black silk stretch charmeuse from stash, and drafted facings with exterior fabric to make it a little more luxe on the inside. Is there a name for doing that? I don't know. As usual it took way longer than I anticipated but since I took Monday off I felt like I had the time and space for it. Also this is day 4 hair and it doesn't look too bad. I am tempted to undo the hem and roll hem the edge on my serger but also, maybe I'll just let it be. #paronfabricsnyc #paronfabrics

I sewed a #s1609 out of a Darwin-purchased fabric just in time for the wedding! It's a very simple style, but some long side darts meant that resizing the pattern took a couple of goes. Other adjustments: full cotton poplin lining, first use of my invisible zipper foot, and I snuck in some in-seam pockets. Thankful for youtube sewing tutorials, proud of my pattern matching.

The mommy-and-me Christmas dresses are finished!! 🎄 I bought this amazing fabric (Alexander Henry "Merry Main Street") after Christmas last year knowing that I wanted to make something 1960's inspired for my daughter and I to wear for this year. I used Simplicity pattern #s1609 for my dress and then drafted my own pattern for the mini version. I'm actually really impressed with how well this pattern fits and flatters an hourglass shape - no adjustments or additional darts needed! Hello friends! I have been sewing up a storm the last few weeks, and have so much to share, but first I am finally sharing some proper photos and pattern details for my #Barbie dress 🎀 (she deserves it 💗). Turns out I am better at sewing than I am at posting… For this dress I leaned into the retro barbie vibes (swipe to see my Barbie inspo), and chose a vintage 60’s shift dress pattern from @simplicity_creative_group (#s1609 – view A). I had this candy pink psychedelic viscose poplin from @blackbirdfabrics in my stash, and I knew it was a match made in #Barbieland. With 2 main dress pattern pieces, this shift dress has a fairly simple construction that is elevated by 4 sets of darts, creating a beautifully tailored silhouette. The dress has such a great shape on its own, but after I sewed on that pink scalloped collar, I knew it wouldn’t be complete without a matching pink belt. To finish it off, I chose some fun orange flower buttons to pick up the orange in the fabric. I did have to make a couple of modifications to tailor this pattern to me. I shortened the dress by 1 ¼ inches at the waistline to ensure the waistline hit my natural waist, and graded up two sizes between the waist and hip. I was nervous about grading sizes with the French darts on the front and double darts on the back, so I made up a quick muslin to be safe, and I was happily surprised when it worked out on the first try. I had so much fun dreaming up this over-the-top Barbie dress, and I think it turned out pretty fabulous. Another 1960's inspired make of #simplicity1609 finished...almost! I have to make some adjustments to the fit (I'm admittedly still trying to figure it out for this pattern), but it just looks so pretty, I had to post it. It's another #upcycleproject made from one of the vintage sheet sets from my collection. I think they're from the 1960's -70's era and in great shape! 🪡 TATB STEVIE 🪡 I wanted to make a versatile #LBD that I could dress/layer up or down. It's a bit more lightweight than I imagined for A/W but I love the print. I realised when attaching the facing that it would look great with a white contrast collar (@iam_patterns venus or for something with a vintage twist #S9082 #S1609). I *loathe* turning straps but I was surprised to find using a chopstick worked here. I did start to try to pattern match the yoke but made a mistake although I don't think it matters with this fabric. I like the topstitching details. I also had just enough with 1.5m to add (#sewingindigo) pockets. But there were issues. It's the first time I've ever had skipped stitching - changing from a 90 needle to 75 helped. Also, the instructions say to snip into the underarm curve but @schoolofsew explained that would create a weakness and I should have just overlocked close to the stitch line. The fabric does that thing when it catches on your tights. I made a size 3. I thought I'd like the boxiness of Stevie but for some reason it just feels a bit shapeless - compared to another tunic dress I like it looks like that is more fitted (and also the more structured fabric might help). Do I have the patience to unpick it all and make it smaller? Or cut it into a top that I might wear more... either way I want to redo the underarms so it lasts. That time @iconokat was all GIVE ME DELIA*S CATALOG and I was like GIRL, I WAS BORN TO GIVE DELIA*S CATALOG and boom bam pow-pow, here are the end results / the photos I will unleash upon Teh Apps if ever I get the hankering to date again. (LOL? LOL indeed.) Anywho: If you saw my stories earlier in the week, you’ll know that this dress started life as a tablecloth and was stitched together the day before I headed to my folks’ for the holidays, because I didn’t have enough to do, duh. Final Thoughts: I love it, I adore it, I need to remove about two inches of fabric from the back neck (see last photo for excess), but she is otherwise perfect and I can’t wait to make her again from a not-tablecloth, maybe a curtain or a bedsheet, because ✨luxury✨. Pattern: #simplicity #s1609 - a reissue of a pattern from the 1960s, no surprise Mods / Sizing: My measurements matched Size 12 to the inch, but the end result was so tight that I couldn’t sit down and y’all, I do love a proper sit. I unpicked the side and back seams and restitched at a 3/8” SA (versus 5/8”) which allowed more room for sitting / breathing. Other sewists may want to consider sizing up. Fabric: A thrift store tablecloth from Ma in a somewhat rugged cotton that suits this vintage pattern well - thanks, Ma! Sleep Deprivation: Yes. Always. One hot pink 1960s inspired mini dress for me and one for my mini-me! 🩷 These were so fun to make! I used Simplicity pattern #s1609 as a starting point, but basically changed every detail except for the darts haha - I made the neckline narrower, drafted a sharply pointed collar, made the skirt flare out more, and chopped it way shorter.
