I asked my son to model the suit I finished last week so that I could at least record it in my IG sewing history. My #dcfrocktails2020 tuxedo pants ✨ The best part of these pants is the lining, and fortunately no one saw it at the event 😂 Most people didn’t notice the sequined contrast bands until I pointed them out 🔎 To be fair there was a lot going on in this look 👀 . . I used #V9097 for a classic tuxedo pant. Given the time crunch, and the likelihood I’ll actually only wear these only a handful of times, I didn’t make a muslin to test fit and went straight off of pattern measurements 😬 It worked, but they’re a little bit and roomier than I like, but better than too small 🤷‍♂️ This was an intricate Vogue pattern so I didn’t make any mods. They’re made from silver satin, fully underlined with cotton muslin and partially lined with @riflepaperco rayon lawn (so comfy!). I bound all my seams in the lining fabric as well 🥳 . . Everything was easy to cut, even the sequins, with my trusty @olfacreates rotary cutter and large cutting mats (2x 36x24 mats = enough space for cutting out pants✂️👖✨) This was also the first full garment I made on my new @janomeamerica HD9 as a Janome Maker, and it handled all the bulk with ease! And I used my default @aurifilthread Forty3 which is perfect for high speed machines like mine. . . The hardest part was turning the belt carriers. In the end I had to use some fusible interfacing to get it to work. I finished the front and back pockets with silver snaps to keep things simple. . . I wore it with a coordinating sequined blazer and a Liberty button up. Proud to have made this blazer for drag king Johnny Sin-Rose Gentleman (@johnnygentleman_drag ) for his finalist performance in The Antidote competition hosted by the amazing @samarasinofficial. I adore the cut of this blazer. It creates an optical illusion of angles where there are curves— but also includes curved darts that work as masculine princess seams. Blazer is fully lined with welted pockets and a tuxedo collar. Congrats on placing third Johnny! Swipe for progress pics. Used Vogue #v9097 as springboard.

My husband is an impeccable dresser. I admire how he enjoys playing around with sartorial choices and has the confidence to pull it all off too. He had been looking online for a blood-themed blazer (relevant to his industry) for a long time, so I finally offered to collaborate with him on a project. He picked the fabric, I did everything else 😂 ▪️ The fabric choice was nothing shy of a nightmare for this project. It was a beautiful satin with a lovely drape and therefore all wrong for this tuxedo jacket (I did try to talk him out of it but he insisted on something shiny). I had to interface the heck out of it and still it lacked the structure it so sorely needed, plus had all the telltale signs of being interfaced. ▪️ The construction of the blazer itself (Vogue #V9097) wasn’t too complex, though some parts had me scratching my head and ultimately I just did things the way I’m used to. I did a regular buttonhole instead of a bound one for the front closure, as I wasn’t too confident in my skills to execute it flawlessly. The only other modification I did was lengthen the torso by 1.5”, as he is quite tall. ▪️ This was a real buzzer-beater, hand-sewing the last of the details as he was packing for his annual sales meeting. While I wasn’t thrilled with how it turned out, he got countless compliments on it (and a final surprise as seen in the last photo). It took a month... but I did it!!! Five weekends, two books, two online courses, plenty of unpicking, hours of pressing and steaming, three types of interfacing, evenings spent hand stitching, but it's done now. A trial run of my son's prom jacket which may never see the outside world because already it feels slightly tight in the shoulders and chest. But it was worth it... And if the prom does happen after all, I know what to do now, I just need looooots of time in advance. I know other sewists dedicate their time to making masks, handbands and scrub caps for doctors and nurses, and during these last few weeks I felt bad working on a useless jacket, even though I kept telling myself that I am doing my part in other ways. I've made donations, I've supported local businesses, I am working full time in the job that is considered an essential service. So am I allowed to do what I like to do and enjoy the process without feeling guilty? I guess this is the dilemma I will have to figure out for myself but if there are other sewists out there who feel confused and pressurized right now my message would be: let's keep this new and strange world as enjoyable and normal as possible for ourselves and people who are close to us, and if making masks make you feel better and in control, go for it, but if you feel an urgent desire to make a new party dress or a frocktails outfit, you should do just that and that party will happen very very soon!!! #canadasews #ottawasews #sewingformen #sewingmenswear #voguepatterns #v9097 #slowsewing

Do you ever dream about a dress or some other garment you just have to have? I do. I've wanted a creamy white linen shirtdress for ages now and, boy oh boy, did I ever have a time making it. Believe it or not, there's a mistake on the pattern that had to be corrected (very unusual for a Vogue pattern), then I messed myself up with an interfacing disaster (never buy cheap interfacing--I don't know what the hell got into me), and I feel like I used my seam ripper more on this project than I ever have, ever. So happy to have made this adorable Vogue 9097 hat pattern from 1957. And I made it reversible - oh yeah! Pattern matching all the strips was sooooo rewarding. Despite very low motivation, full time job in these weird conditions, constant stress, not to mention uselessness of this whole project, I still persevere with this tailored suit for my son which was supposed to be a trial run before an actual prom suit. Who knows whether the prom is going to happen or when, and by the time life is back to normal this suit will definitely be too small. Nevertherless, I carry on. The process has a gazillion steps and the Vogue instructions are very vague and sparse, and in some cases simply ridiculous. So thank goodness for the #jasikablazer online course by @closetcase.patterns, without it I would be lost. I also often refer to Tailoring book by Singer Sewing I got as a gift from @shespokeclothing. Such a great resourse. Thank you, Anokhee! The bound button hole, double vented pockets, the top single vent pocket, and the sleeves are done. It is a shawl colar so should be easier than nothced. And then it's just the lining. Not sure how to get the right buttons. I don't trust myself to be able to match the colour online. But maybe I could use black ones. Besides, I might not need the buttons. As I said, it might be too small by the time it has a chance to be worn. But let's stay positive. ...
