Happy sewing Sunday! Spring is in full bloom here now and some more summer-like temps have descended. When I took these pics two weeks ago the weather was decidedly more wintery (hence the Ugg boots in early may!). I wore my last #blackwoodcardigan by @helenscloset so much that I decided I definitely needed another for spring. This version is made from a glorious off white wool/viscose blend from @voguefabrics. I made this cardigan a month ago and have worn it countless times since and felt instantly glamorous. As soon as I saw this I got major 70s vibes and fell totally in love. This fabric was so wonderful to work with. It’s super lightweight and perfect for summer but has enough structure and body that it‘s incredibly easy to cut and sew—not slippy at all!!🤍🤗 I’m honestly going to have to resist making one of these coords in every color star print because I’m lowkey obsessed💖 I couldn’t decide what pattern to use so I just used them all!!! TGIF everyone! Of course for teachers in the summer every day is Friday but don’t hate me for that! Today I am throwing it back to a number of years ago when I made this amazing #v9315 wrap top after seeing many many versions by other sewists online. I loved this top so much I made another one without really checking the fit closely of this first one. As such, it never fit quite right. I had added an inch to the neckline in hopes of wearing it without something underneath (still not gonna happen!!) and I think that messed with the neckline circumference such that it always gaped at the neck and fell off my shoulders. I have this issue with lots of wrap tops- especially those without stretch. I have had it sitting in my closet largely unworn for several years because of this fit issue. I pulled it out the other day and decided to fix it. I took apart the section where the ties meet the top and cut out a wedge that was 1.5 inches at the top grading to nothing at the end of the tie. It fits so much better now!!!! Phew! Sometimes I dread spending precious sewing time fixing things that don’t work in previous garments, but this was definitely worth it so I will have to do more of that moving forward. Wearing my #v9315 for the first time. Love the colour and fabric (a linen/cotton blend) but unfortunately it's a little too risqué for work. 😯 Sewing the front wrap pieces to the back happened very early on in the process, so almost from the start I knew that it might not have enough 'coverage.' 😳 That prompted a brief, existential sewing crisis (can existential crises be brief?) where I wondered why I bothered to sew fitted garments because they never fit!! 😬 But I kept sewing because I loved the fabric and am ever-hopeful and took in a very narrow seam on the front wraps and in the end, the fit was better than I had feared. How is Me Made May going for you? Zoe @sozoblog started it as a wardrobe challenge to get more wear out of her memades...new combinations, repairs, alterations, or spotting a gap. We are sharing how some in our community are responding to the challenge, and what they have learned....so far. . 1. @velvetmango_sews took in the side seams and shortened the hem of her #fendress @fancytigercrafts . Now she loves it. 2. @sepatterns has been rooting through her 70s wardrobe, which had been stored in her attic. Trying on and wearing each piece has helped her to make decisions. She has found new ways to wear this top. The skirt will become fabric for another garment (it's Liberty Tana Lawn!) 3. @adymadie mentioned that her #yorkpinafore @helens__closet was too short. It was suggested she could wear it over jeans...and here she is... jumping for joy. 4. @frau_crafteln was unsure about joining in Me Made May but after listening to @checkyourthread podcast and then discovering the #memademayfat hashtag she is definitely in. 5. @quantumsewist made a #MeMadeMay22 pledge to make an office outfit from thrifted sources and here it is. A #patinablouse @fridaypatterncompany made from a refashioned men's shirt. 6. @an_upcycled_life pledge has helped her find a new way to wear this #V9315 top. It was impractical as it was too low at the neck, too short in length, and the bow was fiddly. It's definitely a keeper worn this way. 7. @2ducks_swimming discovered she doesn't have to wear 'walking clothes' to go her daily walk as long as she wears trainers. She is assessing her wardrobe piece by piece. 8. @sosewshaw . Day 12 brought a 3rd alteration. Her #florenceskirt by @sizemesewing was too big. She has now taken it in at the waist and is road testing it. 9. @pkaysews is playing Pros and Cons with each piece in her wardrobe. It's proving a really excellent informative learning process. 10. @heathmaggy is wearing a five year old dress. I made another pair of #m7726 but whatever. Can we spend a minute taking about aging? There’s so many huge differences between your 30s and 40s. First of all, you magically give zero f&@$* what people think, but also along with your ability to care about people’s opinions, your metabolism also leaves the building. It’s like they ran away together. Let’s ask the obvious question, how much weight did I gain in my chest!!!! These pictures are 4 years apart 😂 this is vogue top #v9315 a fun make. It fits a bit differently now. What am I trying to say? Even with working out and eating well, bodies change as you age. Don’t dwell on that old body you don’t have anymore and won’t have again. Embrace the one that apparently nature had in mind.

When I first made this top, it was from a paper pattern #V9315 I loved how it looked and got so many compliments on it, however, something about it still bothered me and so I did not wear it much (Scroll for the initial top) The shoulders were dropped, the torso was short and the neckline was loose, I believe there was no pinching done to the pattern draft, so I had to pin it in place to hold it together! Fast forward 3 years later I decided to draft it myself because I really liked the look and so I corrected what I did not like… let me say PERFECTION ❤️! And because drafting is some work, I have so far made 5 tops from the same draft, because I love it so much, you will be seeing all those tops, and I’ll definitely use this same caption lol 😆 because I’m lazy! . Happy sewing Sunday! Spring is finally springing here and the temps this week are supposed to be in the 70s (after highs of 50s forever it seems!). As such I have still been finishing up some more wintery patterns before I shift into summer sewing. This top is my third mashup of #v9315 and #v9205. I use the ties from the first pattern and then the body and sleeves of the second. I find they are in regular rotation in my wardrobe and I always get compliments when I wear them. This version is made from a super soft knit from @voguefabrics. I bought the fabric this fall but then never made anything with it. The lightweight knits aren’t super useful in the Chicago climate, but when it is 40-50 degrees outside they are the perfect weight! I have been doing a bunch of fixing (had to fix the drape on my recent shacket which requires ripping the whole thing apart unfortunately) and altering old makes that just aren’t quite right. This and finishing up another school year have made for less time for posting fabulous things. I hope to get back to it soon! Ok so literally this is one of the most challenging outfits that I have made. Ok after thinking about what I have made thus far this is in the top three. I love the wrap top and wide leg pants. Normally wrap tops just don’t lay well on me, but I made some adjustments to the neckline so that I could be more comfortable wearing it. I absolutely love this fabric and yellow is my favorite color to wear. This fabric was so pretty that I was super motivated to do a challenging outfit. I really like the texture of the linen. Skills learned: -Putting in the side zipper in a side invisible zipper the pretty way 😆 -Fitting woven pants to my figure -Adjusting the wrap shirt so that it was not as low cut Things I noticed after the first wear: -Linen stretches throughout the day. Me Made May 8: #v9315 If it wasn't for my #memademay2022 pledge, I don't think I would have worn this top. It is so impractical - the neckline is too low, the top is so short and it is such a faff to get the bow sitting right. And I thought the top was one of those wardrobe orphans. 😬 But ... I love the colour and print of the fabric, I love those sleeves and I actually love that bow feature, faff and all. And my #memademay pledge forced me to find a way to make the top work and I'm pleased that it did. I don't think it is going to be a 'wear it all the time' kind of garment, but it's definitely a keeper.
