I am in love with this monochromatic look 💙💙💙. I am getting a lot better at making separates which make me sooo happy. When I think of garments to make now my mind thinks in whole outfits which is totally new. The pants are high waisted enough to cover my belly button. This is big because I have a long torso because I am tall. It’s difficult to find high waisted pants long enough. I increased the rise of the crotch by 2.5. I love the crop top details. The zipper is my fave. My plan is to make a more detailed post about it. This is my second time making the wrap top. There is elastic around the entire neckline to help with the stability. Oh yea!! This blue rib fabric has been a dream to work with. It’s my first time working with rib knit and I definitely want to make more garments with it. I think this is a 10 oz weight which has a really nice thickness. 2024 Project Number 8: Brocade Crop Top & Skirt This is my westernized/simplified take on a lehenga - made for a friends Indian/western hybrid wedding in October 2024! Once again, I opted for a simple pattern and shape, with a fabric that would really stand out. I saw this GORGEOUS #brocadefabric on #etsy, in a modern peacock feather print, and immediately fell in love. The bride and groom asked for bright colors, and I was worried this wouldn’t be “bright” enough (lol in hindsight). I kinda wish I had taken this opportunity to make something in the brightest fuschia I could find, but once I saw this fabric, that was it! The bottom is a half circle skirt, and the top is #mccalls7958 in view B. Circle skirts are like my sewing security blanket, I can whip one up in an afternoon if I need to! And the top was incredibly easy. I cut a size 8 with a B bust, and needed very few adjustments. I leaned on my serger a lot for this one. Without serged edges, this fabric would have been tricky. I completed the outfit with a storebought dupatta scarf and tons of gold bangels and accessories! I got SO many compliments, and I felt great! Do you really wanna know where I was April 29? I was in the airport on the way to Atlanta to see Taylor Swift! After battling with Ticketmaster for 5 hours and coming out victorious with 3 tickets to the Sunday Atlanta show, the next thing on my mind was deciding what to make - it seemed like anyone who owned a sewing machine was obligated to make at least a piece of their Eras outfit. After waffling a bit between Red inspired sailor shorts, the Me! tulle skirt, and the Anti-Hero tshirt dress I discovered this tulle and decided to go with a midnights inspired matching set. And since this show was already an expensive endeavor between tickets and flights, I tried my best to use what I had on hand which was mostly successful - I only purchased the tulle and the skirt zipper. Everything else (cotton, patterns, hook and eye, separating zipper, thread, labels, interfacing) was already in my stash. I’ve made the McCalls #m8051 #mariemccalls three times now, and other than sizing down one from my previous makes the construction was fairly simple. It wasn’t until after I finished the whole set and was deciding on shoes that I realized - the tulle layer was wrong side out! Maybe one day I’ll fix it, but since no one was looking that closely and I was short on time I let it be. The top was a whole different matter. I did make a muslin for #m7958 as I wanted to be sure of fit and was concerned about the 16/18D being too tight on my chest, so I cut the 20/22D. It was falling off my body! Even subbing the back panels for a 16/18 resulted in a top that was much too large. So I had to recut everything to be a size smaller which was fine and ended up fitting okay, but resulted in a good bit of wasted fabric. I think I could have gotten the entire outfit out of 2 yards (1 for top, 1 for bottom) if not for the wastage from sizing down. After a long garment sewing drought, I made this high waisted linen shorts set for casual Christmas events. Two of which were cancelled due to that big black cloud over the world that just won't go away! . I decided I needed a black linen pair of @megannielsenpatterns #mnflint shorts . I then searched high and low for a cropped top pattern to match. Not showing tooooo much skin. I settled on the #mccalls7958 top. . I'm very happy with the result although it wasn't the quick project overall I thought it would be. The Flint shorts were perfectly straightforward as usual. Cannot fault that pattern! I used my previously drafted curved waistband piece and sewed it with a smaller seam allowance than usual, to make the waistband a touch higher. The button option means fitting is flexible, as you can use the button placement to adjust the waist fit. . The McCall's bralette top was easy to sew, but not awesome to fit. I made the correct size for my measurements, but it ended up way too big. I also had to go back and shape each side seam at the top as it was flaring out. The result is good I think... but it was a lot of futzing around! Sewing, trying on, re-sewing.... I did also lengthen by maybe an inch? . The fabric is really high quality black linen from @lincraft. Luckily, I bought this on a weekend where they had a big sale. . ✨ Details for the sewists ✨ Thanks for all the love on this up-cycled number! I haven’t heard back from @mark_mcgowan_mp, but if I do get back to #fremantle I promise to wear this on the plane 😌 🧵 Pattern I used a simple, box shirt pattern I’d found years ago in an op shop. The number is #mccalls #m7958. I slashed the back to add a yoke, and trimmed the hem So it became a cropped version. 🧵 Fabric The hardest part was placing the prints from the flour bags, skimming areas too torn or damaged, and saving as much of the colour as possible. I ended up needing two flour bags I’d found on eBay, and one small tablecloth from another op shop. The buttons were hand me downs from my aunt :) 🧵 Finishes To preserve the scalloped edge for the centre-front, I interfaced a slither of stay tape under each button hole before sewing. It’s near invisible from the inside, but gave the thin cotton much needed stability. The collar was a similar process. To keep the scalloped edge here I hid a lining of the same cotton material inside, folding in the edges and top-stitching (see images). It means there’s a visible line from the upper - but I don’t think it takes away too much. I have a few more of these bags from different companies. Going to have a play in my stash to see what else I could make! The last image is of my favourite, “Woofs for dogs” 😂. Well this is a definite win for my daughter and who doesn't love a coordinating set? ⠀ I bought the @simplicitymccallsuk #M7958 pattern in a new year sale earlier this year as I thought it would be perfect for my daughter for summer. This pattern comes up pretty much true to size. The only alteration that I made was to alter the back panel so that it had a shirred panel in the middle so that we could omit the zip fastening. I'm really pleased with the fit of this top and it was just what my daughter was looking for. ⠀ ⠀ The skirt originally started off as the #AnnieALineSkirt from @sewthispattern which is a #FreePattern. I moved the zip to the side and hacked the front so that it was now two pieces so I could add the front split. I also graded the side seams in so it was less of an A-line shape. It worked out really well and it's such a cute coordinating set. Sleeves so big, I cant even fit one in the picture 😍 . I made #m7958 with mods (listed below) for my SIL. We were inspired by an Oscar de la Renta crop top with massive puff sleeves. I am so happy with how this came out that I’m thinking I need one of these in my closet too! . When you make the cutest little top/bralette, get to the fitting stage (hence the pins in the straps) and realise it’s far too big (the perils of having very little boobage)! Lots of adjustments are going to be needed for this one. The back fastening is meant to be a zip but I’ve changed it to buttons because I think they’re much cuter than a zip. This calls for a separating zipper, and I stupidly used a regular zipper, but it actually fits fine and I probably won’t change it out. It’s a pretty good summer top pattern.
