Dinosaurs! 🦕 🦖
Even though I primarily sew clothing for myself, I made these stuffed animals for my youngest son's 6th birthday. I'm so pleased with how they turned out! He has loved dinosaurs for years, and I couldn't resist when I saw the pattern S9585 by @simplicity_creative_group
Top tips for making these:
📍Since I was making more than one, I bought just half a yard each in 5 colors - much less than the pattern called for if I was making them individually and I still have probably half of what I bought left over.
📍Because the minky fabric is slippery and I wanted to be really accurate, I photocopied my pattern pieces (for durability), traced them on to the wrong side of the fabric using Crayola washable markers, and cut in a single layer. This worked really well.
📍A walking foot is a must-have! Wonder clips were also really helpful rather than pins due to the thickness of the fabric.
📍 It's best to sew any seams near the safety eyes before attaching the safety eyes. The time I didn't do this was difficult! Sometimes the pattern calls for it first and sometimes it doesn't.
📍Hand basting is your friend! I used hand basting for marking the right side of the fabric and in place of pinning for tricky seams. I also hand sewed the head onto the body for the triceratops and pterodactyl because I couldn't maneuver that small opening under my sewing machine foot.
📍Align the middle (not the edges) of the stegosaurus plates with the curved edge of the fabric - I didn't do this and had to try 3x to catch all the plates in that seam.
📍I couldn't roll the pterodactyl wings up to fit inside the body when sewing the body together - instead I stuck the ends out the opening in the center back seam and this was flatter and easier for sewing the side seams.
📍I would rate the difficulty, easiest to hardest, as apatosaurus, T-Rex, stegosaurus, pterodactyl, triceratops.
