I’ve been MIA for a few weeks because I’ve been sewing up this trench coat for the spring weather we are slowly entering into! I made a trench coat! I’ve wanted to for quite awhile. I had quite the time sourcing proper fabric for it and the one I did get is a bit on the stiff side. It’s not lined so that helps. I added about 4”of length to hem and sleeves as I’m 5’9”tall. I need to raise the belt loops a few inches as they are too low for my taste. This coat has most definitely been a slow sewing project.  I started it about three weeks ago. The pattern is Simplicity 8554, which is an unlined coat in varying lengths.  I had hoped to make view A, the long duster style version, but unfortunately, I didn't have enough fabric. I settled for View B,  mid length , with the front flaps.  Size 14, based on my measurements. Because it was unlined, and the fabric frayed easily, I bound all the seams with bias binding .  The underside of the collar and flaps is a scrap of printed voile from the stash. In a rather risqué move,  I omitted the pockets , I felt they would just flop and not sit nicely, and I'm pretty much just going to wear it with jeans anyway. I also sewed up the side slit . Belt instructions in the pattern are wrong, but it's easy enough to work out what you need to do. I'm probably not going to wear it done up too often, I'm worried it'll give off dressing gown vibes😂 looking forward to wearing this as a transeasonal layering piece. Not looking forward to the ironing it seems to require. Fabric is a deep raspberry linen eucalyptus blend(impossible to photograph accurately)gifted to me by @frommystudio. This is the first time I’m cutting fabric in over six weeks. I definitely had itchy fingers and I know you were waiting to see what I’m making next. The weather is so changeable and I’ve chosen to make Simplicity 8554 option B in this Minerva Core Range Riveria Water Resistant Coating fabric - colour way ochre. It’s an unlined jacket but I have decided to make a lining and I found a cute paisley jacquard fabric that I’m going to use (I will tell the you story of how it turned my towels blue another time🥴 l). To start with, I changed the blade in my rotary cutter which makes it so easy to cut the fabric. It’s time to wrap up!!😉 I wanted a jacket for autumn which was medium weight & casual #s8554 was a nice easy pattern with options. Does this coat need a button in front? 🧥 I love all the dreamy Easter dresses, but Easter morning in real life means waking up at 0-dark-hundred and driving to @the_flower_fields for our church’s sunrise service. Helping with sunrise services is one of my favorite memories from growing up, and I can’t wait to take our kids this year. If you’re in North County, you should totally join us! All that to say, it’s a little nippy at 6:30am, so I made this wool cocoon coat to stay cozy. This 100% boiled wool from @gkfashionfabrics is so warm and surprisingly easy to work with. I used #s8554 but simplified the construction because the wool didn’t really need a facing. I’m just trying to decide now if it needs a button closure in front or if I should leave it alone. What do you think? Button? Or no button?

Simplicity 8554 (aka D0899) is a trench style coat I’ve seen often on IG made with many different fabrics. But I never noticed one made of faux suede so I thought I’d give it a try and join the #sewtogetherforwinter coat challenge brought to us by @Sewing_in_Spain, @SewSarahSmith, and @Crafting_Slovak. I learned a lot with this project but I definitely think it was worth the extra effort. Since it’s an easy wrap style with no closures to worry about, no gathers, and minimal seams, it was a straightforward make. In addition, I decided to line the coat, make my own shoulder pads and sleeve heads, upgrade the side-seam pockets, and add just a touch of decorative stitching. The faux suede was a gift from my Dad and the silk lining was thrifted long ago. I made the size 12. These tips were helpful to me: ☑️Needles & pins often leave holes in the fabric so be sure to plan ahead and sew slowly so you don’t have to take out any seams. ☑️Do any basting just inside the seam allowance so any holes won’t show later. ☑️Use clips rather than pins to hold the seams together as you sew. ☑️Use a leather needle in the machine. You’ll be glad you did! ☑️If you have a Teflon coated foot, use it. If not, a walking foot is very useful to keep the layers from shifting. ☑️As for bulk, a few seams end up with lots of layers, so grading them is really important. Especially around the neck. ☑️You’ll need to experiment first with scrap fabric to determine the best steam and/or iron temps to use, and you’ll definitely need a pressing cloth to protect your fabric from melting or taking on an unnatural shine or changing the way the nap looks.
