Before everything happened with Orion, I decided to treat myself for finishing the Monster Maroon by diving into Vogue 1669 and making a new winter coat...Cuz that's what you do when you finish a really complicated jacket, you make an even bigger and more complicated one! 🤪 Similarly to the MM, I'm using fabric from my stash for the lining, though technically it's from my mom's old stash. Purple silk, cut in varying lengths. No notes or ideas on what she wanted to use it for or why it was cut oddly, but I managed to eke out the amount required to line the coat. Day 15 and lookie!! It’s almost a coat! Ok, I’m not really wearing this today as it’s clearly not finished but I did spend a bit of time prancing around this morning. I have a couple more bits to do - I need to trim the collar and under stitch something, and I’ve yet to do the sleeve lining, but look!! 😍 contrast lapel/collar was such a good idea, and it’s just the WS of the coat fabric. I’m dressed like a tequila sunrise today, feeling a little frumpy as both the dress and the cardi are a bit big. But they’re comfy for another day home working. I made the perfect 1940’s winter coat! And I absolutely adore it… I used #v1669 and this incredible wool from @corefabrics. I even went out in the rain with it and I didn’t even get wet. It also dries exceedingly fast!! Wool proves to be much more than any synthetic fibers as I am toasty even on those drafty, cold November days!! Day 28 and I’ve finished my coat! I love love love the silhouette and the lines of this - it’s the perfect shape for me as it goes in and out where I go in and out 😍 So, firstly, the deets: Fabric - @minervadotcom reversible coating Pattern - #vogue1669 #v1669 Size - I measured on 24 Jan and I was bang on size 18 (40, 32, 42). No fitting mods have been done whatsoever. For ref, I’m 5’3 and I didn’t take off any length so this is probably meant to be shorter but I liked the drama! About the pattern - there are a lot of steps!!! This is quite possibly the most complicated thing I’ve made so far and I’ve learnt a lot of new techniques. I’ve also learnt I need to upgrade my sewing machine 😅 I mainly followed the pattern but there are probably a couple of bits where I didn’t do exactly as it said... one being the seam binding the raw edges at the hem (laziness) and I top stitched the edge of skirt fronts as no matter how much I pressed (and squashed with my casserole dish) the seams wouldn’t lie flat. Last night there was some drama - I’d received my 2 choices of buttons and decided on the vintage-y ones (the stories poll I did agreed with that decision too 😅). I practiced a couple of 1 step buttonholes in the required thickness with some scraps and they looked perfect. Then I proceeded to fuck it all up 😂 what I hadn’t taken into account was that there was a lump of fabric at the seam which the plastic buttonhole foot didn’t like. This meant a bit of pushing and pulling, and skipping stitches. The first one I did at the bottom was fine! The middle one less so and the top was fricking awful - it just kept going up and down the same side and not doing the L-R stitches to reinforce. I ended up giving up and trying to reinforce another way. Then, when it came time to open up the buttonholes, I stuck my pin in one end and used my seam ripper, and it jumped the pin and ripped a hole in my coat 😱😱 that’s where I full on started crying. Once I’d calmed down I did a bit of mending, going back and forth over the spot. I just couldn’t believe that I’d “ruined” it at the last hurdle. But it’s fine - it’s not perfect buts it’s mine and it’s one of a kind 😎 ID in comments

Let's do Madam VP and her look. First off I love this shade of royal Purple that she chose. There weren't any exact matches here either but again I think Butterick has the closest one and almost in an identical color in B6430. Also something to note that I haven't seen anyone else mention is that these buttons are on the opposite side that women's clothing typically has them on. Men's shirts, jackets, etc. Typically have buttons on the right like how her dress was made here. Letting the coat hang on the dressform tonight before hemming and finishing (also giving me time to find out if I have enough 1 1/8" buttons on hand TO finish the coat 😰) The outer shell came together very nicely. I'm using a wool/cashmere blend from @moodfabrics and it was remarkably easy to work with and feels quite warm. The instructions on the pattern were pretty clear and concise as well. De face 🐑 Vous êtes nombreuses à m'avoir dit que vous aviez ce patron aussi ... Alors ! Les + : un patron vraiment bien taillé (le buste est un peu long, attention à celles qui sont petites, je l'aurais raccourci si je savais comment faire 😇), les pièces tombent nickel (pas de décalages ou d'erreurs de cran comme parfois), pas de difficulté particulière au montage. Les - : explications pas toujours très claires (mais peut-être parce que je n'ai pas compris, ou parce que j'avais la traduction sur une feuille à part ... Pas pratique), un montage pas ordinaire (surtout pour la doublure, corps monté indépendamment des manches qui sont montées à la main sur les marges de couture), finition doublure incompréhensible (pour moi). Un patron qui demande beaucoup de temps (si vous n'êtes pas très rapide) mais le rendu est nickel il faut bien l'avouer !) #v1669 #voguepatterns 1950 Vintage Coat: after 4 months of working on this #vintagepatten I can finally say I'm done! Like every project, I learned a lot. There were some tricky pivots. This make is for my my best friend. She picked the fabrics and pattern. Size 8 at the top and graded to 10 at hip. Reduced length by 6 inches, she is 5'5" and has nice calves so I wanted to show more legs, plus it'll pair nicely with some knee high boots. think I need one for myself in red...but in wool crepe, because it would definitely drape better @mccallpatterncompany

BEFORE left & AFTER right: Setting in the sleeve. Before - double row stitch, gathered, and stitched the sleeve head into armhole. After - taking the extra steps to carefully trim seam allowance, press seam towards sleeve, set sleeve into sleeve board, steam and then dry press sleeve head to shape and form. I used to hate setting sleeves, but now, its almost magical. Especially when working with 100% wool where it will mold! #diysewing #slowsew #vintagepatten #v1669

(Re-uploaded due to black screen of death 😵) Day 7 and I’m not even going to pretend I’ve got out of my PJ’s 😅 so here’s some progress on my coat. I’m up to step 47 and about to start on the lining! The sleeves are in and the shoulder pads are in place 😬 I feel like an 80’s throwback but it has a brilliant silhouette. The pockets still aren’t right but I’ve managed to get rid of the hole I had last time (there’s a lot of layers but you do need to go right up to the marking!). I’m going to research sleeve heads and shoulder pad placements, and I can have a look next weekend if I’m not keen on the shoulder pads as they are now. This is such a good project to get my teeth into, I’ve not had a multi-weekend project before! I’m working my way through some #coatsewing at the moment as I make this #v1669 - a pattern originally from 1949! I have had mixed experiences with sewing coats. I generally enjoy the process a lot but often find that little imperfections result in me reaching for me-made coats less than RTW ones. I’m hoping that the very classic design of this one won’t lead it to the same fate. This double faced wool from @wearethefabricstore is a lovely squishy forgiving dream to work with (it’s also 50% off in their flash sale this week - I contemplated buying it in another colour before I realised I couldn’t justify it!). I’ve made a start on my coat this weekend! I managed to do all the cutting out and I’m up to step 22 (out of 70 😱). I’ve done the back bodice darts and skirt pleat, the pockets (oh the pockets!) and the front/side skirts. I’m pressing as much as possible but everything is a little bouncy. Using my heavy casserole dish after ironing to try keep them down. I had a little trouble with the reinforcing stitching, which has frayed on one of the sides. But this is a wearable toile, so I’m hoping I can fix it next time (double line of stitching, or a bias square). I’m hoping the pockets get a bit better once the rest of the sewing is done as they look a bit strange at the mo. Turns out I only had 2 buttons in my stash that were the correct size and I needed 3, so...I had to buy more buttons after all. 😅 Isn't that usually how it goes though?
