Before diving into the final version, I made a mock-up to test the fit and proportions. With my momma! I’m wearing #m7719 in this ivory brocade. I love this off the shoulder version! Only mod I made was to remove about 1.5” from the waistband (short torso). Fabric is pretty, but it was so difficult to work with. It still frayed pretty badly after overlocking the raw edges 😭. It was pretty thick so I didn’t think to use a different seam finish.

Pictures of the thrifted dyed wedding dress! Scroll to the end to see the wedding dress "before" pics! $20 thrifted wedding dress that I dyed eggplant and then sewed it into a new dress using Simplicity and McCall's patterns! The applique on the top where it attaches to the sweetheart neckline was originally on the stomach area of the wedding dress. I I alot of RIP seaming and re attaching to give it some shape. The back v was the original back v but I had to trim it some to tone down the wedding feel of the new dress. The sweetheart neckline came from the simplicity pattern and is a @gertie18 pattern. The lace applique on the skirt is original I didn't remove it, I just dyed the dress and it turned out that way, really cool! I did have to sew back together all parts of the skirt so that I could cut it into another shape. I used a previous mccalls pattern skirt length to ballpark where to cut. The lining is the original lining of the dress and came out a pretty lavendar color. And I already was asked if I dyed those shoes lol. No fun fact I wore those underneath my wedding dress almost 10 years ago 🤣🙌 they were pretty brittle when I tried them on though so they might be retired forever now. FINALLY! 🤣 My Wedding Guest Dress Shoutout to myself for forgetting to take pics at the wedding so I had to find time to do it when I got back home 🤣 but it was some pretty sunset light so I'll take it. I calculated what it cost to make this dress bc alot of people asked me at the wedding, ready for it? $42.64 🤣 not bad. It would have been cheaper but my lining actually cost more than the dress... I chose it that way though bc it was anti static. I feel like it had that designer feel too it also with a nice lining. Thread: $2.39 Zipper: $3.19 Fusible interfacing: $2.14 Charmuese outer pink fabric: $13.49 Lining: $21.43 Total = $42.64 Hours of labor: I should have logged this lol but I know for the skirt alone I had to handstitch horsehair onto it and it took about 2 hrs in front of the tv. If I had to guess it probably was 16 hours cause I worked on it a little eveyday. The pattern had a little bit of gaping but I mostly kind of fixed it. I'd be interested to make this pattern again and see if I had the same problems. I sized up in it bc I was worried about the waistline but it ended up being fine. I might even just try making my normal size. Recent #SewingFail roundup so I can clear my to-be-photographed rack. Also a picture from 2018 that still makes me laugh. 1) McCall’s #M7719 in polyester satin “This bodice looks like it won’t work for me and a different view on the same pattern certainly didn’t work. I’m going to make it anyway.” 2) #McCalls7113 polyester mikado I don’t have the curvy figure this 1963 pattern expects. Also, I have yet to make this type of bust dart + waist dart bodice that fits my body and I keep making them anyway without even attempting to learn how to do a small bust adjustment. 3) McCall’s #M6462 in polyester ponte The unintentional low waist isn’t my taste even though dropped waists are a trend right now. I’ll make this one again in something with less stretch and shorten the bodice, see what happens. 4) I was a beginner garment sewist in 2018. I mixed up the inseam and crotch seams during construction and got this monstrosity. 5) Simplicity #S9679 in mystery stretch sequin knit remnant and stretch mesh “It looks like I would feel uncomfortable with the top pulling against my neck like that, better use sharp sequins to make it even worse.” 6) #Butterick3383 Just like a small old dog being put in a sweater on cold days, I don’t like putting my head through tight necklines. I made a scoopneck to account for that which resulted in cold skin (the fleece needs cold temperatures), or weird bunching with a shirt under it. Gray sleeve is because the main fabric was a remnant without enough for two sleeves. 7) McCall’s #M7254 I started this cardigan (as the pattern calls it) with non-stretch tweed-like fabric during early covid doing my first (and still only) Hong Kong seams. I set it aside because stitching each seam five times instead of one was tedious. I picked it up a few years later to realize I had been doing HK seams where it would be fully enclosed and never seen. The unlined non-stretch fabric with sequins is uncomfortable.

I sewed some stuff, I rewatched all three seasons of “Making the Cut”, I got sick for a week-plus (not covid), I finally put away laundry after digging for socks in a giant laundry pile on the floor for many days in a row. Today is two weeks since I got fully vaccinated and things are starting to look up. We are not clear yet, with vaccination rates slowing in the US and the pandemic raging abroad, most notably in India. But today I am taking a pause to be thankful for the health care workers, essential workers, and my incredible support network over the past year for getting me to this point. . So today I am celebrating in my fabulous new linen jumpsuit with hand embroidery. This project is very much a product of the pandemic, made from bright red linen I ordered online and couldn't think of what to do with and a time-consuming hand-embroidered bodice that kept me busy in isolation. . My first lace dress is finished! I used #s8870 in a size 6 for the bodice I maybe should have sized up but I just used 1/2in seam allowance. The skirt is #m7719 I definitely should have graded my patterns like a normal human but I just winged it and ended up doing a fair amount of alterations around the waist. The fit is perfect but my lace pattern is a little off. The light blue crochet lace was purchased from @moodfabrics

The last of the wedding guest dresses I made this summer. Plus the wearable toile that I’m sure I’ll wear one day. I made quite a few mods to this dress. It’s the #m7719 from @simplicitymccallsuk (version 2+5). I had to take the top in a good few inches and make smaller bra cups than the waist band. I also added some built-in padding to give the cups some shape. I then added a high slit up the front of the skirt and lengthened it slightly. This was definitely a trial and error dress. It had to be tweaked a lot to get it to fit me. The fabric, while ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS, was an absolutely pain to press. It kept getting random stains whenever I’d apply heat to it. No idea!! I also didn’t pre-wash it as it’s silk dupion and I didn’t want it to lose its sheen. I’ll just have to be careful around food, drink and hot environments (no sweating) 😆 Very happy with how it turned out.
