I've tried to participate in a few sewing challenges this year but keep falling short. I finish the makes just not in time for the challenge 😅. It happens 🤷🏽‍♀️ and I still end up with a garment to wear so it's a win for me. This shirt was April''s #sewyourview but I didn't finish up the buttons until June. Better late than never. I sewed up size 32W with no mods. The sleeves came up a bit long so though I initially did the longer cuff from View B I had to remove them and use the cuffs for View D. I also made some silly mistakes such as cutting the wrong way on the placket and messing up my first buttonhole which I had to unpick. I also found there was a bit of gathering at the sleeve head as I was not able to ease in all the excess. Also if anyone has done a cleaner finish for the cuffs I am all ears. If you are new to shirt making this is a pretty beginner-friendly option and there is a sew-along by @brittanyjjones on YouTube for this pattern titled Simplicity 9707 which is just the smaller size band. Can I just say I am amazed that I was able to get this shirt and a skirt (shared in a previous post) out of 4 yards of fabric and was still able to re-cut a waistband and cuffs 🤯🙌🏽🙌🏽. Happy Friday ✨I made a shirt 😂 I have been wanting to add another summer shirt to my wardrobe yet always seem to add dresses! This is Simplicity 9707, a second version of this oversized shirt made in a soft cotton fabric. This is a fun, easy to sew shirt and could always use more of these! I have been busy working on some long awaited fabric experiments. And finishing up yet another summer dress. I love the idea of adding cyanotype images to garments so I experimented with a few different images and absolutely love how they came out. I am looking forward to doing more of these and incorporating them into a recycled garment. I also played with some serger scraps and made two pieces I am planning to use as pockets for another recycled garment. These were fun to do and used up a lot of saved fabric that won’t go to the landfill. I put the fabric pieces on a fleece backing and put a water soluble stabilizer on top and free motioned the stitching. I really like the look of the finished piece and will be doing more of that. It’s been a fun week of sewing experimentation 🧵🪡. ✨Finish (the day after) Friday ✨ Back in April 2024 this pattern came up as the monthly sewing challenge from @sewyourview. Most of the people who sew each month are in the northern hemisphere so normally it’s totally the wrong season for me to join, but although this was a spring pattern, I decided to join the challenge and make a shirt for autumn. I bought the fabric and the pattern… then nothing happened. So I decided in October I would make the shirt. I cut it out and then stopped because I knew I’d need to adjust the sleeve length and I just couldn’t be bothered. Thennnn I decided I’d just wing it and hoped the sleeves were long enough and ✨plot twist✨ they were too short! I shouldn’t have been surprised because I have long arms and have to adjust literally every pattern for sleeve length. So I put it on pause again, then this weekend I decided to adult, unpicked the cuffs and added new ones with an extra 1 1/2” length, and now it’s perfect. Simplicity S9707 & Friday Pattern Company Saltwater Slip Dress When this @sewhayleyjane viscose crepe arrived in the March box I knew it needed to be a summery make. Since I received the cream I decided I wasn’t going to make a dress since it was a little sheer. I decided to make @simplicity_creative_group #S9707. I made view A in a size 10 with no adjustments. This fabric was very delicate so I serged all the edges before sewing and did not baste or stay stitch not to risk pulling the fabric when unpicking. Overall I like this shirt, it has side seam pockets which is great but also can’t handle much weight, but good for a tissue and lip balm. I decided this needed a slip dress for under so I ordered some solid viscose from @minervadotcom and made a @fridaypatterncompany #saltwaterslipdress. I made a small in the knee length version with no waist ties. This was my first time making the shorter version and I really should make some more of these. I can’t believe I haven’t worn this all summer. There was a chill in the air this morning and it was my reminder to wear my summer makes! My latest make made it’s debut on holiday this week 🇲🇺🌴 It’s was finished just in the nick of time, save for a couple of missing buttons on the cuffs as I didn’t buy quite enough (a very annoying mistake to make). I also intend to go back in and bind the seams as I totally forgot to use french seams and I’m not keen on the visible overlocking when the sleeves are rolled up. This was one of those makes that I had big doubts about whist sewing, but it came together in the end. The fabric is so soft and has a lovely cool hand feel - perfect for the hot, humid weather in Mauritius! I have a Learn to Sew 3 “Classic Shirt Class” scheduled July 27 and August 3, 9:30-12:30. This is a great opportunity for ME, I get to make a bunch of samples! 🤗. The class is limited to 4 students, I provide a selection of patterns and a selection of shirt fabrics in linen, cotton and stretch cotton. Sewing machines and sergers provided with thread! You just bring your scissors and pins. This Italian linen print was purchased from Metro Textiles @metrotextilesnyc a while back and is sold out. Friday and finally some sunshine for Day 17 of #memademay. I sewed up Simplicity 9334 over the weekend in a bright summer floral challis fabric. It’s a cute top pattern with three different views. I made view c with the neck ties and love the drape of the shirt. I am trying to focus on more staple separates. I paired this with my jeans made from #me2069 that I absolutely love. The wide legged jeans are so comfortable and stylish. I also paired the jeans with Simplicity 9707 another newer make that is oversized and super comfortable. Memademay is a great time to take a look of what you already have and pair it differently. 🖤 When A Plan Comes Together🖤 I had admired a designer denim dress in this style last fall and then a few patterns were released recently that ignited my desire to make the dress. However, I had committed to myself to not buy new patterns but try to use the ones I already had this year (which are many 😉). I couldn’t get this design out of my head so I set about looking through my pattern stash to see what I could pull together. I started with Simplicty #s9707 because of its collar without a collar stand and fold over button placket. Then I used Butterick #b6852 because the fit was closer to the vision for my dress. Finally, I used the skirt from Simplicity #s9102 cut to the length I desired. In order to add the exposed zipper to the front, I had to redesign the button placket and create a facing. There was a lot of math and a lot of crossed fingers, but all in all, I’m thrilled with the result. I used a black chambray from @mandlfabricsanaheim and I absolutely love it! I’m ready to enter my shirt sewing era with this shirt I made last month. If only I get over sewing the buttons which took me the whole of may to do🤦🏾‍♀️. Yes to the #sewyourview April! This month’s choice was a pattern I had in my stash and I am so glad I did! Simplicity 9707 is an oversized shirt that I made with a silky print also from my stash. I absolutely love the way it turned out and can’t wait to style it for summer. I had just enough fabric leftover and sewed Simplicity 9550 for a coordinated se.t. I'm back from my holidays & finished making this #s9707 shirt, in view B. I got this 0.9m printed linen and 1 metre of the pink poplin from the remnant section of @spotlightstores & used these two complementary coloured fabrics and paired them together to give it a "colour-blockish" look ! What a great shirt pattern this Simplicity #s9707 is to make and wear! I made view B in a size 10 knowing that it would be oversized. However, I think I will size down to a size 6 next time because it’s a lot of fabric to tuck in, the back is VERY billowy, and the sleeves are just a bit too long. I love it anyway as it’s such a nice basic piece for my wardrobe. I made it with a lovely dark gray cotton chambray from @califabrics and it was such an easy fabric to sew. I French seamed the whole shirt, so that if I wear it when it’s warmer, I can roll the sleeves up to show off my finishing skills. ☺️ I used a sweet little @sarahhearts label too. 🖤 I highly recommend this chambray fabric and the shirt pattern. I already have a white linen lined up for this in the summer!
