Update. When sewing velvet, the most important thing to remember is to cut all your pattern pieces the same way. Otherwise, you may be forced to recut & redo lots of work. Dearest reader, we received an invitation at the ball of the season celebrating the love story of Slava and Melisa! I made these costumes for the wedding, an #m7493 for me and an #m8135 for Brian. I took apart an old vest he had and added new fabric for his waistcoat, made his neck scarf, and I made Lucia’s dress too. The wedding was beautiful, set in the endless twilight of Washington in July, and only ending after mama finally got the baby to sleep during a party and got to enjoy the dang thing for a while. Cheers to the newlyweds!

Documenting the Halloween sewing/patterns/materials-sourcing: Belle: Simplicity 9902, with modifications to make the skirt more voluminous. Pattern is an okay starting point but the bodice is designed for a distinct bust/waist difference (which toddlers don't have), and also has too much ease. Fabric from @fabricwholesaledirect - poly satin and poly chiffon. Squid: self drafted, with paper maché hat to give the squid body it's structure. Fabric also from @fabricwholesaledirect - scuba Beast: McCalls 8135, with modifications (single breast, collar, omit lining). This pattern fits snugly, very little ease. Blue poly velvet from @fabricwholesaledirect and gold lame from @joann. This poly velvet has a lovely, liquidy drape -- great for a gown but the jacket required a more structured fabric, so I had to interface the whole thing. Also, this pattern is super complicated and not for the faint of heart. I couldn't invest the hours necessary to sew it nicely, there was a lot of gluing, it was good enough to pass in the dark 😂 Mermaid: self drafted with various knits in the stash and tulle for the fin. We had a blast at the @bridgertonexperience in Atlanta! I used three McCall’s patterns to make these regency costumes; the vest, coat, and dress. I wanted an orange dress and my husband wanted a green coat, so I merged the two colors. It’s certainly a bolder combination than I typically would’ve chosen, but I love how it turned out. I even made a regency style handbag with leftover coat fabric to match!
