This Vintage Beauty is Simplicity 1459. 🌺This pattern has a lot of techniques rolled into one little dress. -Notched Collar -Set in sleeve -Lapped zipper -Sleeve darts(my 1st encounter) -Gathered waist -Facing -Lining -Button holes -boning(camberbund) and more.... Now that I have learned to do a full bust adjustment, I feel absolutely invincible. So when I suddenly ran into the perfect fabric, it was time to try my hand again at a big 4 pattern, one I have had laying around for a while now: #simplicity1459. And sometimes, a make turns out even more 'me' than usual: this was definitely one of those - seeing this come together was therefore an absolute joy 💕 (I mean, how chic is that collar? And how did I only need one toile?? And did I already mention how much I LOVE this fabric???) The belt on this is re-used from an earlier make (how convenient!!) and with the @textielstad fabric scraps of that same project I made the matching collar. I also happened to have these buttons lying around already. I made this dress before I did my Halloween sewing, but got so caught up in posting Halloween makes that it kind of slipped through the cracks! It’s not my favorite make, but I promised myself I’d try out more new patterns this year, and this was one of the new-to-me patterns I had on my list, Simplicity 1459. I don’t hate it, and I can see myself trying the pattern again, it’s just not something I’m excited to see in my closet. I think if I make this again, I’ll probably make the collar a little bit smaller (I don’t have enough shoulder for this wide collar!) and shorten the sleeve a bit. OK…. I may have skipped the giving it a good press stage… but this linen dress is finally done! It started as a mashup of the bodice from 1950s re-issue #S1459 and the skirt from genuine vintage 1950s #s4650 but I changed pretty much everything except for the the jumbo collar. The sleeves and pockets are self-drafted and I am particularly proud of the pockets! I also kinda like the experimental pleated hem! I have definitely put on weight during the 6 or so weeks it took to finish this, but I can still wriggle into it so it qualifies as a #tailoredmuumuu In fact, it really is completely tailored, as I hand stitched the two pleats down the front while wearing it! Thanks again to @sburet for the gorgeous mercurial grey linen! Overall this dress has a kind of austere 1930s chatelaine vibe, but the luxurious fabric (better than anything I would ever buy myself!) and all the hand stitching makes for a nice luxe contrast! #ithaspockets #sewover50 #slowstitching #sewingsomeoneelsesstash #patterhacking

Progress! Collar is done and the dress is whole! But still LOTS to do… As always, fit seems to vary with fabric, and the bodice is defo not quite right. The collar of this heavily hacked version of #s1459 has been basted to the bodice, but the bodice is not yet connected to the skirt… I didn’t have enough fabric for the under collar so it is black.. which shows a tiny bit where it has been clipped and turned… this is my second attempt at this pattern and it is always really tricky to turn at that point 😵‍💫 The good news is it looks like my experimental self-drafted pockets are a win! I don’t mind the folded bit caught by the seam nearly as much as I thought I would!! 🙂 I am hacking two 1950s patterns but the pockets have a definite 1940s vibe… I just need to decide now if I’m going to line the bodice… I’ve cut enough black cotton lawn to make a complete lining, but I’m still thinking about the pros and cons… This grey linen is very floppy and a couple of dresses I’ve made with linen seem to go a bit baggy in the bodice (esp at the side seams) and I wondered if lining might help? Anyone want to weigh in? To line or not to line?? Me Made May, day nine: on a hike! No fancy shoes today, as I’m about to go on a 10 km hike...wish me luck! I’m wearing Simplicity 1459 in a cotton poplin with a self-drafted circle skirt, and my new self-drafted cotton voile petticoat. I love the way the petticoat gives the skirt some more oomph, but is soft and cool on my skin. The lowest tier of this petticoat is a whopping 8 meter long! Hmmmm... definitely a one step forward three steps back kind of day. Super happy with the bias binding and the neckline at the front. And the fit with the darts at the front is not at all bad, especially considering that my favourite look, the #tailoredmuumuu is pretty difficult to achieve. The darts really need to be perfectly placed as the garment is still loose so the bust doesn’t push them into shape at all... anyway, adjustments made to the front for gaping neckline worked and basically the front is a win! However, the back necklne is gaping like crazy. I had done a FBA on #s1459 and for some reason I thought I now had a perfect bodice pattern I could do whatever I wanted with. It was not to be! That huge shawl collar on the original pattern was hiding a multitude of sins. So I have marked new darts and unpicked the bias binding at the back. But the light is fading and so am I. In the words of Scarlet O’Hara I can’t think about that today... I seriously need to get over myself and just make a basic block and draft my own patterns to my measurements. Not 100% sure why I keep putting this off and wasting my time trying to adjust pre-existing patterns. Part of it is definitely not wanting to stand around in my knickers and get measured. There must be a machine somewhere that could just scan you and spit out the perfect basic block? Maybe they could offer that service when you go to get a mammogram? Sigh. I love the three darts at the elbow on this sleeve, but as @drbeedee predicted it is way too tight. Even with the adjustment I already made to enlarge it. I haven’t set it in yet, but I don’t think it is worth the effort. Going to have to hit pause and decide what to do. I have enough fabric to cut one more set of sleeves, but not much more than that. I might use a shorter sleeve I already adjusted which is super comfortable, but looks a bit like a T-shirt sleeve. Just started a super-modified version of the reissued 1950s #s1459 in winter-weight cotton. OK. I admit it... it’s upholstery fabric. But these lemons make me so happy!!! I have changed absolutely everything except for the 3/4 length sleeve, which I wanted to try. This is my latest Brand Ambassador project with the lovely black kitties on purple fabric having been gifted by @minervadotcom I felt wearing it to Whitby just seemed right, it's a great dress nice and comfy. And the photos were taken at the end of the day, I was pleasantly surprised that the skirt hadn't creased from being worn while driving (it still hadn't creased by the time I was back at the hotel). I will get some sitting and indoor pictures once I am back across the border. My daughter had Sadie Hawkins dance last night and she had such a wonderful time with her friends! I was asked to take pictures of them and we were joking and laughing a lot. They are an amazing group of kids who are smart, funny and kind. It was such a privileged to be a small part of the evening. Daft picture , that doesn’t show my dress very well, but it sums up nicely the joy of being able to make the clothes you want to wear. A little story… Years before I actually got round to learning to sew I bought some original 1950s dress patterns from eBay because I loved this style of dress. They said easy on the front so I dove straight in. Ha! There is nothing easy about sewing with a vintage pattern when you have never sewn anything before. When I opened up the beautiful envelopes, inside were sheets of mystery that made absolutely no sense to me. So I bought some fabric & asked a local seamstress to sew the dress for me. I never got the dress because between us it got forgotten about & I moved away. Later I learned to sew, still because I wanted to wear 1950s style dresses. I learned whilst I had three toddlers. To be honest, it was an achievement to get all four of us dressed in anything and out the house on time, so 50s styling was not going to happen. Years of doing the school run followed, with jeans, trainers & warm clothes being the unwritten uniform. Now, finally, I’m making the clothes I want to wear. Last night I wore a freshly finished #simplicity1459 to a Christmas party and this is how it felt. So wear what you want to wear and then throw on a party hat for good measure. Edge finishing was one of the many steps I used to try to skip (a legacy of my mother’s many bad habits!). But now I am a total convert! Something about that first row of stitching makes getting a clean edge so easy and satisfying! Along with understitching (which @badatcounting converted me to a while ago) edge stitching is my new old-school sewing fave! My next selfmade dress! This is Simplicity 1459, a vintage reproduction pattern, in a cotton-poly poplin. I had to do some intense pattern hacking to get the top to fit: I went from two darts to four darts! Since this is a summer dress, I wanted it to be fitted but not too tight, and I think I found that sweet spot in the end. The skirt that comes with the pattern is gathered but I replaced it with a self-drafted half circle since I find that more flattering. I feared making a notched collar, but that turned out to be a breezy. And fabric-covered buttons are my new obsession!
