The piece I wore the most last winter was a version of this vest in a group of cotton flannels, so I decided to repeat that success in another color way. I took one yard each of 4 fabrics: Smokey Mountain Plaid, Cecil Herringbone, Gray Time Out, and Sherlock Houndstooth (all currently available on marcytilton.com). Arranged the fabrics on the design table and dress form - and in some cases cut 2 versions of the same pattern piece to see the results. I pin a scrap of the selected fabric on the pattern pieces and waited until the body of the garment is complete to cut out the collar. The one red button reflects a Japanese phrase Koh-itten, describing the aesthetic of one dot of red against a neutral background. We have so many different cotton flannels available right now, you could do a version of this in another color way too. Last winter I used a combination of cotton flannels to test out my new Fall pattern, V1817 for myself, liked it so much I repeated the same fabrics for the pattern envelope. This ended up being the garment I wore most last winter - cozy and comfortable and works over almost all of my cold weather clothes. Vogue 1817 made in our Black Cotton Patchwork Kantha, sewn by Marcy. Hand blocked cotton patches in a variety of prints are pieced together, over-dyed with black and then hand stitched vertically to a solid cotton backing which neatly finishes the piece. From India where hand made textile traditions continue. The fabric is made by hand in 10-12 yard pieces - let us know if you want one entire piece for a project. Right for garments, accessories and home decor. The mid weight will work for a shirt, jacket, coat or vest. Perfectly imperfect! The fabric is hand made - sewn, dyed and produced to order in small quantities in artisan workshops, usually hand finished by women and girls in their own homes. Imperfections are part of the hand made beauty of these fabrics. Kantha is fun to design and sew with. I used the selvedge edges (which are tucked under and hand stitched together), for the collar and facing edges. I substituted pleats for gathers and used single layer cotton for pockets. This vest feels wonderful and the weight will work indoors or outside and I'm going to love wearing it when the cool weather comes. Each piece of kantha is different depending on the weight of the original fabrics and the person who does the hand stitching. Some kantha is done from patchwork, others from whole cloth, some from recycled saris, others from new fabric. Designers are always coming up with new concepts and we keep an eye out for different designs and color ways.
