A few weeks ago I went pattern shopping with my Mom. We loved paging through the pattern books reminiscing about when my Mom used to make my clothes when I was little. So wished I was interested in learning to sew back then, but so glad I do now. I chose this pattern which is Simplicity S9464 #s9464 @simplicitymccallsaustralia and made it in a size 22 (my sizing is normally a UK 16). I had to grade it out a little on the waist. It’s a very fitted dress with a lovely neckline, fitted bodice with darts and buttons down the back. It has a side zip which I didn’t add and I just placed a button after the waist fit and it fits really nicely. Fabric is a lovely organic linen military green from @wearethefabricstore I had some of this linen already in my stash and then my friend gave me her military green linen she no longer needed and combined together it was enough fabric for this dress. Close up🌷Finished 40s Floral Dress🌷 I went with the grey-blue buttons, with flower shape design, for the back closure. I did love one of the larger buttons for drama but I only had 4 and I just felt like this would leave the back opening quite gappy, so these were the next best option and I'm still happy with them. There is also an under arm side zip closure on this dress. I usually really dislike an under arm zip because it's always sooo difficult to get the dress over your head and shoulders (especially if you've already put your lipstick on, and even more so if you accidentally left your glasses on and get stuck!) however, I thought if the back was unbuttoned it would be OK. As it happens, the bodice is loose enough that it's not actually an issue with the buttons done up. Sounds like a fuss over nothing but it's a bug bear of mine and if you were put off by the zip then I'm just saying it's fine on this dress! 🌷Finished 40s Floral Dress🌷 I looove it! The fabric is still so gorgeous to me and it matches pink accessories perfectly! The dress style is a little loose around the waist, which is perfect for layering, and when it's warm I'll just wear a belt like here. The neckline shape is so pretty but still high which I like. Sometimes I wonder if the sleeves are too puffy... What do you think? Overall I absolutely love it and have already worn it quite alot! This was such a satisfying make! As always I automatically assumed it was going to be a bit tricky and actually it was a really great straightforward sew! I love the back with the buttons and took ages choosing the best matching one ( I think I've changed my mind already about which button I should have chosen😅🤭). All the buttons were from my stash. This fabric is really narrow so I only just squeezed my pattern pieces (large gathered skirt, wide back pieces because they fold over for the button plackets and big puffy sleeves!). So pleased I fit the dress out of it and for the facings I just used a pretty cotton fabric from my stash. 🍂First fall dress for myself, and a bouquet too. 💐Simplicity #s9464. I don’t fit into the largest measurements, so I had to grade out to my measurements, and the major changes I made were: ✨ADDING 4.5 inches to the waist measurement. ✨Lengthening the bodice. ✨Moving the darts down. ✨Adding 2.25” to the arm widths. ✨cut the skirt width the entire width of fabric- for more volume-less waste. I still want to make a matching belt, this ribbon will do for now, but we’re on to a good start. For Me Made May - Day 15, I have a brand new dress to share! 🎉🍃🌱👗🍃🌿 This dress is my first attempt at a @gertie18 (Charm Patterns) Night and Day Dress. I used the square neckline bodice - Size 8, D/DD cup, with a few refining adjustments for a better fit. I made a muslin to work out the fit issues. I didn’t have enough fabric left to make the yoke skirt from the Night and Day Dress pattern, so I borrowed a skirt from Simplicity 9464 (#S9464), a recent 1940’s vintage reissue, but I shortened it a bit. I also added crochet trim in between the skirt and bottom ruffle. Later I might add a strip of black bias tape along the top edge of the trim to create a sharper, crisper line between lace and fabric - at the moment it looks a bit smudgy to me. The beautiful fabric and crochet trim are both from Joann. I can’t decide if I like it better with or without the narrow satin sash belt. Maybe both are good, just different. Next time I make this bodice I’m going to shorten the shoulders jusssst a little more. I’m well obsessed and looking forward to sewing with the Night and Day dress pattern again and again in the near future! The seventh photo is of my maternal grandparents on their wedding day in June of 1946. My Grandpa's brother and my Grandma's sister, who are standing at their sides, were married on the same day a year later! The last photo is my Grandma's wedding dress, which is a simple post-war wedding dress, which has lost its color due to age and being dyed in the 1970s to be worn as my aunt's prom dress. Which I don’t mind but good to keep in mind when doing it again. Had to tear myself away from my grandson to get my #blackpanther outfit finished I am using this great African print fabric, making the sleeves from #Butterickpatterns #B6537 and also using some contrasting piping on the neck of the bodice and the cuffs of the sleeves.
