I’m not sure what to call this garment (a mini dress? A peplum top? A tunic?) but after getting shoved aside for alterations work, Christmas gift making, and a couple of illnesses, it’s finally done! One of the first things I thought when I saw this design it was how perfect it was for hiding breast-feeding openings. So that’s what I’ve done here. I shortened the length because I knew this was going to be somewhat experimental, and I didn’t have much of the blue gingham. I was going for sort of a casual apron top look, although I’m not sure I quite hit the mark. Sometimes I think the short full skirt reads more as “ice-skating costume” 😆 Oh well. Pattern is Butterick 6211 The gingham is a hand me down from my Grandma, I’m pretty sure it’s a poly-cotton blend. The solid blue is Supima Cotton Sateen from JoAnn. Modifications: Besides doings lot of fitting work and cropping the length, I changed the underskirt into a half circle skirt to match the overskirt. I never liked the way the other walkaway dresses hung with the straight underskirt, and also I found the weight imbalance between the front and the back to be a problem. I added interfacing into the points of the wrap over fronts. I was kind of shocked the instructions didn’t include that, I really think it needs the extra stability. And to make this breast-feeding friendly, I put zippers in the bodice underneath the wrap over fronts. I experimented with different closures on a toile, but in the end anything but zippers left the openings gaping, because of the fitted style of the bodice. I was afraid the zippers would look lumpy, but I actually can’t see them at all! This wrap-over style is still prone to looking sort of unstable if you are in any other position than perfect posture, but I think it’s good enough to wear around the house and running errands. #b6211 #sewing #sewersofinstagram #imakemyownclothes #walkawaydress #gingham #supimacotton #retrostyle #vintagesewing #sewbreastfeeding

I’ve had this Butterick pattern in my stash for ages but reading the previous reviews online were pretty discouraging plus I wasn’t a fan of the original skirt underlay pattern so it sat in my box of unmade patterns for years. I think they even used this pattern in an episode of The Great British Sewing Bee a few seasons ago. Hmmmm Patrick Grant is mighty fine 🥰 .... Anyway, I digress! Recently Kara from @dressedapp did a wonderful job of writing a tutorial which was a complete deviation from the original instructions. I think Kara’s hack worked out sooooo much better than what the pattern originally intended. As a fabric saving exercise, the only thing I did differently was to add a box pleat in the centre front opening to mimic the skirt underlay and forgo the faux buttons as the fabric is already quite busy. I also had this fabric in my stash for years and didn’t really know what to make of it so in light with the covid pandemic, working from home, self isolation etc etc, I thought it was most appropriate 😉🔬🧪 However you can bet that I already have a few fabric combos (using what I already have) to make this again and again ☺️💃🏻✂️👗#b6211 #butterickpatterns #butterick6211 #sewingproject #sewingescapades #memadejuly2020 #memade #memadewardrobe
