Dress reveal! I adore this pattern and I couldn't be happier with the result...and I won their best dressed contest! I used Butterick 6485 with a few changes. I used a 9in neck zipper instead of a full back zip as this dress is very large (even sizing down my usual 2 sizes in modern patterns) and it can just be slipped over the head. I also omitted the sewn in waist ties in favor of a 2in self-made belt using a vintage buckle with added carriers. I also enlarged the sleeve by 2in in width as I have larger arms. I think I'm going to need a lot more of this dress in the future! Solid fabric is stretch crepe and pattern is rayon challis. Shoes are from B.a.i.t. After being inspired by @clare.bradders on GBSB I simply had to recreate this two-tone 1940’s tea dress. This dress was quite advanced for my skill level but I do feel a lot more confident now I have made it and will probably make it again. The pattern also comes with a long sleeve option. I paired the dress with a swing style jacket from my vintage pattern collection as I seriously overbought on this fantastic @ladymcelroyfabrics and aubergine sienna crepe fabric from @minervadotcom l, which has been lovely to work with. School started in August so I've had a lot less time to sew. This dress, based on Butterick 6485 and still unfinished, is what I've been picking away at for the past few weeks a couple hours at a time. I didn't expect much of the pattern since reproduction vintage is pretty hit or miss, and even so I was surprised at how weird this is. If I made according to my pattern envelope size, I would have had 8" (20cm) EXTRA fabric in the bust, and even more in the waist. This was all supposed to be shaped with wide waist ties for a bow in the back, but I kept picturing all that extra fabric just bunched up around my waist looking really awkward and feeling uncomfortable. So I cut out the smallest size, which would still give me 4" (10 cm) fabric in the bust for movement. I didn't account, however, for what this would do to the shoulders and the placement of the darts - and have had to make some after-the-fact changes to the dress to make it minimally wearable. Especially adding shaping in the back and a lot of adjustments to the underbust darting. Sadly in the process of basting and picking out so many seams while trying to get it to fit better, I damaged the fabric a little by one of the bust darts. It's going to fray there and be too weird to wear soon. But the fabric was free at least, from a friend who got it from a buy nothing group where someone found it in a house they'd just bought. So this was always meant to be a test anyway before I decided if I'd dedicate fabric I paid actual money for (lol @ this when all my fabric comes from thrift stores). Maybe I will, maybe I won't. I'm surprised and grateful that I'm not more frustrated by this. Finally got around to making some decisions about my makes for 2019. I am changing my focus a bit to dressier looks. Most of my wardrobe is jeans and t-shirts, which I wear the majority of the time. My closet is sorely lacking anything dressy, if I had to put on a dress I would have to spend a fortune to buy something for the occasion. Now is the time to think ahead, anticipate the need and prepare for any up coming event. I also plan on getting out more to see and do more things this year so it will feel good to be well dressed. The other side is that these makes require more challenging techniques, I am interested in growing my technical sewing skills. Have you made any of these? Here’s my finished frankenpattern dress! The bodice is Butterick 6485 which I cut at the waist to attach to the skirt of Butterick 5951. I’ve made both patterns before so knew they’d probably work together. The fabric is a gorgeous viscose from @fabricgodmother which was so lovely to work with - swipe for a close up of the vibrant colours.
