Just finished making this #m8446 by @brandijoan This is my first time trying her patterns. I really like them so far. I like the elegant design and that it fits comfortably without being too tight at the waist area. It will be great to wear on my next vacation 😁 . . Mods: I did an exposed bias binding for the armscyes by using a bias binder foot. I also omitted the cute keyhole back detail by mistake but I might sew a shorter version and add this feature. My sister got married last week. I made her a dress for the occasion 💁‍♀️ No big deal, it’s just the most beautiful thing I’ve ever made and she looked absolutely stunning in it 😍 I took a lot of photos and videos during the process and plan to share some in my stories for those who are interested :) The pattern is a heavily modified version of #m8446 by @brandijoan - but backless and fully lined, among other things. I wanted a bias-cut dress pattern with a leg slit to start me off, and this one did just fine 👍 Fabric is a lovely crepe-backed silk satin from @fabricgodmother - it was on the thin side which caused me all sorts of worry but it turned out juuust right for a wedding in the tropics 🏝️ Oh and have I mentioned that we only decided three months ago that I would do this? And that we live about as far apart as possible while still being in the same country? I finally basted my muslin for @chicagofrocktails, no closures or facings were sewn. I needed to see a couple of things: what @brandijoan pattern #M8446 would look like if I didn't cut on the bias, if I used stretch fabric, if I used no closures, the length of the dress, the fit of the gathering, and the slit! I've NEVER made a muslin, that's a lot of extra work 😩but I now see the virtues and benefits 🥹. All of my questions were answered and I need to finally cut into my fashion fabric and sew! I mentioned last week that this dress quickly went downhill after the live session. Here’s the full story and my honest review of the pattern @simplicity_creative_group #m8446 Determined to finish the dress, I decided to take in the sides by a few inches and raise the split to mid-thigh as shown on the pattern envelope. After making these adjustments, I found that the split didn’t lay naturally. I had two options: close the split completely for a modest midi dress or partially close it and create a mini dress. I opted for the mini since I would wear it more often. However, while surging the inside, I accidentally cut through the back of the dress. I patched it up using fusible tape, which is a temporary fix but sufficient for photographs and maybe one wear. That’s how my dress took a turn for the worse. As for the pattern review, it’s a simple design with stylish lines, but to achieve the look on the pattern envelope, several modifications are needed. I recommend making a muslin first, as you might need to size down for a contoured waist. Additionally, you may need to redraft the split if you want it to lay naturally. While I love Brandi Joan patterns, I suspect the photo on the envelope involved strategic posing or clipping to achieve that look. However, if you prefer a looser fit and a more modest split, this pattern is perfect. I would make it again without the split or as another mini. It’s fun, flirty, and easy to assemble.
