#makenine2024 update! I’ve definitely stalled a bit in my creating in the first 6 months of the year, but managed to check 3 items off my #makenine with 3 more in progress. I’ve completed 2 Sunrise Skorts with one queued as a late birthday gift for my roomie, the grief sweater, and 2 pairs of socks. Turns out, socks are fun! And easy! Currently toiling my three Big 4 patterns (shock of all shocks) and hope to complete before the summer is out. Should things all work out, the Vogue will quickly be repeated a dozen times over for some work dresses. On pause is the Minna dress, Winona Polo, and Polar Pullover. The Minna is paused because I want to send to A0 print and need to send multiple patterns at once. #MMM24 day 9. A Paddy photo bomb: results of trying to quickly take a photo with a toddler. This dress always feels like my most “teacher” dress so it felt only appropriate to take an image in front of our bookshelf we built in the playroom. The playroom is sort of a hallway and has 3 bedrooms and a bathroom off of it. So, wall space is odd. This is the hallway part of the room and I didn’t want to waste this space, so using the idea of the single Ikea wall mounted bookshelves, I designed this full wall, forward facing bookshelf. The bottom two rows are smaller for board books that Paddy can currently reach and not destroy, the top 4 are a collection of books from my classroom and a huge gumtree haul I got recently (177 books for $50 😮). Sought joy in a new dress and apple orchard after this week In an attempt not to 1) screw up any of my Christmas gifts and 2) avoid a RSI, I channeled my emotions into finally finishing some WIPs from before my move. This #v9197 was meant to be a toile for a workhorse dress, using a cotton I’ve been hoarding for about 2 years (me to me: girl, it’s a $4/yard quilting cotton why are you hoarding this). Ultimately, I don’t think I need to make this again, but I see why it was all over Instagram in 2021. I loved the classic silhouette, the cup sizes (which Simplicity seems to be doing away with), and the bug pockets. However, the jewel neck seems to emphasize my chest more and the French dart doesn’t work well with my shape. The jewel neck also makes it a little difficult to layer. I may pick up more of this fabric and make another shirt dress, which is probably better suited for. #MMM24 day 28. In my freshly painted bathroom. If you saw my stories on this, I painted it and the colour completely bled. I mulled it over but knew i wasn’t going to be satisfied so I sanded the whole room, painted it all back white and started again. This time I used a better tape and did an initial white coat in each square. It took a while but it was so worth it. The pictures I already had from our last place and the hanging pots are new from @ikea_australia but I sprayed them from beige to navy. Just needs the vanity to be painted and the frame to be hung around the mirror. Maybe some organisation happening for a the ever growing pile of bath toys too. Is it possible for one person to be THIS on brand? Am I the singularity of on-brand-ness? Despite concerns about the super pointy darts I am beyond smug with this #v9197 in @moodfabrics Jardins de Versailles cotton poplin! I flatlined the bodice and bound it with a bias strip, lengthened the short sleeves a few inches, and had to fiddle the armscye and sleeve cap a bit to eliminate the puckers. For today’s #memademay2024 post I’m wearing #v9197 @mccallpatterncompany in a @atelier_to_naniiro_textile fabric I bought years ago @patchhalifax. I loved this fabric so much I waited until I had a TNT pattern worthy of using it! @doublebassgirl is finally made something from this fabric!

Vogue V9197 I bought this “fabric” in the @ikeausa kids section. It is a twin duvet. I loved the large scale print and knew it would work well for a fun dress. Since the print is so large I didn’t want to make anything that would break up the print too much so I had to think about what to make. I ended up using Very Easy Vogue V9197 that so many people in the sewing community swear by and hack. I have had it for a while but never made it. The pattern calls for a knit or stretch woven but I knew I could make it work with a woven. And this was the perfect “fabric” to test it. I made a size 12 in view A. I used a 3/8” seam allowance for a little more ease. I opted for bias binding instead of a lining. I made this in the spring and finally wore it today. I will definitely be making more of these and can see many hacks in my future. Self-drafted Check Dress 💃🏼 As stated in the reel about this dress, this make was one of my #makenine2023 projects. I wanted a dress that had a relaxed fit, have pockets, and would be work and non-work appropriate. I was inspired by the beautiful dresses designed by @faithrowanleeves in East Sussex and the Ciccoline white paprika was the perfect fabric for it. The bodice is self-drafted from my bodice block (swipe to see bodice block pieces), the sleeves are #v9197, and the skirt and pocket pieces are rectangles. I love gingham and check fabricsx however am terrible at pattern matching. In theory, it should be easy but I’m a combination of lazy, impatient and forgetful. It comes back to bite me as I’m annoyed when I look at the centre back of this dress, at least I don’t have to look at it when wearing it. I originally made this dress with long sleeves (swipe to see these) but I live in a tropical climate so I wasn’t sure what planet I was on when I made that decision. I would (and have!) get much more wear from this dress if the sleeves were shorter, and so they were snipped. The lining is still not sewn onto the bodice at the waist. I got too excited and have worn it with half the lining attached. I have to be in the right mindset for hand sewing and I haven’t found the time or space to sew it yet. I started this dress in January, but it was put on the back burner when I was revising for my exam. All in all I reckon it took me 10 hours total to make from start to finish. When I first starting making this dress, I was worried it would look like school uniform due to the fabric’s print, but thankfully the shape (and my obvious age!) means it doesn’t…I think!? I had a whole plan for a different Halloween getup until about a week ago, when Andy decided to take our costumes into an entirely new direction. If he would be the Joker, could I pull off a Harley Quinn costume in time? Challenge accepted! ▪️ I had a few patterns in mind to use, but ultimately went with #V9197 for the top and #B6750 for the trousers. I didn’t want to dress like the more recent iterations of the character, so I took inspiration from her original look with some creative liberties. I intended for the entire top to be in the harlequin pattern, but I tapped out after making just enough fabric for the front of the bodice - it was too labour-intensive and I was trying to balance a time crunch and a dying machine. The print was made by cutting out dozens of red and black rhombuses and piecing them together, one by one then row by row. I used some leftover ones to decorate my trousers. ▪️ Instead of making a full collar and cuffs, I used a couple of thrifted lacy placemats and added them to the neckline and wrists. I foolishly finished attaching the arms to the bodice when I was tired, and thus my serger ate part of a sleeve cap 🫠 I had zero patience left at this point so I just left it as-is (if a child clocks me on it tonight, they’ll get an extra chocolate bar). TW negative body talk I’ve been feeling so uninspired lately to sew. Partly because my machine is in the basement so I’m completely separate from the rest of the world, but partly due to some measurement fluctuations. Sewing has helped me get closer to body neutrality, especially post-Covid and post-knee, and I’m able to move my body the best I’ve been able to over the past 2 years. I even started dance classes that bring so much joy! But despite that and eating well my measurements have gone in the opposite direction that I want them to. And I’m doing everything “right”! One more fair dress done! Using one repeat of the statue panel from @moodfabrics and some black stretch poplin from @dalston.mill.fabrics, I hacked this together from a #v9197 bodice and a drafted skirt with tiers and slash pockets. The neckline and pocket turns have self piping which I’ve never done before and am EXCESSIVELY pleased with, the invisible zip foot worked a trick for making and attaching it. I need a jaunty 👏 straw 👏 boater 👏 for this #v9197 in Mystery Stripe Herringbone from @abakhanfabrics! Somehow the sleeves went in perfectly without hassle unlike the last two but are now quite snug despite using exactly the same pattern pieces? Shows how fabric can totally alter the fit— also moved the darts to solve the pointy boob issue, and cut the skirt halfway between the two lengths shown on the pattern. For fun details I added a bias binding on the sleeve cuffs that matches the neck binding! I did a sewing review this year. I purged patterns and fabric and kept what I felt worked for my body and my style. We constantly evolve as people and consequently our style changes. Obsessed with fit, I remade the bodice with my self-drafted bodice sloper and remade the skirt without the gathering. I made a muslin and dress in this pattern in 2021 so I knew it worked. But with different fabric, each TNT pattern is a sewing journey, meaning many hours making many little adjustments and trying on the dress a gazillion times while making it. I lined the dress. Vogue V9197 Sometimes I see a fabric that is totally insane that I just need to have it. I spotted this cotton fabric on the @stonemountainfabric website when I was scrolling and couldn’t stop laughing. The next day I got an email about their anniversary sale so of course I had to purchase it. I didn’t have a plan for it but decided it needed to be a dress. I decided to go with a simple pattern so the print wouldn’t be broken up. I chose @simplicity_creative_group #V9197. I made a size 12 with no adjustments other than using bias binding on the neck rather than the facing.
