This is my second time making this jacket, the first time was in 2017, or close to. I liked the unusual lines of this jacket and the flared back. I used a brocade, and used the wrong side (I wanted a black jacket with texture).  I have quite a few metres of this fushia pink brocade from Fabricland and liked the look of the wrong side.  Will I regret it....maybe? For the inside I lined the jacket with Kasha Lining (from Leather and Sewing Supply Depot).  I didn't tailor this jacket but did add fusible horsehair canvas to the collar, handy when you are not adding pad stitching! I think I'm finally figuring out that the key to my sewing happiness is variety: 1) Something ambitious, challenging, or a bucket list garment. It requires a muslin, pattern alterations, and careful fitting. It will fill a wardrobe niche that I can't easily fill with ready to wear. Current example: Vogue 9212 #v9212 . My dream winter coat. I cut my new size, did an FBA, cut out the muslin, and dangit, I AM NOT SCARED THIS TIME. 2) Something easy that I can wear soon. The pattern boasts that it can be made in a short time, I've made it before and know the pattern fits, I can baste-fit as I go, the fit is forgiving enough to do a wearable muslin, or I can wing it and expect it to be wearable (knits). Current example: #seamworkmadhu I ACTUALLY SMILED AT MYSELF WHEN I TRIED IT ON FOR THE FIRST TIME. WITHOUT A MUSLIN. 🤯 3) Something that has been languishing in an almost-done state or just needs minor alterations, finishing touches, or mending. Mending isn't sexy, but it's so magical... you just do a little thing and suddenly you can wear the garment again. Markes you wonder why you put it off. 4) Something that's in a hand-sewing phase. Hems or bindings I failed to catch with my machine topstitching (or just want to sew by hand), zips, buttons, waistbands, hooks and eyes, bra strap carriers. Backup for this: knitting. Recent example of 3 and 4: my quarter circle skirt wearable muslin. It's just waiting for its first press now. My sewing room is also our office, and is frequently needed for work. I don't usually have the brain space or enough time to work on something ambitious on weeknights after work, but want to sew SOMEthing. Ambitious projects take me too long and I tend to lose motivation once there project is out of season. I need something I can wear soon to keep me motivated. I like to keep my hands busy during couch time. If I can plan for this menu, I always have options for sewing and can be opportunistic when I'm able to sit down at the machine. Now if I can only learn to keep the piles of fabric and notions for three or four simultaneous projects better organized in our small home... #isewmyclothes #sewistsofinstagram #notenoughhoursinaday

Couture Quilting Details! I used #v9212 as the base for this design. The fabric is a rayon blend scuba knit purchased from @emmaonesock The top stitching thread is 100% silk Gutermann machine twist. All quilting is done on two layers of fabric. The garment was thread traced first and rough cut. Quilting lines were marked and basted before machine stitching. Seams are lapped. Shoulder and neck seams are strapped. The garment closes with fabric covered snaps. I always do lots of samples first when deciding on supplies, machine set up and techniques to be used. Made using @moodfabrics leopard metallic brocade and @simplicity_creative_group Vogue 9212 pattern #v9212. Some couture sewing techniques used such as piped seams, fabric covered snaps, and topstitching. Machine Top Stitching! Swipe to view the close up details of this scuba knit jacket I did for Vogue. To obtain perfect results I chalked the stitching lines, basted two layers of fabric together and used a straight stitch throat plate with a top stitching needle. A longer stitch length of 4mm highlights the stitching. I used Gutermann 100% silk machine buttonhole thread in a contrasting colour. Couture Quilting! Vogue asked me to come up with a garment for an issue that would appeal to quilters. Here is what I came up with. I call it Couture Quilting as it involves a lot of preparation and handwork for what appears to be a simple machine sewn jacket. Needless to say it was a hit!
