I made this a while back for a vintage event from some fabric that was in my stash that I picked up at a sewing fair, I had no idea what I was going to make with it but knew I had to have it. I cant remember what fabric it was but it feels like a cotton mix, I used taffeta for the contrast. Its circa 1948 which was start of the Dior New look period in the States when skirts became fuller as rationing ended although here in the Uk rationing kept on till the early 1950s so it still was granny’s curtains for #reviveandthrive. I wore this last year to Goodwood Revival and I got stopped and interviewed about my outfit by goodwood tv. a sneakiest peek at my love my muse my vintage pain the the tukus, a 1940s wool coat dress with the most spectacular shawl collar because i haven't finished her hem yet 🧵🪡 i want to talk to you about all of the insane detail sewing she required and the new techniques i learned (bound buttonholes! (ty @vintageontap) linked buttons! (guessed entirely!) clipping and finishing princess seams! (offset your notches and serge that shit) i sewed two muslins to test fit! (look im usually perfect out the envelope sorry!!) i learned how to do a full bust adjustment on said princess seams! I've made myself a new winter coat. The fabric is a lovely vegan wool from @minervadotcom and is so cosy and warm. Lining is a polycotton, also from Minerva The pattern is Vogue 1738, a re-issue of a vintage 1948 pattern, which is actually for a dress with a side zip fastening, so I had to hack the pattern quite a bit to get a front fastening coat. I put so much love and attention into this coat. To give the coat a more weighty feel I interlined the bodice with interfaced muslin, which is what I also used for the facings. I didn’t like how the serged finish looked on the muslin so I covered them in more muslin which I pick stitched down (including around the armsyce). The hem I covered in 1” cotton twill tape which matches the muslin perfectly in color and makes my coat feel cottage and lux all at the same time. I also added a little golden bee embellishment at the top of the extra long kick pleat- cause it just felt right. It was all a lot of work but it felt worth it. . . .
