I drafted a hood this morning and tested it. I followed a YT tutorial by Alisa of Thoughtful Creativity. The toille only has one front bodice piece because I cut the other side off in order to transfer the new dart position back to the pattern. This will become a hacked version of #m7513 . I'm wondering whether to add some interfacing to the edge of the hood to help it hold its shape?🤔 I decided to use fusible interfacing for the back belt but I cut horse-hair interfacing for the front. I want to have another go at pad stitching but I cut the horse-hair the same size as the pattern piece rather than slightly larger.🤦‍♀️ I should probably re-cut it. My plan is also to line the peplum. The pattern doesn't say to do this but having bought this gorgeous leopard print fabric to line the jacket, I want to use it throughout. I also figure that this is where you are most likely to see flashes of it when worn. Unfortunately, lining the peplum left me a little tight for lining the hood. I managed to squeeze it out by cutting it on the crossgrain. This may prove to be beneficial as the lining has 2 way stretch. Turning the pattern piece 90° means that the stretch 'gives' over the top of the head rather than horizontally. I still need to sort pocket bags. I'm sure I can use pocket pieces from another pattern but I still need to find them and check the fit. I also decided to cut the centre back bodice on the fold (which is why the seam allowance is overhanging the edge of the fabric). This seam appears to have no other function than to line up with the centre back seam of the peplum...which is hidden by the pleats anyway.🤯 The sleeves I had previously hacked into 2 pieces with the assistance of Kim Dave on YT. I also lengthened the upper front bodice to sit at the natural waist. I really need to do a drafting course. I've had a Burberry jacket pinned on my inspiration board for years (last slide), but the design details that I loved were very apparent in #mccalls7513 view A. I made mine using a high retention knit, and chose not to line it. The other change I made to the published directions was to the pleats. I stitched the the skirt together, them made the center an inverted box pleat instead of having two mirrored knife pleats joined with some seams. (It looked so sloppy!) I decided to make them all inverted box pleats. The length is perfect for using it as a light weight spring jacket, or a suit jacket. (Yes, I made coordinating pants) It turned out exactly as I wanted it to look! A little pattern fitting adjustment of #m7513 I know every body is unique in it's own ways but I can't help wondering who the Big 4 think their target market is. I imagine the demographic to include more dressmakers that don't have perky boobs that sit just under the chin.🍨🍨🤣 Anyway, I've learnt my lesson previously so I toilled the upper bodice of this pattern today. Obviously, the bust point was way off.🙄 More surprising was how short the front was on me. The back was fine so, as you can see, I've added a wedge of extra length from the centre front, tapering to nothing at centre back. Hope this works out ok. I'm not sure why there is a centre back seam. It's straight so there is no shaping created. I have a cunning plan (to quote Baldrick of Blackadder😁) for the back of this jacket so I will likely lose this centre seam and cut it on the fold. I also redrafted the sleeve into an upper and lower sleeve. I really like the shaping created by this type of sleeve and I think it aids comfort in an outer garment. OMG. I just thought about pockets. It has to have pockets. My first tailored jacket! I really wanted a nice medium weight blazer for the spring and fall and this worked perfectly. I tried a bunch of new techniques here, like padstitching the lapel to make it lay nicely and prick-stitching the front seam allowances so they don't roll. I am just thrilled with the finished product and I know it will get a ton of wear. I think I say this every time I make something new, but this is my new favourite jacket! As I said in my previous posts, this is the @mccallpatterncompany 7513 in View D, and I used the @minervadotcom Core Range 21 Wale Cotton Babycord in Cobalt Blue. I love working with this fabric, although it does shed a little. It's not too bad, and this was a fully lined jacket, so it's not a concern for me, but just so you know, when working with this you have to finish your seams. The fabric sews really well and presses super well too. As this is a napped fabric, I avoid pressing it on the right side so I don't crush the pile, but otherwise, it's really lovely to work with. I'm usually a big fan of McCall's patterns, and very rarely have to do any alterations. Until now! I had to reduce the seam allowance of the underarm seam on the sleeves, because the original was too tight. This is still not the roomiest sleeve, but it's okay. When I make this again in the future, I will have to add a little seam allowance to the underarm seams if I want to wear the future jacket with sweaters and layers (as I often do in winter!) Because I reduced the seam allowance of the sleeve, I ended up having too much ease when it came to setting in my sleeves to the armhole, so I ended up deciding to gather all the ease into the shoulder and having a little gather detail there. I think it added a little more vintage flair to the jacket, so it's not a bad thing for me. I feel like a lot of what people think is skill, is actually just the way I style out my mistakes 😂 Anyway, I enjoyed this pattern - easy to follow, simple enough techniques, and I really love the end result. New fabric arrival. 🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆🐆 I know, I know. I really do have enough fabric but this textured black wool was too good to pass up. The wool is thinner than I expected but it is so fine that it feels silky. I think the thickness should work really well with my intended project though. (Swipe to see the pattern.) I should be able to get some nice sharp pleats across the bum area.😊 The lining fabric is quite thick for a lining. In fairness it was listed on Ebay as stretch satin, not lining. It's almost got a waterproof feel to it. It has a slippery-ness to it, so I think it will function well enough as lining. I'll have to check but I think I've even got some oversized black buttons that will work with this wool. I am no tailor but I love a more complex project. Oooh, I might even do some pad stitching.😍 I was also planning on adding a hood. I love a pattern hack. Day 15 was mostly a lounge day at home so the slouchy cardi from the gbsb book was my go to whilst crocheting.
