A few years ago, I had a chance to taste all wines from the Textbook winery, or I thought so. A few days later, I found a "Barrel Thief" Textbook at a local wine shop in Seoul, and wondered how I missed this. Actually I hadn't seen or even heard of it before. Then, I could not find much information on this wine. It wasn't listed in the #texrbookvineyards website. #cellartracker didn't recognize it. There were #vivino reviews but it seemed all reviewers were Koreans. Wondered if this was a wine fraud. 😁 According to a Korean blog, who said her/his friend actually checked with the winery, this is "an exclusive South Korea export wine." Ah ha. The back label says the grapes are from three vineyards in #napavalley. It's "hand-picked and hand-sorted, with 16 months maturation in small French oak barrels." Another web blog which I assume is of the importer says, it's a blend of #cabernetsauvignon (91%) and #merlot (9%). It's pretty nice and all very balanced. But, somewhat too balanced to have a kick. (SP: 3.7/5) But then, perhaps because of it, it goes very well with #jeon, Korean traditional food. “야, 무슨 화이트가 브리딩을 했을 때 맛이 훨씬 좋아진다?!” 퇴근 길에 이 와인 한 병을 무심히 건내주고 간 친구에게 보낸 카톡 메세지. 그랬다. 처음에 한 모금 마시고. ‘음…? 이 와인이 어디가 좋다는겨…?’ 했다. 그리고 그렇게 몇 시간을 방치해 두었다. 그래도 뭐 술을 버리긴 아까우니, 음식에나 써볼까. 이런 마음으로 다시 한 모금 마셨다. ‘어머! 이게 뭔 일?! 맛있잖아!!!’ 너 정체가 뭐니? 처음 라벨을 봤을 때도, 이상하다 했다. 분명 화이트 와인인데, 품종이 Nerello Mascalese란다. 내 기억이 잘 못 된 줄 알았다. ‘저건 레든데… 아닌가? 레드 맞는데…?’ 그렇다. #네렐로마스칼레제 는 Etna 화산 지역 레드 품종이 맞다. 적포도로 화이트와인을 만든 것이지. 이제야 고개가 끄덕여진다. 무슨 연유로 화이트를 만들 생각을 했는지 아직 모르겠지만, 우짜둥 난 감사할 뿐. Far too much is talked about & focussed on this producers Hill Of Grace with a quest to compete with the iconic Penfolds Grange in price and marketing stature as Australia's icon wine. . It leaves the rest of what they do in its shadow - yet this wine my friends, has always been my number one from Henschke. . Australian winemakers have been among the world's best at blending varietals & Abbott's Prayer has always in my humble opinion been a leading example. . From the town of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills - known for its ideal climate & terroir for apple, cherry & pear orchards, this small parcel of cool climate Cabernet and Merlot vines (550 metres altitude), continually produces super quality cooler climate fruit than the lower altitude vineyards Henschke use. . A beautiful blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon & 24% Merlot fruit are fine examples of the quality & flexibility from this producer. . A wine, imo, is softer & mellow - very St Emilion (Bordeaux) style. . 2016 vintage in South Australia was a hot, dry season, with fruit concentrated & flavour packed - this wine represents the vintage so beautifully. . Colour is luscious purple black - bordello velvet. . Wine, when pouring clings to the @luigibormioli crystal like crazy.. almost as if to say.. Don't drink me just yet!! . Nebenbahnidylle auf der Mattigtalbahn😍 Die von Steindorf bei Straßwalchen nach Braunau am Inn führende Mattigtalbahn ist eine der wenigen Strecken der ÖBB, auf welchen die Signalisierung zum Teil noch mit Formsignalen erfolgt. Derzeit sind noch die Bahnhöfe Mauerkirchen, Mattighofen und Munderfing mit solchen manuell zu bedienenden Signalen ausgestattet. Aktuell gibt es bei der ÖBB sonst nur mehr auf der Hausruckbahn, der Kamptalbahn und der Inneren Aspangbahn Signale dieses Typs (bitte bessert mich aus, wenn dies nicht stimmt!).   Im Güterverkehr findet man auf der Mattigtalbahn mehrere Züge pro Tag, mit Loks des Typs Herkules (2016) bespannt. Hauptsächlich sind dies Nahgüterzüge, jedoch auch „internationalen“ Güterverkehr findet man hier.   Auf dem Bild ist einer dieser grenzüberschreitenden Güterzüge zu sehen, ein aus Kesselwagen bestehender Zug auf dem Weg von Salzburg nach Burghausen in Oberbayern. Bis Simbach am Inn wird der Zug von der 2016 072 bespannt, dort wird dann auf eine deutsche Diesellok gewechselt. Aufgenommen wurde dieses Bild am 16. Tasting of @penleyestate wines @vinum_winestore Penley, based in Coonawarra, AU, is a Villeroy&Boch in the wine scene, I would say. A daughter of the well-known winemaker Penfolds and a son of the distiller Tolley got married, and their children started Penley. (They are operated completely separate.) . What I found most interesting about this winery is that its key players are all women. In the wine scene, like many other industries, most of recognized figures are usually men. For example, in @decanter Sept issue, the number of identified people featured with images is 34. (Authors, editors, judges or those in ads were not counted.) And just 5 of them are women, just less than 15%. . Penley has two owners/directors and two winemakers, and they are all women. I haven’t seen many wineries whose leaders are so woman dominated. No wonder it celebrated the International Women's Day for a month, to share stories of women in the wine industry. . Among all the wines I tasted that evening, my favorite was surprisingly not one of its signature #cabernetsauvignon which Coonawarra is well known for. Rather, I was more impressed by #Genevieve #chardonnay #v2017. (SP: 3.8/5) Great to drink even now. Second favorite goes to #Steyning cab sauv #v2014, which Lauren Hansen, one of its winemakers who visited Seoul for the event, said is made old school. (SP: 3.8) Perhaps that’s why I found it more familiar and even comfortable to drink. Though all of its wines are, even by slightly, different from typical wines, she added. Its #helios #v2016 was also great, with structure and complexity. It’s not produced every year, because it’s only made of grade A grape wines, Lauren said. It can be aged at least 15-20 years, which means it’s too young to drink now. (SP: 3.7) I found #wildfermantshiraz #v2016 lighter than traditional shiraz. Lauren said they don’t add yeast during the fermentation process. She said the “project” was considered successful and they are now using the same non-yeast method for some of its other wines.
