This month McCalls 𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚𝙙 2 more 𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 from their back catalogue of retro styles... namely two 70𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 #M8257 + #M8258 So, being the #SewingNerd 🤓 that I am, I was curious to find out about the original versions of these 2 patterns 🕵🏼‍♀️ 🔍. And, thanks to Google Lens plus, the treasure trove that is the #VintagePatternWikia site (www.vintagepatterns.fandom.com) I found them 🙌🏼. What's great about the new versions is that unlike the limited sizing common in original 70s patterns (𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮) they are are of course now in the very familiar multi-size format 👍🏼. Here are some of my favorite projects from 2023 that didn’t get a post of their own! Front-loading with 3 favs, and then in rough chronological order: 1. The #vikisews_esther in a deadstock silk crepe from @stonemountainfabric and self-covered buttons. This was my first time using gelatin to stabilize silk, which worked well very well. I just washed it out when I was done. 2. The #fennelfannypack in an assortment of remnants and hand-me-downs and was a great travel companion 3. This @atelier_to_naniiro_textile #willowtank (cropped, with 3” taken in from the width at the hem, tapered t at the armscye). This was very special because I got it at the Nani Iro atelier in Osaka - a magical and beautiful place. 4. Started the year w a cropped #m8257 cardigan in deadstock wool from Stonemountain (also my first time using my snap-setter) 5. A color-blocked #m7574 in two colors of rib knit from @lyricalfabrics 6. The #M7944 bodice turned into a blouse for a thesis presentation (they made me pose like I was talking lol) with buttons that kind of pull so I just sewed them down and turned this into a pull-over ! Rayon crepe from @fabricmart 7. A #vikisews_oona in a deadstock cotton lawn from my local fabric store, @internationalsilks. I slightly overlapped the bodice pieces to raise the neckline by 1”. This dress deserves its own post with proper photos - eventually !! 8 and 9. A linen #ddfougere and nylon taslan #shoppant for summer fieldwork and adventures. Those pants kept my legs cool and covered as I walked the length of the LA River over 6 days! A bright red-orange linen Gilbert and a green linen neck tie for my Halloween costume that nobody guessed (a tomato plant) 2023 was a year of projects that are good for time spent outside in the heat, which was a big wardrobe gap for me. Now that I have an office job again, 2024’s focus will be on cohesive and interesting pieces that can be worn in air conditioning. I made a @daisyjonesandthesix inspired two-piece set 🪡🧵 I loved watching the new Prime series DJ&TS so much that I just can’t get the songs and the fashion out of my head. The show takes place in the 1970s, which is also my favorite decade 🌼🕺🏻🪩 When I saw this beautiful floral viscose from @Stoffenboetiek, I immediatly thought of making something that Daisy would have worn in the show. I really love these 70s tops, espacially when they have a dramatic sleeve as well. The pattern I used for the top was the #Mccalls8257, I think the cape sleeve is just magnificent 🤩 For the pants I used the #harlowpajamas pants. I just had just enough fabric for the top and the pants 😁✂️ What do you think of this outfit ? Love this @mccallpatterncompany Vintage 70s set from their Spring 22 release. Best part of the top is the overlay cape and of course I added a split to the skirt ☮️

🌱1970s sewing pattern + 1970s fabric = Groovy top This fabric was actually two pillowcases that my parents were given for a wedding present in 1977. They were hand-embroidered by my cousin Leigh-Anne’s grandmother on the other side of her family. The 1970s pattern is McCall’s M8257 that was reissued last year. I made View B, which includes sleeves, but I didn’t like the way the sleeves looked. It looked like I had a cloak draped over my shoulders. It definitely wasn’t giving the look I wanted. I decided to make straps instead. I can layer a long sleeve shirt under it or put a cardigan or jacket on top to make this wearable through cooler seasons. I also extended the length of the top by a few inches. I made the size according to my measurements, but it was much too wide. I had to take in a combined 4 inches at the sides. If I make this again, I’ll probably go down one or two sizes. Now I have to work up the courage to make the pants included in the pattern! Let me know if you’ve made them and having sizing input or tips. *The shirt is wrinkled in the closeup photo of the embroidery, because I took the picture after I wore it. So I made #m8257 and I was really confused by why no one seemed to be touching this pattern with a ten foot pole. Then I realized…it was the cape. People were a whittle scared of a whittle cape. Well…yeah the whole outfit looks weird by modern fashion proportions but if you pair it with 1940’s trousers…it looks pretty cool. Now…where do I wear this to?

Another matching set! This was a fun one. Swipe for the chaotic poses. I used #m8257 again but with some modifications. Instead of the cape style sleeves on the bodice, I added the sleeves from @hubbadingpatterns #juliadress I did a paper bag waist on the pants and also added pockets. Fabric is 100% linen. This month McCalls 𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚𝙙 2 more 𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 from their back catalogue of retro styles... namely two 70𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 #M8257 + #M8258 So, being the #SewingNerd 🤓 that I am, I was curious to find out about the original versions of these 2 patterns 🕵🏼‍♀️ 🔍. And, thanks to Google Lens plus, the treasure trove that is the #VintagePatternWikia site (www.vintagepatterns.fandom.com) I found them 🙌🏼. What's great about the new versions is that unlike the limited sizing common in original 70s patterns (𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮) they are are of course now in the very familiar multi-size format 👍🏼. Pull-over dresses and top with lower front gathered into front midriff and upper front gathered into band and front midriff have tie ends included in side seams.
