I 100% started & finished this dress specifically for the #grimgrinninggarb challenge hosted by @ladyrebeccafashions & @backroomfinds. I was so excited to participate, & I finished way before the deadline! But life finds a way to flub up the best laid plans, so I didn't get around to pics until Halloween or posting it here until now. While it's not haunted mansion fabric, I did have an affordable, spooky-themed drapey, dress weight rayon crepe from @fashion_fabrics_club in my stash, so I decided to whip up another McCall's #m8258 to wear for handing out candy on Halloween. Only I screwed it up in a decently big way & I didn't notice until I was hemming the dress. I somehow managed to sew (not cut, I did that part correctly), the center front skirt panel upside down on a partially directional print. I literally ignored notches in order to do so. It's not even a rectangle shape, I mean, I seriously sewed the wide end (sans notches) to the waistband, leaving the narrow end at the hem. If you look closely, the large skulls are all upside down, where the correct orientation has those being right-side up, & the waistband has more gathering than intended, leaving the hemline circumference shorter.  However, I couldn't be arsed to fix it at that point! As for the sewing itself, I cut a size down from my bust and waist measurements, making no fit modifications. I did add large patch-like pockets into the side panels because inseam pockets were not really feasible with no side seams (see pic for better visual explanation). Hemming is my least favorite part of any activity, so I'm putting it off again. #M8258 is looking good so far though. This is the first time I've seen a pattern suggest finishing armholes or hems with stretch lace. Did it with the armholes, but should I really repeat the process on the hem? #memademay2022 How is it the last day already?! To be honest I spent 98% of my day in my standard Tilly & the Buttons Freya top & a pair of RTW jeans. However, the best part of my day was trying on my new dress that I finished hemming late last night. Turns out I absolutely love it & it could actually be my favourite make ever. McCall’s have re-released their 1970s 8258 maxi dress. As soon as I saw it I knew I wanted to make it for the New Crafthouse’s upcoming Peace & Love party, & this is my wearable toile. I didn’t go full length because I didn’t have enough fabric, but this is a great length for everyday. For Me Made May 2022 - Day 2, I combined two recent makes. - The skirt is Simplicity 9479 ( #S9479 ). I absolutely love how this turned out - it’s versatile and comfortable. Fabric is Kona cotton fabric from Fabric.com. I made Size 14 at the waist, grading out to add an inch or so from the hips down. It was a good amount of work given that it features cutaway front pockets (so there were several pattern pieces to adjust), but worth it. I included lots of pictures showing this one front and back and its innards. - The top is McCall’s 8258 ( #M8258 ), View B. I added about an inch length to the front bodice panel of this sweet vintage reissue specimen. It’s designed to be tied in the back, but I prefer how it looks wrapped back around to tie in the front. The ties are long enough to accommodate this. I originally made this with sleeves, but I really wasn’t happy with the way they were laying, so out came my seam ripper and I finished the raw armhole edges with bias tape instead. My original intention was to make this as a wearable muslin as a means to work out fit issues, and then level up to make View C (the dress), but truth be told, I didn’t like how this ended up looking on me quite enough to bother with the dress. The top is fine, though - very wearable and a nice piece to wear a few times this Spring - and I don’t regret making it. I have a glam dress lined up for Day 3! It’s an older make that was way too big due to recent weight loss, but I tailored it to make it brand new. I love a bit of 70s style and McCalls 8258, an authentic 70s reprint, has it in spades. I like the big bell sleeves and the high waist tied in at the back particularly. This fabric, which was gifted to me by Minerva as part of the Brand Ambassador scheme complements the pattern beautifully with its boho floral design and funky green and purple colour scheme. It is pure cotton (I’m not keen on 70s style synthetics!) and pleasantly cool and light in the current heatwave. I was gifted 5m of the fabric, which is the amount stated on the pattern. However, I didn’t use a contrast fabric and I added an inch to the length so I found I needed a bit more and had to buy an extra half metre. Usually I find that big brand patterns allow me to lengthen and adapt the pattern within the specified amount, but not this time. That said, this fabric at £5.99 a metre before discount is very reasonably priced so I didn’t mind too much. I love this pattern and have already started to make the top version in some blue Liberty Tana Lawn and have some denim chambray earmarked to make the midi version, to which I will add a ruffle hem. My latest @minervadotcom make! I am a total sucker for vibrant animal print, and this one is so pretty! This is a challis from their exclusive range, and it's perfect for a maxi dress! I used the @mccallpatterncompany vintage reproduction pattern #m8258. The pattern was a little more fiddly than other vintage patterns, but still pretty straightforward and easy to sew. I absolutely am in love with the finished dress! I want to wear it everywhere. When I make it again, I think I will go down one size. #mccalls8258, IMO the cover is not the greatest 😬 and didn’t love it until I saw a girl’s make in the McCalls & simplicity group on FB (don’t join, it’s addictive, lol). This fabric, which was gifted to me by Minerva as part of the Brand Ambassador scheme complements the pattern beautifully with its boho floral design and funky green and purple colour scheme. It is pure cotton (I’m not keen on 70s style synthetics!) and pleasantly cool and light in the current heatwave. I was gifted 5m of the fabric, which is the amount stated on the pattern. However, I didn’t use a contrast fabric and I added an inch to the length so I found I needed a bit more and had to buy an extra half metre. Usually I find that big brand patterns allow me to lengthen and adapt the pattern within the specified amount, but not this time. That said, this fabric at £5.99 a metre before discount is very reasonably priced so I didn’t mind too much. I love this pattern and have already started to make the top version in some blue Liberty Tana Lawn and have some denim chambray earmarked to make the midi version, to which I will add a ruffle hem. This month McCalls 𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙚𝙙 2 more 𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 from their back catalogue of retro styles... namely two 70𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙨 #M8257 + #M8258 So, being the #SewingNerd 🤓 that I am, I was curious to find out about the original versions of these 2 patterns 🕵🏼‍♀️ 🔍. And, thanks to Google Lens plus, the treasure trove that is the #VintagePatternWikia site (www.vintagepatterns.fandom.com) I found them 🙌🏼. What's great about the new versions is that unlike the limited sizing common in original 70s patterns (𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮) they are are of course now in the very familiar multi-size format 👍🏼.
