Two looks for day 3 of #memademay! Slide 1 (day time): my satin flippy skirt. I love this print but I do find this a little bit hard to style. I forgot to interface the waistband and I need to go back and do that but this is my most successful “silky” sew to date. #M8068 also featuring my dog Bongo being just so cute Slide 2(evening): tonight my beautiful step-mom @eveeriss0411 took me out for sushi to kick off my birthday weekend 💕 obviously it called for a special outfit. This post is about family, and love, and zippers. Let's start with the zipper. I've always been intimidated by the more complicated parts of sewing. I finally learned to install a zipper this summer! My latest project, a brown corduroy skirt, needed a 7 inch zipper. I didn't have one, but I remembered seeing one with my mom's old sewing things. Now, the love. My mom had a deep love of creating, especially through sewing. She made so many things for our home from stenciled walls to the comforter on my crib. Sadly, her life was cut short by breast cancer when she was only 37. She never got the chance to sew very much for me, or my sister, or her future grandchildren, but I know she would have. It's bittersweet - we're connected by mutual creativity, but we also missed out on so much together. And finally, family. My dad passed down my mom's sewing materials to me, including two sewing machines and baskets of odds and ends. When I searched through my mom's old sewing basket, I found the perfect zipper: 7 inches, the right shade of brown, and sturdier than any modern plastic one. It felt like a small gift from her. I wondered what project she had planned for it, or if she just picked it up because 15 cents was too good to pass up. While my grandma and mom are gone, I feel bound to them, and even possibly generations before them, through this creative hobby and all the stuff that comes with it - old buttons, machines, scraps of trim. One day, I hope my daughters will use my sewing machine or repurpose fabric I've chosen, carrying these small pieces of our family's history forward. So, I guess my message is this: create something. Share a craft with someone you love, or honor someone you've lost by working with what they've left behind. The most meaningful projects are woven with love, history, family, and maybe a little zipper from the 70s. A little two piece set for summer! I’ve never really gone for a co-ord before, but I loved this Japanese crinkle cotton so much that I figured I’d make a skirt and top so that i could maximise the amount of things I could wear it with. I chose two really simple patterns, and I do wonder if I should have gone for something a bit more exciting, especially for the skirt. But both pieces will be really easy to wear, the top is cute with jeans or shorts and I’m looking forward to wearing the skirt with boots and a turtleneck in the cooler months too. I’m glad I’ll get to wear the set together before then though!
